Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Don't waste time installing the wrong handrail, placing it in the wrong spot, or missing any number of the other requirements. Believe it or not, there are actually some pretty specific requirements to installing handrail (and some reasoning behind them).

In Canada, the code says 3 or more risers need a rail for INTERIOR residential stairs, or for exterior, 4 or more risers need it. And that is ONLY for residential / "single dwelling unit". All other stairs, commercial, public, industrial etc, then ALL stairs require a railing, regardless how many risers there are.

Thats interesting! In commercial here all stairs require handrail on both sides. Residential is only one side

Is this same for ADA reqs for business bathrooms? (Believe rail needs to be 16” for rail behind toilet and 32” rail beside toilet) could be wrong.

Grab rail around a toilet should be between 33 and 36” measured from the floor to the top of the rail. (At least per the code requirements where I am at). The vertical grab rail should be roughly 39” from the back wall and 39” from the floor to the first part of the rail. Hope that helps!

How about the height guardrail and hand rail of the deck

Should be the same requirements. Guardrail is required when there is a fall of 30" or more and handrail is required when there are 4 or more risers, per the IRC. Anytime those conditions exist whether its a deck or interior stair case or some other situation guardrail and/or handrail would be required. Hope that helps!!

I have a flight of stairs with 3 steps and then a 4th “step” which is a landing that turns the stairs 90degrees and continues up. You’re saying I only need handrail for the stairs past the landing?

Hello, Think of it in terms of risers not steps. If you have 4 or more risers a handrail is required per the International Residential Code. Less than 4 and you can omit the handrail if you want. Hope that helps!

Ben, quick question do I need continuous hand rail for my landing area or bend in L shaped stairs? I would send pictures but not seeing how to attach it

Hey Lou, For residential applications a handrail does NOT need to continue through a landing. The landing must be at least 3 feet deep and as wide as the stairs. If there is no landing then you would need to carry the handrail around the corner with no breaks making it continuous. Hope that helps!

@@RJG772 Here is the link to the NJ uniform construction code, you can download the code in its entirety. www.nj.gov/dca/divisions/codes/codreg/ucc.html Though I did search handrail and guardrail throughout the document and it kicks you back to the IRC and IBC. Hope that helps

Thanks for the information. I needed a lot of this. Is the code the same for exterior deck stairs? The standard 2x6 or 2x4 top side rail won't work? I just have not seen many smaller hand rails on new decks..

@@howarddover2442 At least per the International Residential Code all stairs have the same handrail requirements. Handrail has to be grip-able and the 2x4/2x6 top rail is not considered grip-able. In my area we are pretty strict on it. Other areas may not be. I know there is grooved cedar 2x6 that can be attached vertically and meet the requirement (if you can find it and like the looks of it).
