CoinWeek: We Take the PCGS Grading Challenge! - 4K Video

At the 2016 American Numismatic Association's World's Fair of Money in Anaheim, California, CoinWeek editor Charles Morgan met with CoinFacts founder and former PCGS President Ron Guth to take the PCGS Grading Challenge.
Ron gave Charles 30 minutes to review 20 classic and modern U.S. coins and render an opinion.
From scarce date Seated Liberty quarters to Proof Jefferson nickels and everything in between, the PCGS Grading Challenge will put any numismatist's knowledge of coin grading to the test.
In this video, you will follow along with Charles as takes on each of the test's 20 coins. Our macro lens captures each coin in beautiful detail.
Follow along with Charles or compete against him by making a tally of your own grades.
After Charles is done, Ron Guth goes over each coin and provides viewers with the grades that PCGS' world class graders gave.
Agree or disagree, this video is great fun and you will learn something about how to grade coins.

They did a test where they sent the same coin to every major grading company and the results were between AU-58 to MS-64 if that tells you anything.

Well done! We did a grading challenge at our club meeting. We put a timer on to simulate how long a TPG looks at a coin. After time is up you hand the coin on and grade the next one. Folks had fun and it got many interested in learning more about grading.

The biggest take away from this video is how much subjectivity there is in grading. On almost all the coins that the grade differed, they were both able to justify their grade and I see no problem with either of their grades.

You called it a “ 65 red, we call it a 66 red (Indianhead 1902 Penny), minor difference. The coin is worth over twice as much money in 66. It makes you think that a lot of this is just smoke and mirrors

good video. i took the test and was 14 for 20 , not off by much but i believe lighting does factor, not to mention lousey video. I also saw marks that lead me to believe some cleaning of those coins might have occured. I have no experience with gold coins so i am really not upset with my results. More videos like these would be great for your average collector. Thanks

(*For me, I think your camera was good enough to make me judge/grade all the coins lower than you did.) I'd like to see a video on the garbage wtc coins, vs the real collectors coins (*Flag Waving Backed PCGS Slabs w/ *usually Gem Uncirc/MS 69/MS69 1/14440 /or> MS69 Barcoded Population Coin Specific #'d Silver Eagles) (All the eagles, seem to be going for between 100$ and as high as 900$ with a median of 200 / 350 $) What are your thoughts?

There is no correct grade as grading any coin is subjective. As long as you can back up the grade with your reasoning

  • @everettwhite9874

    @everettwhite9874

Leo Chang Hmm. I agree grading coins is subjective, unless, however, the senior grader overrides your subjective opinion. Three different graders look at coin submissions, if the first two graders have different scores a third coin grader reviews the coin. I think that process was shown in a PCGS coin grading video.

I think PCGS market-grades Trade Dollars too much. They're only calling that one a 64 because the average Trade Dollar is so baggy. I ended up buying an NGC MS62 for that reason. I'll bet if I sent it to PCGS I'd easily get a 63.

The ancient money has historical value and the evidence of human culture is in addition to the nominal value and the value of liquidity at that time. But ancient money has a sale value or auction for collectors of ancient currencies of gbog, kepeng, Dinar and Dirham all have advantages for a country when using a gold coin or gold, silver and seloko, because the money-it proves to have a long shelf, the exchange rate between countries or nations is not mutually harmful, the nominal value remains stable not ups and downs so good for the country's economy as a reliable means of exchange and if burned the value of metal is still salable this is the perception of tiredness in antiquity.Compared Paper money easily damaged if burned out there is no residual to restore assets or modal.masing each there kelbihan and deficiencies, heavy coins and the amount many need large conveyance, simple and easy paper money

you could use darts on the coins above ms 63 and be correct----the challange is in the vf to au of course the money is not here---there has to a reasoning why a coin is ms 65 and not ms66 and and be articulated as to why. we as the c0nsumer are constantly ripped of by not having real evidence as to grade---it is only ---because i say so----facial recognition has to come in here and fix all this....
