Coconut Palm Tree Tutorial - Model Scenery
Sometimes the fastest way of making stunning scenery isn’t always the cheapest or easiest, but with the right tools it’s amazing what you can make.
The coconut palm trees I make in this video are made with the assistance of the Brother Scan N Cut die cutting machine, an absolute must when it comes to creating these fantastic looking palm leaves. The whole process is very easy and once you put a bunch of these palms together in your scene they will surely grab the attention of any onlookers.
If you enjoy watching the videos and would like to help support my channel and help keep it going for many years to come please check out my patreon page. I have some small rewards for people who help keep this channel going :)

I personally don't even build models but it makes me so happy everytime you upload!
This and your apple tree and corrugated sheets/garage are one of the most cumbersome projects to make. Incredible, the patience and the detail!!
What a great tutorial and I totally agree about the Scan n Cut. I’ve had mine for years and, as a miniaturist, I find it indispensable. I often just rubber stamp a design or find free images on the internet and print them and direct cut. Being able to resize, print multiples, etc is awesome. The Scan n Cut always does an incredible job and I think is an unsung hero. I have had a Cricut and think the Scan n Cut runs rings around it plus you aren’t limited to their designs.
Luke, you produced an excellent tutorial! Your techniques infuse an incredible degree of realism into your miniature palm trees.
Just the best tutorial ever!!! Thanks for teach and share!
Great as always. Something I don't understand is why it's so hard to find scale human figures of comparable realism to the other models like cars, furnishings, etc. They always stick out like toys. Is that a style thing?

I was wondering the same question :) because he's making detail at is finest but when we see humans they look like toys
@AericLee23

Human beings have a greater amount of detail than weathering on buildings or scars on trees. Even the shrubs and bushes in these sorts of models aren't very realistic, actually. It's harder to make tiny plastic figures of humans. But I hope that as technology gets better, there will be more realistic-looking human figures as well.
Another great tutorial, Luke. You have incredible patience and skill.
Seu trabalho é muito incrível!!! Parabéns
Your attention to detail is very impressive, as always. Very well done.
Very realistic and they look fantastic can't wait for more.
So relaxing to watch. Everything is going to be fine when people still have time in the world to make models like these. I don't make them, but as someone who is a Potter/Ceramics artist I really appreciate the dedication.
I am so happy you utilized Illustrator and a cutter to aid you in making a realistic palm tree. Excellent work as always.
mate that is incredible the realism and patience i absolutely love your work luke

Luke, Let me just say that your videos are such an inspiration to me. You've given me so many great idea and knowledge on how to improve my model and diorama making. Thank you SO MUCH for these tips, tricks and tutorials :) Please don't stop making these videos any time soon. I love watching your meticulous attention to detail. 10/10 good Sir.
Your videos are so great! You go into so much detail when making various objects and scenery, I simply adore it! You have inspired me to make my own dioramas, the cheap way though. When I get more money I will probably do it "proper".
When you started bending the finished tree, I was like "Brilliant". Added mechanism that makes it more realistic.
Awesome as usual Luke! Just finished my first diorama using your Realistic Scenery tutorial as a guide.
Wow, you go through all that to make one tree, but it is one realistic looking tree. Especially with the bendable trunk. Hats off to you for putting in the effort, it certainly pays off.

Luke, thanks a lot for your great tutorials. Like you I do some models in the same scale (1:87) and seeing this video you convinced me to buy a ScanNcut to improve some precise cuts. I find inspiration on your achievements, thanks for that ! Clément
Luke you are genius mate thanks heaps for sharing your amazing work. keep it up 👍👏
Patience master level :)
Amazing talented guy! Don’t stop, please! 🇧🇷 Congrats from Brazil!

Just make sure to paint them green and bunch up and "comb" the strains while the paint dries.
I have vague plans to make a tropical railway layout someday so I find your palm tree videos inspirational... But daunting!
Great tutorial! Now all you need is an islander scampering up the tree to cut a few coconuts. Thanks. Cheers, Dan
Wow, Luke they look fantastic, as you said very time consuming but very worthwhile when you see the results. Excellent video as always, well done!
Stunning!
Your videos have been stealing my time since the moment I came across your channel. The detailing is amazing. I would also like to see you do some mountainous sceneries, maybe by the creek spring, with more vibrant colours, but I'm happy with whatever I can get. :)
INCREDIBLE
Thank you so much for a lthe great content Luke. It's also nice to see a video that isn't just Australian bushland or heritage in nature.

i am so glad i found this chanel!
You are an AMAZING modeler who puts forth an effort everyone should applaud. Kudos!
You should make some yellowish greenish leaves at the bottom like almost dead leaves! Some brown coconuts and some detailing on the trunks like you did with the last ones! Good video as always!

Holy shit. This stuff is incredible!
Excellent, absolutely perfect.
Wow! The effect is awesome. I was a little bit sad when I realised i'd need a cutting machine, but i found a large print shop online that has one :) Will soon order the leaves! Only a few days ago I thought "man i wishe Luke Towan made a palm tree tutorial" since i needed some for my diorama. LOL
man you have some pretty bad ass skills!
Made some of these and they look great. I also made some others with some variation to them and also made other palm tree styles. They look great and very realistic. Thanks your a awesome teacher.

really enjoyed this! thanks!
Hey Luke. I have to tell you...I don't even build models but your videos are just wonderful. Your recording style, your narration and your explanations just make me feel like I could do anything that you can even though I'm well aware of the fact that you're an artist and I would fail miserably if I attempted any of the things you do. I don't even think I could open the packages of the things you use lol. Anyway, thank you for your contribution and keep up the great work.
Your models are always so delicate and precise. Hope that I could be like you someday

Fantabulous, as usual!
Luke, up to your normal high standard, a pleasure to watch. Regards. John.
Fantastic palms, I wound up using old fashioned net curtain wire for the trunks minus the plastic shield and piece of reinforcing wire to bend the trunk, it was a lot quicker for me, thankyou great tutorials

Awesome again, Luke ! :)
Ok so I've always had this weird fascination with miniatures. I think it started when I was little. I always wanted to be able to shrink down and run around the models. Probably why 'A Castle in the Attic' was my fave book when I was younger. Anyway I've been inspired to start making my own and I was wondering what medium is the most 'forgiving' for newbies? Where I live I have immediate access to foam board, but I was also looking at these things called skinny sticks that look like little 2x4's, and was wondering if working with them might be a bit more challenging. Once again love these vids.
@BoulderCreekRailroad
7 жыл бұрын
That would be so cool to shrink down and wander around your miniature creation! I personally think foam is easy to use and it's perfect for a base for the diorama but for making small structures I think the 2x4 sticks would work as well and I don't think they would be to difficult even for a beginner. The best thing you can do is just give it a try... If it doesn't work you will have taught yourself how not to do it and next time you'll be better... If that makes sense 😄
@MikeCustalow
7 жыл бұрын
So I started experimenting with the skinny sticks. They are about the same thickness as a popsicle stick. Do you have any tips for getting even cuts with them? I picked an exacto blade set, but I've already noticed that getting an even or straight cut with them can be a bit of a challenge. Oh I was also wondering if Modg Podg is good for working with wood or do you just use that for the scenic stuff?
Excellent vid!
You are a genius! I cannot understand why you don’t have a million subscribers. Great work!
You are very talented and creative!!! Your videos make me like Evan I could do it!!! Thanks for your wonderful creations.
