War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
War for the Planet of the Apes is a 2017 American science fiction action film[5] directed by Matt Reeves, who co-wrote it with Mark Bomback. The sequel to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), it is the third installment in the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise and the ninth film overall.[6] It stars Andy Serkis as Caesar, alongside Woody Harrelson and Steve Zahn. In the film, conflict between apes and humans has escalated into full war, and Caesar sets out to avenge those he has lost.

There's a book called Caesar's Story which is a telling of Caesar to Cornelius from Maurice. It goes though all three movies and adds some things not in them in between the films. It's a nice quick read. Since Maurice is my favorite, I needed to get it.

So many references to original movies - Cornelius, Maurice, Nova, Cesar names... C. Heston gave Nova her name just as Maurice gave the girl. While we all wait for the 4th one to come out next month would be great to see you watch the remaining 4 from the original movies; You'll understand the whole series of events how the apes ruled and the humans became primitive, the history between them, what destroyed the human civilization, time travel, etc.

Great reaction Coby like always, love this one. I don't think anyone expected movies about talking apes taking over the world to be as emotionally impactful as they were. Such a brilliant reboot of this series and Andy Serkis was a big hand in that. Steve Zahn (who plays Bad Ape) is such an underrated actor deserves all the praise from his performance in this movie. Matt Reeves even said that Steve’s ability to bring balance between comedy and emotional moments in the movie made it work so well. I absolutely his performancein. Everything aside, I think this movie has the best overall CGI use I have ever seen. Rise was great, Dawn even better, but War just makes the apes look absolutely real and it still holds up. I'm hyped for Kingdom, even though I am wary as Reeves is no longer involved. Keep yo the good work.

@@reesebn38 I only judge movies after i saw them! For what i read about that the filmaker Speaking with Empire Magazine, revealed that the reason Serkis isn’t in the newest Planet of the Apes movie is that the actor is simply “too iconic,” prompting Ball to instead consider bringing Serkis back in later movies instead. “We talked about it, for sure,” Ball stated. “Like, ‘Could you play another ape character?’ I entertained that thought for a long time, because I thought it would be f-ing cool. And Matt [Reeves] would always say, ‘Andy is the best actor I’ve ever worked with.’ He’s just too iconic, in a way. So we decided it’s probably best to think about future movies where maybe he can come in.”

I really enjoy the one where the person edited it so on the left side of the screen, it showed the actors doing the scenes in their motion capture suits, and on the right they played it against the actual movie scene. It’s so awesome!

Caesar is basically Moses. He frees his people from captivity, guides them through the desert and leads them to the promised land but doesn't get to enter the promised land himself because he betrayed his highest principle, Ape no kill Ape (in the Bible, Moses doesn't enter the promised land because God is kinda petty lol). As for the Statue Of Liberty...well....there is one in Vegas so it could theoretically be that one (though the one in Vegas is smaller I think) and it would make sense geographically because these movies take place in California so they could cross the desert into Nevada. That wouldn't explain the ocean in the original film though, unless by the time of POTA, the West Coast has eroded.

He really brought Caesar to life. And I love what they did with the character of Nova in this one. Very different from the Nova in the 1968 film and very original. Credit to Amiah Miller in her portrayal of Nova, especially playing a character who could not speak. Steve Zahn was great as Bad Ape. Woody Harrelson was amazing as the Colonel. I remember watching him when I was a teenager in the 80's on the TV series Cheers. He has come a long way since then. The end of this movie, when Caesar dies, never fails to bring tears to my eyes.

All his life, Caesar was torn between being an ape raised by humans (in fact he never met or knew his birth parents) and the nature of who he is. I like to think that seeing that in his final moments, made him feel like it was all worth it.

I went into this movie expecting it to be an action epic, but instead I got a biblical story, and I couldn't be happier. I honestly thought Rocket was gonna die when he surrendered himself. I thought he'd fight Red, then the Colonel would hold a gun to his head and ask if he was alone or not, and then Rocket would look around at the other Apes, it'd be deathly quiet, and for the first time, he'd speak, saying, "I'm never alone." He'd give Caesar one final look, then shout, "APES TOGETHER, STRO---" then Colonel would pull the trigger.

In the first movie you yourself pointed out that astronauts were sent into space, like in the original. If you watch the trailer for the new movie now, you will notice that all the people who are still alive are wearing primitive clothes. All except for one woman, who can be seen wearing a tank top and pants. Either that's a mistake or this woman isn't from that era. It can be assumed that this woman is a daughter of one of the astronauts. Since the creators of the new movie already said that this is not time travel, the astronauts could have made an emergency landing on an alien planet and it took a generation until at least this woman came back to earth and found the planet full of apes. That would close the circle to the original. The new Ape has said his name umpteen times, you're just ignoring it. Bad Ape is his name.

Since we started in northern California I assume the desert to most likely Nevada or near abouts. Given the groups lack of supplies and Caesar's wounds I don't see them traveling much farther let alone all the way to New York. Ultimately from a scientific point of view the Statue of Liberty scene from the original move doesn't make any sense. Any natural phenomenon that could pick up the statue and physically move it from the New York area would absolutely destroy it in the process. And for New England to be permanently transform into an hot, arid desert would likely take millions of years of continental drift and tectonic plate movement.

You might enjoy the rest of the original ones, but the two sets of movies don't tie in exactly. They established a lore with the original ones different from this series. Seeing just the first one it fits together pretty good.

