Cochineal Red comparison battle and mixes with Schmincke Retro Palette

These colors are sooo beautiful, lets swatch them out, you pick your favorite. Do you like how they mix? Or do you think they are stand alone colors? Please let me know in the comments if you would put this in our main palette that we are building here or if you think this color is too fugitive.
Thank You For Watching!

I want that Schminke one so bad 🤤 and yes, I would put that in my palette. I don’t make art for people so it doesn’t matter.🧟‍♂️

Thank you for your video; the swatches are quite helpful. I had already purchased a tube of the Schmincke cochineal from Jackson. Schmincke says cochineal isn't lightfast, so they recommend taking photos of any art you create with it. Because I'm a lightfastness fan, I will only play with the cochineal. You may already know this, though your viewers might not: It's usually less expensive to order Schmincke and Winsor & Newton from Jackson, even with shipping, because US companies must pass along the import taxes and fees.

I also love this vintage look. Especially the font. 😄 I have a weak spot for the (mostly fugitive) originals like genuine indigo, sepia, aureoline, vandyke brown. Therefore I may buy that one too. More for research, exercise and fun, not for art pieces. Thank you for the nice video!

I have a weakness too for these rare originals. Ohhh Indigo, yes a beauty. I think they are wonderful in sketchbook play and for comparative value to some of the modern lightfast pigments of today. Thank you.

I was curious about this new red from Schmincke, and I love the packaging of this retro set. But, the Lutea cochineal color is more my taste, since I prefer a carmine to a red. Thanks for the swatches!

I want that Schmincke palette so bad, though I agree with you on the paint choices. I want their cochineal paint, too. Love the packaging! I prefer their cochineal to Lutea's, though they are both beautiful. Not sure I'd put a fugitive paint in a master palette. I'd like to have a palette of all rare/genuine/unusual paints. I need to win the lottery. My wishlist is too long. 😂

Thank you for your review! I prefer the Schmincke Cochenille by far. I remember the Campari years ago was also colored with Cochenille - and this color, in my opinion, really resembles the color of the drink, as far as I remember ;)

Thanks for video. I have cochineal carmine, NR4, from Della Magna and its my favorite; Schmincke's Cochineal Red is comparable hue! Nila Colori has a cochineal NR4 that is more similar to Lutea's. If the palette has a focus on lightfastness, there are many similar carmine/quin rose hues that can rival it, but if not an issue and the palette can hold it, I'd add this beautiful historic red! :)

That Schmincke colour is exactly like cochineal red looks inside my head, I'd love to switch out my Rose Madder for it. Note these two paints are made from two different pigments; one is Carmine and one is Red, so they are supposed to differ like that. Both gorgeous, but for me I prefer the Schmincke cochineal red. :)

I covet the little box set, but agree that the colours included were not well thought out. AND I also covet the Cochineal paint in the tube. It is gorgeous, and much prettier than the Lutea version. I would restrict it's use to sketches and books...I only work with lightfast colours in my artwork.

I agree Sara, the Schmincke is a beautiful red it is too bad it’s not lightfast and precautions need to be taken on it’s use. I love the little palette, but will be changing and adding colors. Thank you.

Love your channel. I know this question is off-subject from this video. Could you make a video of how you rebuilt the 48 half-pan metal palettes to fit 65 half-pans? My Daniel Smith collection is at 60 tubes, and I love how you organize your palettes.

If there were a half plan option I would add the cochineal to my historic pigments palette, there are some quite fugitives pigments there that need special treatment of final work, i.e. virtually no light exposure. I would not keep it in an everyday selection or use it for anything else, with the exception of work for reproduction. I am very familiar with it in its domestic application as an old fashioned food colouring which gets everywhere, makes a lot of red stains, which later disappear almost totally! I am not at all impressed with the Lutea version but might be if the loss of intensity was the price of some kind of light resistance. The light core will make along with the vermillion a very smooth and delicate pale skin tone, nvery retro, the raw umber is a much more opaque earth colour that will make various browns and greens. They are only similar when not used as mixing colours. I rarely do anything requiring such skin tones so would either use the core as a warm yellow or ditch it in favour of something more useful. Maybe the cobalt green included in the retro set of six tubes… or even the blue in that set… just to stay true to the retro theme. Or add a Schmincke gold, to make this little palette a bit more lush!

I am surprised they didn’t offer it in a pan as well. I really wish it had a better lightfastness it is truly a beauty of a color. I too don’t do a lot of mixing of skin tones so I will be switching out colors a bit. Love your idea of the cobalt green and gold, mmmm yes! Thank you Lindy.

From what i remember of the original cochineal carmine the lutea is far more accurate, to me the schminke looks as though it has a regular pigment added to boost its colour. Cochineal was always a pink type of red not bright like schminke. It would explain how they are able to offer it at a cheaper price, im very suspicious of schminke version i think they've done the same as Daniel Smith was accused of by adding boosting pigments. Something is fishy about schminke carmine. The lutea looks spot on, exactly like the original colour.

The color historically ranges from dark deep to mid-red & did vary in coolness. I like the cooler version myself. But Schmincke is a very old German company & lists all pigments on the label. DS is a far less regulated, newer American company & sometimes does not. Schmincke’s European customer base is far more frugal & less tolerant of such practices. The listed pigment is NR4:1/Naturally-derived Red 4:1. The :1 indicates a variant. A touch of red sepia in my set gave it a lovely cool tone. Like Lutea (a Belgian co.) they also clearly disclose that it is animal derived, which it historically was & still is. They used to sell the genuine dry pigment which I think is now discontinued because it’s fugitive. It’s not an expensive pigment & is frequently used in food (!). The paints in these palettes are based on historical pigments that focused on mixing qualities - not to everyone’s taste. But great for those who appreciate that experience. 😊

I know the Lutea is very traditional in their pigments. I do love both of them, and tend to fancy reds in general. I think batch and origination of the pigments can make them vary quite a bit, but I do think we won’t ever know everything in the paint. We will just have to keep on swatching and testing. Thank you.

DS was not only accused but found out. Microscopic research showed not listed pigments in great amounts in most of the Primatec paints...(Your still allowed to like them. But that is plain wrongdoing on their part.) But you accuse another company just on the look of the color (on a screen ...🙄🤐) Paints made from natural ingredients tend to vary, processing determines the variation too. And the color index was for a variety (:1). Which of the many carmine colors of history is "the original" Lutea is spot on? If something is smelly it's your comment. And 20 $ for 15 ml is not cheap...

@colorsmith659 just look at any old painting that uses it and you can see clearly what I mean. Also if you note a bright red check that it's not cinnabar or mercury because that's what used to be used exclusively for bright reds. It's pretty obvious if you look. Also my palette is solely schminke so I have nothing personal against them, but in this case I don't think their completely telling the whole story, I'm sure it has some genuine carmine just not solely that though. Genuine Carmine is my favourite colour and I've researched it extensively as a result, would love a lab to look at it, would be very interesting.

If you think there's something "fishy", maybe that's because the Schmincke paint is not a Carmine at all. They don't call it Magenta or Carmine; they call it Cochineal RED. That Lutea is made with the pigment NR4, which has a magenta kind of colour. Schminke use a different pigmenet; NR4:1, which is a warmer sort of deep red, so it's not a straight comparison.
