@@maxfrankow1238 It was actually a mix of everything that happened that changed Kreese into the extremely ruthless, cold and merciless person he is. Betsy's death definitely affected Kreese the most as it permanently scarred him and psychologically messed him up for life. So his mom's suicide when he was a young man, the extreme bullying he got because of his mother's actions, his Vietnam Captain, George Tuners cruel lessons and then the last person who meant everything to Kreese, his love of his life, his beloved Betsy died in a car accident, that was the last straw for Kreese, He had nothing left and he finally shredded his humanity, like Turner always wanted him to do, fully embracing the merciless attitude he would go on to use the rest of his life.

Businesses fail because those that get hired need to fit the culture instead of hiring the best. I think Kreese is just someone who's still at war. He died (figuratively) in Vietnam when he had nothing left to come home to. Now war is all he knows, he needs that conflict to feel alive, he needs to feel like he's fighting for something. That's why he cares so much about something that, on the outside, seems really silly. This war between dojos is the only conflict that he can find and the only thing that makes him feel alive inside. War is all he has now. Just my theory though.

Even before Vietnam, his life wasn't too much different than war. And not only is that what he finds meaning in, it's also what inspires his teachings to Cobra Kai. If you take what he teaches Cobra Kai to do and apply the philosophy to an active warzone rather than the San Fernando Valley, it becomes less of a toxic influence and more of genuinely good if morally dubious advice. To John Kreese, life itself is war, and the only way to survive a war is to become a soldier.

He killed his commander in cold blood and brought back home that philosophy and taught it to others. Mr miyagi had his world turned upside down when he heard that his wife and son died but he never lost himself and left the war behind.

As someone who was bullied as a kid, I have SERIOUS anger issues. A lot of media portrays the victims of bullying as natural born 'heroes', but at the end of the day we were just victims. We weren't stopping other people be bullied, often we didn't stand up for ourselves or those around us... we just took it. And the media we watched held us up as 'great' because we weren't the guys doing the punching, that we were stronger because of that trauma. Well, I am stronger because of that trauma... but I constantly struggle with my temper. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of friends I love and I've become braver as the years go on, I always strive to do what I think is right and continually question what that is. But there's something inside me, a beaten animal that truly believes that all those friends can't care about a guy like me, that they're all just waiting to turn on me. That truly believes the true face of people is cruel, because that's what I was shown for almost my entire childhood. Who wants to lash out and hurt people before they hurt me, that wants to be strong and show I'm stronger than those around me so they think twice about belittling me. To make a long story short: there's a bully in me too. The first of my bullies was a kid named Oliver Oozeman. He literally found me out to torment me, made a real production of it to all the other kids in our year at school. He wanted everyone to know he was a 'badass', and not to fuck with him, and he had a shitload of pent up agression. The outlet was me. Oliver was abused by his mother every day at home, and his Dad was never around to stop it. His home life was hell, and I still remember his tearful face as he confessed to me on the last day I ever saw him how TERRIFIED he was of moving schools, because he wouldn't have that sense of power and the safety it gave him. I didn't understand all of that at the time, I was a kid, but as I've gotten older I've realised that the desire to stand on others for safety isn't something innate: it's a disease passed on by the cruelty of others, who in turn had it passed on to them. I'm not saying bullying is natural, or that it shouldn't be fought. I'm not saying that people aren't drawn to cruelty for reasons other than self defence. What I AM saying is to be careful of thinking yourself the hero purely because you were a victim who found strength: heroism isn't determined by the strong vs. the weak, or those who earn their own safety vs those who sit down and take the abuse. Heroism, or morality to put it in a more realistic sense, is determined by what you do for those around you as WELL as yourself. I'm not telling you to forget the pain, or the suffering inlficted. I'm telling you to do your best to stop seeing it as a lens over your life; be willing to trust that there is more to people than the cruelty you've been shown. I'm asking a lot, because people CAN be cruel for no reason at all, and trust is hard to find when you've never been shown any. I feel lucky to have found the friends I have, and to have a family who supported me through the pain rather than being the cause of it. Without them I probably would be a very different person right now, maybe a 'stronger' one, but I'm not convinced a happier one. Find your balance, for you and those around you. Let the pain teach you and make you kinder, not harder and cold. And beyond all else, even as we strive to combat the cruelty of others, feel sorry for those who can't see any other way: this was a lesson they were taught... the hard way.

It really delving into humanity by bringing depth to these characters, going beyond "good" and bad" and showing that everyone has a story and they have their own way of dealing with it..whether its right or wrong. So Kreese is blaming himself for a lot of things. He's got PTSD. Didn't have the guidance or the love to bring him out of the bullshit he experienced and spent the rest of his life losing his way, until he was too far gone. Or..is he too far gone? Fun Fact: the actor for John Kreese in karate kid also played in First Blood: 2 It’s funny cause in Cobra Kai he’s a Vietnam Veteran, same with Rambo. And they were both on screen together John Kreese and John Rambo, ironic huh
