Happy new year to everyone. I clean my boots regularly with baby wipes and always if they get dusty or dirty after a walk. They are always flawless and I would like to add a special soap and oil treatment at some point.

The Paniolos in Hawaii use Coconut oil on their saddles, which seem to almost have a black color to them over time. Perhaps unpurified oil? Salt air / sun / humidity? Maybe they were just dark oiled saddles from the start. Also, I’ve never seen a metal tool used on the welt. Interesting.

My boots are in need of a deep clean and a good oiling. What kit do you recommend for a pair of Red Wings. I know I could take them to Red Wing for a clean. It would be cheaper ordering the cleaner and oil rather then drive north or south to a Red Wing store. What kind of laces do you recommend?

Saddle soap is a good start to begin with. If its in need of reclaiming the original colour, use shoe cream colour that matches it, or go lighter. At the end do some polishing. One note any oil darkens the Color. If you need to go further to make it waterproof, then the last step would be using dubbing oil . But again it might darken the colour. But it will last you a long time if you follow in order of I noted, you should be good. Of course those items are an expense too 😄. I started making my own saddle soap, cream, polish & daubing oil following KZread channels just for a hobby. Now my shoes & boots are shiny

@chiya2006 I had to use a zip tie tip to get oil onto the leather where the leather gets sown to the composite material. It was really such a tight space, I could not reach with my finger.
Does the coconut oil provide any water resistance or weather proofing?

It kind of works at first. But coconut oil can spoil as it's left in the leather. If that happens you have a pair of boots with rotten oil stuck in them that smells bad and doesn't do it's job conditioning the leather anymore. This was a big fad in the boot world a few years back but it quickly faded because of that.

The shelf time of cocoanut oil is times longer than other vegoils.Not refrigerated it doesnt rot for years.Downside-overdoing it softens the leather too much,it becomes too stretchy and boots are prone to deform.Helps a lot to losen tight or narrow boots but for regular use i prefer neats foot oil mixed with beeswax and carnauba on calf skin or cow hide.

Yes it works. Lotion is one of the best kept secrets for reviving leather.
