I don't think people who're not familiar with desi music can understand that most of our ancient love poetry has an element of the poet complaining about his/her beloved's lack of reciprocity. It's a recurring theme in Urdu and other regional poetry of the subcontinent. Some is more lighthearted banter. Others are more serious complaints. This is actually a qawwali but it's very different from a traditional qawwali. Qawwalis traditionally tend to be about the divine. They are inherently Islamic in nature. However, here they've made a love qawwali of sorts for the first time. Thagyan does mean trickery. However, the word can be used in both the contexts I mentioned above. Thag is a thief who steals with tricks. Here the lover (voiced by Zain and Zohaib) is saying the term in the way we say 'you stole my heart away.' It's basically a conversation between the lover and his beloved and they're engaging in the banter that is very intrinsically part of subcontinental love stories.

This. This is the comment they need to read. To add to this: While "thagyan" literally translates to trickery, con, and deceit, that's not what this song represents. It's a lot more playful and flirtatious in nature, and it's a recurring theme in our music. It's the same issue as Mehram. You literally cannot translate the word 'Mehram' -- which is so vital to the essence of that song. Take that word away, and the song just doesn't have the same effect.

I think the reason people of other languages don't felt same feeling like us desi people who speak the language the reason is subtitles never give justice to the real lyrics and it's emotions ...in previous season they do so much effort on lyrics as well but this time lyrics they put in subtitles is not justifying the song I think this is the biggest reason by the way we can't blame them because this time they put so much efforts in other things as well so it's ok it's not possible everytime that you do everything perfect sometimes things get off but I salute to them for this whole season they put everything in this season what they have and they deserve all the awards for that ❤❤❤❤❤

This was the best song of the season - at a similar level to Tu Jhoom. Zoheb was giving vibes of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan who was THE legend. This is qawwali which is a form of sufi devotional singing from hundreds of years ago

This one was a mix of two things: Qawwali and Jugulbandi. Qawwali is an entire genre and one that's certainly an acquired taste (something I haven't fully developed either!). The soundscape of Qawwali can be quite harsh but has melodic reliefs interspersed every now and then. Its also a sound quite specific to Pakistan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan being the pioneers in the area. Jugulbandi is a situational dialogue between two parties, usually a playful one. So it was a fun mix of the two. Its meant to be very different sound-wise by its inherent nature.

What's key to understanding the lyrics is to pick up on the playfulness behind them.

  • @ahmedmunir1988

Hey guys! This is Qawwali which is mixed in a non traditional way. This is more old coke studio style. Qawwali is about vocal prowess and this track didn’t disappoint. And you guys were talking about what the main guy was saying in the end. That is play of vocals and these are musical notes/sounds with no words. This is actually a pretty great song. The main guy is Zohaib Ali and next to him is his brother Zain Ali. And QB is great. It’s actually more playful. Jodi is right! It’s lost in translation. The lyrics are more playful way of talking about it. They are not apart. The word thagyan is roughly translated to naughty. Trickery is more negative. So they are saying that your playfulness got me hooked to you but you are still elusive. That is the gist. But here is the catch! Qawwali is more a genre where you communicate with the divine. And you can pick it up in set. Jodi got that right as well! The lanterns are one of Platonic solid which according to symbolism that shape points to how God arranged stars. And you see the set with arches. They also point towards divinity and how hands join in prayer. So yeah this is one of those songs that you have to have a more connection to subcontinent to understand. But great work guys! Love your videos!

fun fact, you'll notice that qawwali (the style in which zain and zohaib are singing) has alot of repetitive lines, but each line is sung differently. and that folks, is the beauty of qawwali.

Older seasons had this crazy fusion of western style music x traditional style of music. 'Paar Chanaa De' is my abs fav from Season 9 - my all time fav season, if you guys review season 9 I'm gonna actually scream 👉🏼👈🏼 Paar Chanaa De features something unique : a Pakistani plucked string instrument played by the mother of the two male singers in the video. Hi guys.So one thing I am developing is to give some of these songs a bit of a time to grow on you. Muazzaz Saarif, Beparwah and peechay hutt are a prime example. As I kept listening and got familiar with the songs they did grow on me. Thagiyan is back to our roots desi music and I fell in love with it immediately, as I had been wanting a change in flavor after too much modern influence and fusions. It is such a palate cleanser for me. Zain and Zohaib's voices are rich and raw like the soil of my homeland and transfer me to the fertile plains of Punjab. My two cents', this was music to my ears...(pardon the pun..lol).

