Coalition’s supermarket divestiture power proposal is ‘about supporting consumers’

Opposition leader Peter Duttion has spruiked the Coalition’s divestiture powers proposal to fight supermarket price-gouging from Googong, NSW.
“I’ve been very clear about this; this is a policy that I believe very strongly in, it’s a policy that David Littleproud believes very strongly in, it’s a policy that Angus Taylor believes very strongly in,” Mr Dutton said during a media conference on Thursday.
“Our policy is about supporting consumers.”

the farmers need to be payed properly for their hard work, what coles and Woolworth pay them is criminal, farmers getting payed should be a priority.

At least Dutton can talk off the cuff, as opposed to stuttering Albo.

The two big ones forced outside competition from coming in by threatening suppliers. I call that organised crime

I like how they pretend that Coles, wollies and bunning aren't all owned by the same people

Johannes Leak's cartoon in today's Australian sums Dutton up perfectly: "Populism; the cheap and easy place to shop".

Australia has always had low competition due to our geographical location. Can't see it changing. Just looking at regional places like Mackay which have lots of small independent non franchise affiliated stores shows its the business people in the town who can compete if they want, but who would want to at 5% profit margin unless your doing lots of cash under the table. Sorry makes no sense to me, supermarkets aren't the problem, the rising loop of charge more, pay more for stock and stay afloat are the issues and that should be cooling.

Leave bunnings alone. They are cheap, convenient and have awesome return policies. They are the best retailer ever. Anything i need around the house, for DIY they usually have it in stock and cheaper than i can find it elsewhere

Maintaining the fundamental conditions for(more) a competitive marketplace to flourish & propagate is a great idea too. Perhaps if that known concept of success was in existence then just maybe WoolWorths Hardware competitor to Bunnings may have worked out.

Sure the idea sounds good. It's the details - that matter. 1. The sites Coles & Woolworths choose - are the best locations - to place their stores. And you can say - break up the the size of Coles & woolworths. That comes down - who can afford the rents - for the best sites to put shops in. That's the real battle here. 2. The issue here - is you can say break up a brand. 3. There's things like - they don't have to give up their sites. 4. Location is everything - in the food game. 5. Government own and run the railways - and the railways in Australia are complete mess. 6. There are no rail corridors - for moving a lot of freight in Australia between states quickly. 7. And this is a policy - that state governments and the federal government should have been working on now for decades. 8. Freight is the biggest cost - and the modernization of freight movement - such as - self driving - freight trains. 9. The opening up of new large oil fields in Australia. 10. New oil refineries to be built. The issue of the cost of fuel - is a huge driver - in why costs are rising so fast. The issue here is - you need a policy that addresses all of the issues. Dutton sounds more like a labor politician here - I am going to smash the big companies. Really - this is something that labor can attack on. However labor are worse off in this situation - in that everyone knows - labors policies on energy have created - the constant merry go round - of prices rising. Due to the settings of labors policies- they will keep rising.
