I love these videos, the "wHeN yOu StOp GoInG fOr A gAp" crowd annoys the crap out of me. At the end of the day, bringing the car home in one piece is your responsibility, not everyone else's! Something I stressed to my racers when I was running a small private league is what you put out there at 11:00: don't ruin your race for a lost cause, let them go and counter-attack.

@@JamieLachlan But if they acknowledge he was trying to weasel out of something he knew was wrong, how else will they be able to claim that they are special and amazing and better than you and 'real racing drivers just like their hero'? If they had to admit the context, they'd have to acknowledge that they're not undiscovered racing gods who would make even Stirling Moss shed a tear at their amazing gud-ness, but instead are bog-standard hyper-aggressive dipshits clearly at fault for the crash they just caused by deciding 'WWSD? FKN SEND IT!'...despite knowing full well they were 200' too far back to have a claim to the line, chucking it in with a weight shift far too harsh to keep it stuck, braking 100' too late to get it stopped in time, are generally unable to tell the difference between 'the car is going to apex high, leaving enough space between its apex and the stripe (aka a gap)' and 'space between the car's current position and the inside kerb because the car in question is still closing down on its apex...and they can't have that now, can they?

JamieLachlan yep I’m a senna fan and he wasn’t perfect that’s exactly why he said that.

on the last incident i can only ever think of when Alonso was having to defend positions when his car was pants, he would always set up to compromise the guy trying to overtake so the had a slow exit and Alonso would always then cut back, get the quicker exit and often get the position back

3:36 - Guess the car behind didn't read the bumper sticker...

The Mercedes was being laped by the BMW as they are different categories. So it seems the Merc is leting the door open but the BMW has not enough space

6:24 I will disagree and say its 100% the BMW's fault. The reason the merc went wide was because of the divebomb. BMW was never going to make that corner with that entry.

I agree man. Divebombing turn 7 at Lime Rock is a rookie move and poor racecraft imo, whether you can pull it off or not. It's hard to realise there's a car beside you because the spotter doesn't say until the overtaking one is a nose in front and the mirrors won't spot it either. BMW should have done the overtaking on the straight as it's definitely faster than the merc. Plus I'm certain the Merc is actually on the correct line as you stay wide to hit the apex.

Another bit of context that bmw is a gte the merc a gt3 so the bm was probably lapping the merc maybe why the merc tried to give room on the corner

I don't disagree. It was the BMW's fault, but the M8 is a GTE car and the AMG is a GT3. That's an overlapping pass. If the BMW were just a bit more patient, it looked like the amg did leave it open for him to get by, but the BMW went too hot racing someone that was not even for position. BMW would have made that corner at that speed with ease had he not touched that curb.

The good thing about Sim Racing is that you can just laugh about these crashes rather than being worried. I call that an absolute win.

Such a great educational video! This is not just for sim racing games but also a lesson for the real world racing too. Racing rules are very complex and hard to judge sometime

All very fair. Good point to learn here is "patience is a virtue" in many of these cases. You can be angry all the time about all those other "crappy" drivers or you can just look at the one thing you can control and that is yourself. It's sooo hard to do that but when you do your races go so much better as you recognize drivers to just be wary of and back out of situations with knowing with surety soon enough they will be off the track due to an incident somewhere (but not with you! :) ).

You called out some of the biggest issues in sim racing! People do not know how to overtake or be overtaken. People think the second you get close to someone you have to go for a move right away. They don't understand the word patience or how to setup a move properly and there is no real consequence for bad decision making so people don't learn from their mistakes , they jump in another race and keep doing the same stuff.

The last incident was something I see a lot in sim racing. Taking a dive in the wrong place. That could have ended bad for both drivers. In that situation if I was in the pink car I would have realised the lead car is defending so I know he's seen me. As late as I possibly can I would switch to the outside and get lined up for a proper line through the corner and use my exit speed to get passed on the inside, even if it was the last lap, a good exit would have got him over the finish line in front assuming the lead car would go to the outside apex. Great analysing I agree with you on every situation. Love the videos, you've helped me shave off at least a second on some of my favourite tracks 👌

I have sent one of my incidents that I had in an AOR Formula Renault championship race!

Racing indycars on flat ovals has taught me a few things on overtaking on road courses, if you're not on that inside by over half a car length, back out. You see this in real life indycar, especially at tracks like Indianapolis

The same problem with what i see here is that sim driving is the same as social media. If people was actually driving the cars they would think twice as they wouldn't want to damage the car or even put a scratch on it. But online it don't matter if its crashed. Or wrecked!

The guy at 4:50 that you talk about. He kinda asked for it. Read that bumper sticker. "Don't crash me"...that told the guy behind, that's the only way to get around.

