Amazing footage, it’s so hard to believe they were still fishing this way right up to the 1970s. I’ve met many Portuguese fishermen in ports throughout North America, they are without a doubt some of my favorite people on this planet. Kind, fun, hardworking, and very skilled at what they do, but despite that they are also very humble and generous. God bless them.

Portuguese fisherman so brave, so hardworking

In November and December we were on the Grand Banks when we saw these vessels. The men were very brave to go out in a skiff and fish for cod every day. The fish were dried on the rigging of the mother ship. The Grand Banks were a notorious foggy place to be.

I love this video. Deep sea fishermen are real heroes. In fact any sailor is a hero for me . I get seasick just getting into a bath. I don´t know why because my father was a sailor.

What an awesome video. In the last couple minutes of the video, can be seen the harbour and the docks of St. John's. When I was a child living in St. John's in 1968 and 1969, I recall vividly going down to the St. John's waterfront man times and admiring all the many White Fleet cod ships from Portugal that had come ashore...probably to be in safe harbour to avoid a huge upcoming storm out on the Grand Banks, maybe to refill with food and water and salt and fuel supplies to head back out to fish again for another month. Or maybe to stock up with enough supplies to carry them through to get back to Portugal at the end of the fishing season. I can still them see those ships in my mind, lining the docks and sometimes 2 ships were tied together broadside. There were so many. I recall on another occasion of the friendly crew letting the person with me & myself to go on board for a little tour of their particular ship. I also recall another time I went down to look at the ships and apparently a small fire had taken place on one of them out at sea, but not enough damage that the ship was unable to make it back to shore. By the time I got to the docks, the crew had already shovelled from the interior of the ship the ashes of the burnt items. A huge pile. I clearly remember the smell of that still smoldering ash pile to this day. I even remember the many cracked and broken (liquor) bottles mixed amongst that burnt rubble. The smell still lingers with me. (Maybe the fire had taken place in the kitchen area where the fishermen had been killing time by playing cards and smoking cigarettes and having a few drinks. I dunno the exact cause of that fire) Memories of the White Fleet from Portugal last a lifetime for this Newfoundlander.

20 or 30 years ago the fishing fleets in Gloucester MA were still strong. The Portuguese fleet had the hardest working crews of all. The 1927 Essex built 84 foot schooner Olivia Brown proved that by having a reputation as the high-line boat, Captain Frank Brown, her skipper, had the Olivia Brown rigged as either a dragger or as a swordfisher. During a 1940 hurricane he thought it as his final trip. He knelt on deck praying as crew watch from the pilot house. Justly, all hands were safe.

ouço dizer que quem fosse para a pesca do bacalhau ficava livre da tropa. não sei se é verdade mas sei que morriam lá muitos mesmo. imagino a afliçaõ desses homens quando se perdiam no nevoeiro. só Deus para os salvar ou então levar...

Sou neto de um pescador de bacalhau e com grande orgulho. Penso que na Fuzeta todos temos familiares directos ou não nestes grandes homens que arriscavam a sua vida nesta pesca pelas suas familias. Dizem que os melhores pescadores de bacalhau do mundo eram da Fuzeta! É claro sem menosprezar os outros pescadores, que certamente eram boa gente e muito valente. Nos fins dos anos 20 saia da Fuzeta um bacalhoeiro com destino à Terra Nova, e à vela.

e verdade sim,embora esa situação nao abrangesse so a Marinha de Pesca,incluindo claro a pesca do bacalhau. Ha um decreto lei,(que posso procurar)que todos que estivessem ao serviço das nossas Marinhas ,ou seja embarcados(mercantes ,pesca)estavam dispensados do serviço militar efectivo completo. Faziam entao 18 meses de Reserva Maritima, se bem me lembro havia uma prorrogaçao especial para o bacalhau desde que (penso que teriam de fazer cinco viagens). Se ajuda sirvam-se

5 viagens, não, eram 7 viagens se todo o pescador, pescasse bacalhaus, se não pescasse na primeira viagem, era dispensado, ía servir as forças armadas.

sim é verdade... meu falecido pai para nao ir á tropa enverdou pela pesca do bacalhau. começou com 16 anos, iniciando ele a sua vida laboral na pesca á linha nos doris... muitos companheiros perdeu, muitos companheiros fez...

Não foii esta forma de pescar (com anzol), a causadora da destruiçao dos grandes cardumes de bacalhau que existiam antes do arraste pela popa

#2 20 ou 30 anos atrás, as frotas de pesca em Gloucester MA ainda eram fortes . A frota de Português tinha mais difíceis equipes de trabalho de todos. O 1927 Essex construído 84' escuna Olivia Brown provou que por ter uma reputação como o barco de alta -line (high-liner).

#2 Capitão Frank Brown , seu capitão, tinha a Olivia Brown armou tanto como um dragger ou como um swordfisher . Durante um 1940 de furacões pensou como sua viagem final. Ajoelhou-se no convés orando como relógio equipe da casa piloto. Justiça, todas as mãos eram seguras .
