The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (commonly referred to as Coachella or the Coachella Festival) is an annual music and arts festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, located in the Inland Empire's Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert. It was co-founded by Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen in 1999, and is organized by Goldenvoice, a subsidiary of AEG Live. The event features musical artists from many genres of music, including rock, pop, indie, hip hop, and electronic dance music, as well as art installations and sculptures. Across the grounds, several stages continuously host live music. The main stages are the: Coachella Stage, Outdoor Theatre, Gobi Tent, Mojave Tent, and Sahara Tent; a smaller Oasis Dome was used in 2006 and 2011, while a new Yuma stage was introduced in 2013 and a Sonora stage in 2017.
The festival's origins trace back to a 1993 concert that Pearl Jam performed at the Empire Polo Club while boycotting venues controlled by Ticketmaster. The show validated the site's viability for hosting large events, leading to the inaugural Coachella Festival being held over the course of two days in October 1999-just three months after Woodstock '99. After no event was held in 2000, Coachella returned on an annual basis beginning in April 2001, as a single-day event. In 2002, the festival reverted to a two-day format. Coachella was expanded to a third day in 2007 and eventually a second weekend in 2012; it is currently held on consecutive three-day weekends in April, with each weekend having identical lineups. Organizers began permitting spectators to camp on the grounds in 2003, one of several expansions and additions of amenities that have been made in the festival's history.
Coachella showcases popular and established musical artists, as well as emerging artists and reunited groups. Coachella is one of the largest, most famous, and most profitable music festivals in the United States and all over the world. Each Coachella staged from 2013 to 2015 set new records for festival attendance and gross revenues. The 2017 festival was attended by 250,000 people and grossed $114.6 million. The success of Coachella led to Goldenvoice establishing two additional music festivals at the site, the classic rock-oriented Desert Trip in 2016, and the annual Stagecoach country music festival in 2007. #Coachella #FestivalFashion #Coachella2019 #CoachellaFestival #CoachellaFashion #MusicFestival #SonicTemple #Lollapalooza #ShakyKnees #BostonCalling

There was an art movement in the 18th century called "Rococo" which had a similar social function for the home. It started out as a mildly interesting style of extravagance that basically became a parody of itself as it became obvious how superficial and OTT it was, and clearly geared towards rich show-offs trying to outshine each other. Coachella does that in the 21st century, outside.

As one with a biased opinion, as i went to weekend 2 this year, I went to coachella for the music. Beyond a lot of the "big names" are some amazing artists. As a whole coachella was a awesome experience and I got to see tons of artists I was really wanting to see. I saw over 30 artists for 470, did not view that as a bad deal. That said I slept in my car so I didn't really need to pay for camping.

Same. I’ve gone 14 years. Super biased. But I’d say this reflects some 20% of attendees. Most everyone else is wearing shorts and shirts, running around to catch as many sets, or finding a good spot to eat a popsicle near a stage. It’s changed over the years, sure, but music fans vastly outnumber the assholes. Still the best fest in the US.

Speaking of terrible "music" related things, my local rock station had a thing called "Madness of Rock" back around March Madness, with 64 bands in a head-to-head tournament style. Out of all 64 bands in the Tournament, Hinder and Staind somehow made it all the way to the final round, and HINDER somehow won it all. Needless to say, I lost a lot of faith in humanity.

my major issue with a lot of the bigger festivals in the UK is people will buy tickets before any bands have been announced because people can brag about getting the tickets first. then often those people complain that they hate the lineup. this has also lead to an abundance of bands who dont seem to do venue tours anymore, instead they think "oh if we do a few festivals, that's as good as a tour" which pushes people who dont want to go to a festival to think "well this band i love is playing and they dont actually tour anymore so if i want to see them, i've got to spend £200, take a weekend off work, spend £50-100 on camping equipment" plus outdoor festivals are a fucking nightmare for stuff like logistics and the environment. a festival was held at a park near mine and the place was left a fucking bombsite only with empty beer bottles and needles with unknown substances in it. the social media thing happens here too. not to the same degree but still happens. you see endless pictures on social media and you ask "what bands did you see" and you get the reply of "i'm just here to get drunk"

The lineup was especially good at capturing artists that are really in their moment at the present day and age and not just at artists commanding nostalgic concertgoers.

The highlight was in 2014 when I saw Rob Zombie while he was on tour with John 5 and this dude I just met was cool enough to let me up on his shoulders a couple times. Motorhead was supposed to be there that year too but Lemmy got sick and Anthrax filled their slot. Most things that are very popular are average at best. You're obviously a fan of the A24 movie production company based on your profile picture. They're a great production company that produces some amazing indie and horror films. But they're nowhere near as popular as a production company like Disney, who want nothing but to pump out the safest and most profitable movies they can as quickly as possible. It's not a bad thing that quality doesn't necessarily correlate with popularity. It's especially apparent in music with how trash most pop music is. You just have to decide what's good yourself and not let pop culture decide it for you.

The 2019 woodstock lineup isn’t that bad. They got every notable act (except for The Who) still available from the 69 lineup and if you take the top three names any given day, they would all be considered headliners for a pretty big festival. For example, a big three day festival can easily have The Killers, Miley Cyrus and Santana as headliners on separate days. Same goes for Dead and Company, Chance the Rapper, The Black Keys or Jay-Z, Halsey and Imagine Dragons. I’m not arguing this is the best acts to book (TØP, Tame Impala and The Strokes are certainly better picks that Imagine Dragons or Halsey) but you can’t argue that they didn’t get some of the biggest artists of the decade along with as many 1969 acts possible. Woodstock was about getting the biggest artists from the counter culture. The only names that don’t fit from this year’s lineup is Miley Cyrus, Halsey, Imagine Dragons and Jay-Z.

The first Coachella lineup you showed looked great. I'm guessing that'll be controversial but hell, you won't see Matmos at Coachella in 2019! What year was that?

A festival I'm going to is Welcome to Rockville in Jacksonville, FL. I'm taking time off work for this.

I used to be really involved in the rave scene in the early 2000's and ever since Skrillex came on the scene its gotten over popularized and went down hill. You had way more drug related deaths and emergencies because you had so many random new people getting into the scene and not knowing how to do their drugs safely. I haven't been to a rave since 2011 and I don't miss it.
