Coast to Coast: Solo Hiking Across the Country - Day 13 (4K)

Day 13 of solo hiking the Coast to Coast, I woke to a beautiful morning of blue skies & bright sunshine. I left Lordstones & went on along the trail through woodland & undulating terrain across the hilly North York Moors.
After climbing uphill into the moorlands, I came across Bloworth crossing, a remote section of moorlands where the C2C and Cleveland way split. The trail took me along a 7+ mile track of dismantled railway and the stretch was slightly monotonous with little to look at, but my spirits were high as I was making good ground, and baby ground nesting birds were scurrying in the long grass by the path I walked along.
I approached the Lion inn at Blakey Ridge, and was planning to stop there for only an hour to charge my devices and a proper rest. However, what I'll discuss in the next video is that I ended up camping at Blakey Ridge as all of my devices were completely flat, and an hour wasn't enough time to charge them for the rest of the day and the whole day tomorrow. Without any charge in my phone I wouldn't have been able to tell Cameron my location & time to pick me up the following day, and for obvious safety reasons too. So, I made the decision to camp there, as a super helpful member of staff, Callum, told me it's only £3 to camp there for the night, I could charge whatever I'd need to, and he'd even arrange a lift for me the next day to Glaisdale to get me back on tack! He was an absolute lifesaver.
Anyway, I slept well in my tent that night, surrounded by a few other campers as we watched the sun set & the full strawberry moon in the lilac sky.

Hi Jennifer, thanks for another wonderful instalment of your C2C journey, it looked like some great scenery, loved the little Grouse chicks, very comical 😂. Looking forward to what I presume will be the last leg😩. Hope you are keeping well, cheers Glyn.

I had to shake my head when you said you preferred the woods. I live in the eastern US, where most of the walking is through woods. To get a view, you have to take a side trail to an overlook, and even there it can be hard to see over the treetops. I did the C2C last September. The day we did this stretch was gloriously clear. I didn’t even know there was a lower route - I’m so glad we did the higher one. Yes, the ups and downs were tough, but so rewarding. It ended up being my favorite day. I do realize how rare woods are for those of you in the UK, but the lack of woods is one of the (many!) reasons I absolutely love hiking in your country! Thanks for this chance to re-live my spectacular C2C walk! I’m really enjoying this series.

Haha fair enough! And not all the time, I do love a good high vantage point view of the hills of course. It's just that day was pretty hot, so I was grateful for the shade of the trees, as well as just being in love with forests & woodland in general 😁 So happy my videos are helping you re-live your hike & that you're enjoying watching them! Thank you 😊

I live in the area and hike and run these trails a lot, always interesting to hear other people's views on the area! Whether people tackle the hills (the three sisters) after Lordstones or take the lower route they always love it. It's also unanimous that the section from Bloworth is a proper slog, even more fun when the weather turns 😂 Stayed at Blakey while doing the Lyke Wake Walk, great place and great staff!

We Brits sure do love the moan when the temperature gets above 70F/20C, but hey we do not often get this sort of constant Sun and Blue skies. PS You will LOVE the Rosebury Topping section fairly flat being an old Mine railway route. Lion Inn is well worth the over night stop. Sit back and let someone else do the cooking for one Night. The main walk I do here in Toronto these days is an old railway line; lovely walk, tree-lined the entire way so it keeps the sun off (mostly), and you occasionally come across a raccoon or other animal. Right in the middle of Toronto itself too, but nice and quiet apart from the 3 or 4 roads you have to cross every now and then.

Oh that sounds lovely, so idyllic. Lucky to have some local trails to do, and I know you’re probably used to seeing them but in the UK we don’t have raccoons, I’d love to see one in the wild! I think I saw one at a zoo once 😂 I think they’re super cute

@@OrenjenWe get them rooting around in the bins every now and then, or you occasionally see them just wandering around looking a little worried (they're pretty much nocturnal), but the y're cute little buggers. We also get possums every now and then, rabbits, squirrels are everywhere here, and we saw a fox trotting down the road in front of our house the other week when we went out early for a walk. And then we have skunks, which so far I've only seen at a decent enough distance not to get worried about being sprayed.

@@OrenjenWhen I lived in Brighton, we used to see foxes fairly regularly because we lived by one of the train lines, and they'd wander up and down the tracks looking for mice / rats to eat. That was the first fox I've seen here in Toronto though,

The small baby Birds were Grouse, bred soley so the local land owners can shoot them. Just as they did on Saddleworth Moor which triggered the Mass Tresspass that prevented Ramblers using Public Rights of Way across the Moors near Manchester.
