Ғылым және технология

This is a part 2 of Renovation Tips. Both parts 1 & 2 are sequels to 'Colchester Student Mk 1 Lathe - refurbishment' but in more detail and with more technical content. It also invites feedback from anyone who has undertaken a similar project. Topics in this video include: Lubrication of the headstock, fitting, cleaning up of L0 female tapers, positioning machine.

Hello and thankyou for such a clear and very listenable video. I have to say that your delivery and manner is truly refreshing and I look forward to all your future postings. I have just become the proud owner of a MK1 although there are two distinct differences that are obvious from the out set, I think due to the age. I think mine is an earlier version and I am in the process of researching this via Tony Griffiths. I have a single feed engagement lever which serves both apron and cross slide however to select the one you require you slide the lever along the base of the apron to one of two large slots, one for the carriage and one for the cross slide. It works well and is very positive, however, since watching your videos and listening to your excellent explanation of the workings af the above, I now have the confidence to strip and clean mine, as much as anything to learn and become more familiar with it. The other difference that I picked up on was the postion of the levelling points. I have the two under the headstock end like yours but at the other end mine appears to be under the centre line at the direct opposite end not the back side as it is on yours. I do intend making some levelling feet for mine and I will attempt to level using a combination of engineers level and clocking a bar similar to yourself. Was wondering if you had tried an engineers level on your bedways at all. I was also very pleased to see you have gone down the VFD route. the one you have is Identical to mine. I already have one on a 3hp two stage compressor and it works brilliantly but I was wondering if you have had any issues with loss of power. My lathe came with a quite modern 3hp/3phase dual power motor which lends itself perfectly to a VFD but I have not yet tried any heavy work with it, all my research suggest there is a certain drop in power/torque.The mounting of your VFD is very interesting and a great idea however I am wall mountng mine, for two reasons, firstly I think you are a very clean worker unlike myself. In a very short time my key pad would be obliterated with oily finger marks, also as a nod of respect to Colchester and its history I am going to attempt to repurpose the existing switchs and levers for the start/stop/reverse using the low voltage control blocks on the VFD with the incorporation of a 10K pot for the speed control. I note and understand your point about the oiling system of the mind numbingly expensive Gamet head bearngs and I will be very aware of this when I am using it. Anyway thats enough rambling from me for now thank you again and good look. I look forward to anything else Colchester related that you post. Best regards Phil

Thank you Phil for your positive response and helpful comments. I don't have an engineers level but intend to get one while we are back in the UK. As you suggested I intend to experiment with using the level and DTI after we return. I haven't experienced problems with the VFD power supply, but suspect I don't have the tool inserts which would test that to the limit. I will look out for that. I considered mounting the VFD below but didn't want to disturb the cabinet too much. I agree that in the long run mine really is going to need switching and a pot.

I had to smile when I saw the Matrix plate for the clutches on the back. That is where I served my time! 😊 Will have to look on the back of my Master to see if there's one there!

Perhaps you may know how to ensure proper disengagement. It is adjusted according to spec, but is often slow to disengage. All is clean. Could it be wear on splines? Thanks.

@@Workshopfriend I'm afraid I couldn't say myself with any certainty, I only machined the parts or checked the parts to drawing spec 😉 however...yes I do believe that issues with the splines will cause drag as you describe, I'm not sure if thays the only issue you may encounter though, but I will however pop of an email to a gentleman I know from the design office to ask 😊

Appropriate amount of drag - on spindle bearings - - - About a year ago I pointed out to doubleboost that his bearings seems a little slack - hand spinning the chuck, it went on for ever ! I checked mine - and devised a test and it passed that test - so here's my crazy test ! With the 3-jaw chuck mounted, drive and power feed disengaged, there should be enough load on the spindle bearings to prevent the 3-jaw chuck from rotating with the chuck key sticking straight out horizontally - BUT should the chuck start to be rotated, the chuck key weight should cause the chuck to accelerate at first ! (uses standard 3-jaw chuck!) How's about that for a friction test !

Will have to try that when I get back. It would be handy to have a 'calibrated' test like this. I will compare and let you know.
