I’ve learned so much from you and other KZreadrs! I think the reality is that the pet care standards in AUS and NZ are insanely higher and more regulated than most of the world, especially the USA. Being from the USA, I’ve become appalled at what our pet stores sell and recommend now that I know how dangerous they are! So overall, thank you. I know awhile ago you were saying he wouldn’t show your birds and videos anymore because you got a lot of hate and criticism, but I’m glad you decided to continue, because it was really important for me and others to become better pet owners.

I live in Australia and even thought our pet shops are waaaaay better than those in the US, they still sell tiny cages, circular cages, dowel perches, plastic perches, concrete and sandpaper perches, rainbow fruit pellets, mirrors, happy huts, cotton rope in toys, plastic dinky toys that provide no enrichment.... it's sad. many also say seed is a perfectly fine diet, and they clip the birds wings for you or recommend it 😭 it's terrible! edit: not to mention, a lot of them sell mass bred birds who often have poor genetics and health issues because of this, and some stores have terrible conditions that they keep the birds it. it needs to get better!

Nice video, Shelly! It's so sad the amount, or lack there of, rather, knowledge of pet store employees. We are supposed to trust them but their parrot education is decades old knowledge and minimal, if anything at all. Which is why my husband and I go to our local chain with our birds to offer education to people who are interested in parrots, even though they only sell budgies there. The manager is actually really awesome about it.

I've learned SO much from you, thank you!! Dovel Perches: There's one that followed that I use to keep the roof open (It's a Montana Madeira I cage) which I think is fine, but I don't think it's a big problem as I have alot of natural branches and perches aswell. The "Pedi-Perch" was recommended to me by the shop, and I bought one just because I trusted them and they seemed genuine about how much they cared, but if they're that bad I'll definitely take em out. I do have 2 "protein stones" my lil Kirby likes to nibble on, and I also have a calcium perch which I can put where the pedi-perch were. Kirby has never used it more than as a "stepping stone" to get over to his other perches, so it's safe to assume he won't hate me for removing it. He has a "Y" shaped natural perch he LOVES!! Luckily I looked up alot info beforehand and didn't get a nesting box or " happy hut" - Definitely not a good thing for birdies.

cuttle bones are too soft to wear down their beaks, but if you give them lots of toys with wood in them, they'll gnaw on the wood and their beaks will wear down from that!! other good things for birds to chew and shred include- untreated pine wood (if dyed it should be with vegetable dyes), coconut, mahogany seed pods, natural sticks, seagrass, palm leaves, corn husks, paper, cardboard, natural foliage (check the plant is safe and also hasn't been sprayed with chemicals), wicker, loofah, and if you're australian you can use banskia pods, gum nuts, Paperbark sticks... obviously some of these materials will wear down the beak faster than others (paper and palm leaves, etc, won't do much but birds still love shredding them!)

I have a question. I don't own a happy hut but my bird loves to go under the towels and blankets. In fact, my baby has a favorite handkerchief that she likes to cover it when sleeping in her cage (she's at least 2-3 weeks old and still scared of holding a perch and only held to our fingers). I'm scared that it may trigger my baby's hormones and such just like you said. Is it okay?

Thank you for your video! I have a question tho: I got a female cockatiel a week ago and I have to buy her a friend. The thing is idk if I should buy another female or male cockatiel. I've heard that when you have two cockatiels of the same gender, there's a higher chance for them to be kind of sexually attracted to you, but if you get two of opposite genders, the chance is way smaller. So pls could you correct me if I'm wrong cuz I'm not sure about this. Another question that I have: Either way, if I nevertheless decide to buy a cockatiel of an opposite gender, is it possible to avoid breeding at all cost? Cuz I've heard that without toys or equipment that ressemble a nest, two brids won't breed at all and won't have eggs. Are these statements true? I would be so grateful if you respond :)

Hey. I've been researching for the past 3 months cause I want to buy a cockatiel but I still have one doubt. Which one is better? A female or male cockatiel? Cause for what I've researched the female in puberty lay eggs and get hormonal about it and males get territorial and sometimes more violent in puberty. What do you think would be the best for a beginner? And why did u choose 2 females?

hi! i'm not saeshell but i hope i can still help. all birds get hormonal in hormone season, cutting out any huts, warm mushy food, etc is only *cutting down* the severity of hormones. it's important to not encourage any hormonal behaviors for both genders, this includes not petting them in undesired areas, encouraging egg laying, etc. though, i personally would say a female during hormones is more risky, since they have the risk of laying eggs and getting eggbound. both genders will get territorial if you encourage hormones. as long as you don't, though, i would say that both genders are fine. males tend to be a bit noisier, not loud per say, but definitely noisy and persistent, while females will normally tend to be quieter. males can get more violent when it comes to hormones, but as long as you are not treating *yourself* as their mate, you shouldn't be seeing mating behaviors averting onto you. keep in mind it's important to know that *all birds* are different, no matter the gender, species, etc., they are all going to give you different experiences. these are only stereotypes and gender behaviors when it comes to birds, but it's important to realize that no 2 birds will act alike.

@@greyiti9399 ty. You helped a lot. Just one question. Not encourage hormonal behavior in a male would be mainly not touch him in the feathers and only pet him in his head and neck right? But if he gets violent in puberty what should i do to stop or prevent besides the touching part?

Luckily I have a really good pet shop that cares about their birds, and they don’t even sell those things. And if you do buy a bird it has to be cage trained for a few weeks to make sure when it transitions to a cage that is will still eat. So that’s good :)
