    It's not practical. You're heating water, that takes a ton of energy. You're getting very little back. That tiny flame would not be enough to heat the approx. 20 gallons of water in the bottom of that barrel. If you instead used a wood fire or coal, etc. it would just make more sense to use that heat energy rather than from the methane produced. If this were large scale like a brewery vat with a wood fire underneath I could see it being viable.

    If my calculations arent totally off You're making somewhere around 150 litres of methane a day. Around 100 grams, at .6 grams per litre. 5.5 MJ per day, which is 1.5 Kw... So your heater is using the entire energy production of the reactor. Edited because I screwed up the calculation.

    Cody, this methane generator is absolutely genious. I love that you're doing it in your home, it makes it seem like such a viable project for myself too. I love the efficiency of it all, the waste products going to your garden to help create crops which you will eat, and the scraps will once again eventually return to the digestor. All the while you're producing enough gas that a constant flame can be run. It would be interesting to see how much energy and useful fertilizing material could be produced on a much larger scale. Keep it up, your channel is something real in a sea of blind thought

    Add some anti foaming agent (even the kind used in spas will work). That will give you some use out of the foam. It will re suspend and get further broken down. Add another tank for stage two. it will give you more gas and separate your outputs, distill them if you will, into the separate tanks. Then you can collect methane, phosphates, and alcohols from one tank while getting ammonia gas, acetone, and nitrogen from the other.

    If you have one or can make one easily, why not make a bunsen burner sort of thing? The lantern mantle is wasting energy in what is almost pure conversion of gas to heat AFAIK by instead converting heat to light. Additionally, you could make it failsafe by putting a bit of platinum wire in the gas stream. If the flame ever went out, the gas would be catalyzed by the platinum wire, and would reignite.

    Liquid oxygen and liquid methane might produce a hyperbolic reaction. Where as just as soon as the 2 mix you get a reaction. An example would be the rocket engine used in the Saturn V rocket. It used liquid kerosene and liquid oxygen. Just as soon as they mixed, it produced a severe hypergolic reaction. That created a lot of force.

  • @knicknacks

    @knicknacks

    @@CSX4772 The Saturn v engines were not hypergolic. AFAIK liquid oxygen is not hypergolic with any fuel. A good example of a hypergolic engine would be the ones on the Russian proton rocket. It uses dinitrogen tetroxide and unsymmetric monomethyl hydazine.

It's called "The Handbook Of Homemade Power" It talks about using some of the gas to heat the mass to maintain temp... and still get better gas production (assuming you have enough material to fuel faster production) 2 temp zones I remember 90 F and 120 -130 F the higher being high production. Love it! Keep up the good work!

    Yeah, it definitely indicates the presence of sulfides. Pure methane is odorless. I think the misconception might come from the fact that if you buy methane (or "natural gas") in a tube it's usually laced with an odorant so that you'll notice if it's leaking.