This song was a little mellow, won't call it meh but this one didn't have that energy, and it is supposed to be that way. The lead guys are qawwals (style of sufi singing), and the female singer is Qurratulain Baloch, a diva in her own right. As always honest reviews are always better and welcome, and you guys never disappoint. 👍

Quratulain Baloch also known as QB . She is one the most powerful , most amazing , most popular and one The Best Singer of Pakistan . She idealises Abida Parveen and she is also seen by some as a younger version of Abida Parveen . I would eagerly urge and request you to react to her song " Humsafar " with lyrics . It is her masterpiece which was originally sung by Abida Parveen & by which QB got so much popular in Pakisatan and internationally as well . Humsafar is a sad song by the way so you might get a culture shock there but I would request you to react to it and see how much big vocals she have . Btw she lives in Pakistan and USA .

Welcome to the genre of Qawali, t basically the most traditional genre music of the region and just is unmatched still in this modern techno era...the laid back sort of feel may seem flat t first timers but once u get into itt and dont expect much and listen to it then it will be all u would want to hear, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was the master of this genre and for us there was and isnt any better singer period he is the uncle and teacher of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan from Afreen Afreen. Listen to him if u ever get around..but we understand it is a totally new genre for u guys but trust me there isnt a better one, this coming from a guy who grey up listening to a lot of western music. BTW Quratulain has one of the most beautiful voice and is just a gem.

  • @aqibkhan2729
    @aqibkhan27292 жыл бұрын

0:34 you would pronounce thagyan like thug-yaa (with a nasal n at the end)...the word would literally mean "thuggeries" but since its used in a playful sense in the song's context the translator/s went with "trickery". anyway, i get why the song wouldn't appeal all that much to people unfamiliar with the qawali format. for me, the most impressive thing about the song is the fusion...qawali often ends up sounding awkward when fused with modern elements but they did a fantastic job here imo.

yup ! got quite offended when they said the song fell flat but for us, it’s a whole new aura. qawwali’s are so soulful and that’s what i thought about this song too. and with QB on a track, it’s an instant hit. but again, i respect their opinion and guess they don’t have a knack for a more classical, traditional sufism which is completely ok :)

This is qawwali and it's a genre which has been played since mughal era of subcontinent. You need to understand more about this genre and the concept of these videos. Read about sufi music, the message, the connections and what they're singing. It's not like western music this is a short song qawwalis are usually very big where you sit and listen and the poetry doesn't mean exactly the translation it's totally different.

Maybe because I'm not a native Punjabi speaker and the overuse of a language I don't understand this season is putting me off, but I wasn't the biggest fan of this song. But strangely, I want to like it and know that I'm going to listen to it just based on the catchy beat. I don't know, maybe it was the one guys ultra-raspy voice, or the muted (and, like Nick said, a bit dark) set design, but I wasn't fawning over it like the other commenters are. I, too, felt like this fell flat (I just can't place what on). I still like it more than Sajan Das Na and Neeray Neeray Vas.

Song was a let down personally as QB doesn’t put new musics to frequent and was hoping more of her own song then this collab.

You are right . The song was a little flat. Being a pakistani , even I couldn't relate to the song. Notjing wrong with the lyrics but the music was not hitting my head . Although I am fan of desi music. And love desi music instead of funky songs. This song was really good but I may not listen to it again .

This is the worst review made by any youtuber so far ... This Song is heavenly !!!! I don't think a review on this genre of music can easily done by some individual or group without getting some serious training on the same specially some westerners who absolutely do not have any clue or exposure to indo-pak subcontinental musical practices let alone Qawali .... you have to think and live in a different spectrum to get that ethereal feeling the songs delivers ....

Fair enough. Appreciate your comment. But we never claimed to be music reviewers. We are reacting to the song and giving our opinion of how we felt about it. People may not like what we say but we just give our honest opinions.