Steve Zahn was Bad Ape, well, his voice. That was the only name he had 😥 I like the way they used the name Nova from the car for the girl's name to pay homage to Nova in the very first 1968. As always, great reaction, Coby.

The best ending to a trilogy!! So epic! I cried my eyes out. Please go back and watch Beneath the, Escape from, Conquest of, Planet of the Apes (1970-72). Beneath is kind of strange but Escape and Conquest are excellent. You will see a circle of events that sort of connect the new trilogy. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is almost a remake of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. The OG Caesar is very much like the new one.

Notice Nova lost her speech but she still retained higher brain function how else did she learn/understand sign. Nova's caretaker (dad?) was still able to talk and presumable he was around her when she was sick. So taking this information, it's why when the colonel ops to have ceasar kill him it's bc he realized he still had his higher brain function and he had killed his son in vain. He just couldn't verbally speak.

No in the original with Charleston Heston it was the survivors of the final World War that couldn't speak it's revealed in Beneath Planet of the Apes. The Old and New Planet of the apes have entirely different origin stories they are only loosely related. There was a completely different version from these two staring Mark Wahlberg

Yeah, sad ending. But, that’s the potential cost of leadership, in dire times. That’s why it resonates better than the happy ending. The desert is also the symbolic imagery of Moses leading the Israelites across the desert to the promised land. The avalanche was also a sort of baptism. Washing away the past, marking the the line between the old and new. Sometimes when things seem a little strange, it’s because writers are using symbols. Notice the “crucified” apes, and Caesar also being one of them, before eventually dying in his efforts to give the apes their freedom. These things are etched deep inside of us, going back thousands of years, and so they are a sort of shorthand for the greater stories the writers are invoking. Some people use symbols with more finesse than others. This film was maybe a C+ to B- in that department. Overall, I liked it, because I love Caesar. But, the first film is so much brighter and enjoyable, that the dour mood of the sequels made them a hard adjustment for me. They had to grow on me for a while, despite loving the ape culture and the individual apes like Maurice and Bad Ape, who is sooo adorable. Ha.

I think that is the desert in the original I took this as they started of on the left side of America in San Francisco and then the desert was them travelling to the right side of America near New York And I think in Benith the Planet of the Apes they established the original movie is set in New York even if it dosnt look like it I think we are supposed to just pretend something happened to turn NY into a desert and jungle and if the beach dosnt look like NY switch your brain off They will probably do a better job making look more like New York if the new movies get to that part

Caesar dying is sad, yes. But if you look as these three films as the story of Caesar, then his death brings the story to a definite end. If you want to get symbolic...Caesar is Moses, who led his people to freedom, and through the desert, but Moses didn't enter the "Promised Land". (To take the Moses analogy further - Moses wasn't allowed to enter the Promised Land because of one incident when he lost faith in God; Caesar disobeyed his own law one time, by letting Koba fall to his death.)

The desert is symbolic of the original movie. Remember there are no deserts in NY so what the original was showing is that during the assumed atomic or nuclear bombs dropped on the USA turned the Eastern Seaboard into desert wastelands. The confusion is that in the original the apes knew the history of human civilization and how they destroyed it during a war that ended by atomic or nuclear weapons. This reboot doesn’t claim this, they claim that mankind dies off due to a ape or monkey flu that was created in a lab. I’m the original the apes feared human technology and empathy for apes and nature in general so if a human was smart or aware that apes were the oppressors and would try to escape with other humans they were deemed a threat and lobotomized. In this new reboot the apes didn’t fear humans and just wanted to live in peace but humans hated apes because they blamed apes for the virus that almost wiped out all of mankind even though it was humans who created the virus. The original will always be my favorite because the plot and ending with the humans finding the head of the Statue of Liberty is absolutely iconic and mind blowing. These reboots that rely on lab created viruses and monkey flus are tropes that have been used so many times in movies such as contagion, outbreak, I am legend, world war Z, and dozens more I could list.

Easter👏 eggs👏 you👏 don’t👏 get!👏 Including for Beneath, which you’re gonna watch! 🥳 But there are some you would get, like Nova and Cornelius ofc. But did you consider the apes strung up on the Xs looking like the classic scarecrows?! Chimps have an average lifspan of 12 years, sometimes 15, but on rare occasion can live up to 60. The oldest known male and female were 66 and 70 respectively. I don’t wanna say you’re lucky, but you kind of are, to have not read the prequel novel for this because it made you love Cornelia and Blue Eyes. And then they get killed very early in this movie! 🤬😭 They all but explicitly said “these are your apes that you left to embark on your revenge mission.” I’m honestly kind of confused how you didn’t get that 😂 In the novelization the Colonel reveals that Malcolm from Dawn actually met with him to try and talk him out of fighting the apes. Malcolm didn’t walk out of that room 😞 Nova’s carrying the mutated virus, and the Colonel had all the ones who refused to kill the infected killed. I’m pretty sure they would shoot her. Or at the very least the Colonel would Are you saying you would take poop to the head in stride? 😂 Judy Greer is absolutely wasted. She did not need to be Cornelia. She does almost nothing across all 3 films, even when she’s way more significant in the latter two. Lake had more to do in 1! I am truly baffled by people who say these movies are just action and effects. I am glad you’re clearly not one of them