BMW and Merc situation is multiclass racing at Limerock, Merc was not hitting apex to allow BMW to pass, but BMW had too much speed

You might need to clarify a little bit at 8:18, because it seems that they were ALL the "#10 car" (even the car that was trailing behind). 😂 For some odd reason, the cars appeared to all be using the same skin.

At 5:30 also note that the BMW is a GTE car, so higher class than the GT3 Merc, so he probably thought the merc left the door open on purpose for him to pass.

Don't forget that network latency is also a thing in sim racing.

Something has really been bothering me lately and I'd really appreciate if you could help me Mr. Driver61. Lets say you are going into a medium speed corner, something like turn 13 at Spa. You turn in without braking because you've slowed the car enough, and the car rotates properly without significant understeer. Fine. Next lap, come in a bit too hot and the tires are unloaded because still not using brakes, and understeer starts. The tires have broken the grip threshhold. Does applying the brake in this case actually *move* the grip threshold of the rubber? Does the threshold move based on how much weight is on the front tires? If so, how wide is the window of pressure where the threshold moves higher? Lastly, will the threshold change based on tire angle? I.E. reducing steering angle and applying the brakes is more effective than just keeping the same angle and using the brakes? Thanks

Applying brakes will shift the weight forward and can give you more grip during understeer, but only if you have enough grip to initiate braking in the first place.

Phil, if your brake bias is set properly then light brake pressure during turning will give you more oversteer (5-10% brake pressure). This works even if you are already using all the grip on your front tires. By touching the brakes you are changing the tires *direction* of force even though magnitude is maxed out. This is all that matters to get the weigh transfer to move grip from the rear to the front. However you lost some lateral grip to achieve this. With that said, honestly the most important part about touching the brakes when coming in a bit hot is the fact that it slowed you down! To me trajectory (speed and path you take) is the most important part of going fast and balance will just get you the last little bit.

I don't see how. Still behooves the GTE to overtake safely. Slower class cars are not required to just "move out of the way". GTE simply made a mistake and misjudged his corner.

Im going to keep this really simple and in good faith. xD Is there any hope for someone playing on a controller that is just concerned with getting good at the game regardless of input method? Game of Choice: Gran Turismo Sport - PS4 (And if you're feeling less simple at all, this goes for anyone. Any suggestions? Where to look? Where to start? Golden rules?)

Yeah honestly GTS is fine with a controller, you can be competitive enough. I was comfortably an A/S driver with that, and as long as you find like-minded people, you can race and get better! Of course a wheel will be an improvement, but there's still plenty of fun to be had, and skills to learn.

I really like GTS on controller. I think the most important thing is the same as racing anywhere. Smooth inputs, have the right line and braking point. Don't throw your car through the turns, try to keep the car settled. Unfortunately the penalty system is really bad so there will be a lot of frustration but getting good lap times is possible on controller. The best way to learn in my opinion is the same in every racing game, do a lap, beat that lap, then beat that lap, then beat that lap e.t.c.... You will find ways to gain a tenth here and there and learn how to optimize the car and track. Good luck!

This first situation resembles the recent Hamilton-Verstappen Monza incident. Except it's Max who got the penalty.

On first case the black should let the blue car some room on the Next corner roles had change, second one there are three Cars fighting for the spot, the fourth driver with the fishing rod had a better catch. Third case an italian driver, i can't overtake you i push you out of track. Fourth case the Guy from the indica has no ide what he was doing a dive bombing mixed with late braking always end Up pretty bad

Can I ask ...what is the usual "Damage Level"used in these races ...or is "Damage" turned off. I personally disagree with aggressive "blocking" although I know it is allowed ...it seems like a bit of cheat. If an opponent has a faster car or line ...let him by ...especially if they taking advantage of your error & trying to overtake then. I do not give up the inside of the turn or my race line ...but if an opponent has the opportunity to pass ...I usually give them room & wait for the next time the advantage is mine. I'm obviously New to Sim racing & want to try my first "On-Line" race ...but I know nothing of the rules. ...thanks.

In iracing the rules are pretty strict on this kind of thing. Damage is always on in public sessions. Blocking is not allowed in iracing, you can defend properly, but not weaving all over the road.

I disagree with you in the first race. The blue car knew he was not dominating the S turn either because he was behind. Both cars knew the situation they were in and they both decided to take the best line possible to get “themselves” through the turn and not together. The blue car went straight without hesitation either knowing he would have the upper hand if there was contact.

Disagree on the Mercedes-bmw one being both their fault. Yeah the Merc ran wide but he was still going to make the turn. So he left himself vulnerable to a pass. But not to being used as a brake. Being pushed off track was 100% the bmw's fault by not slowing enough. And for all we know, the merc was leaving space for the bmw that had a huge run on him. The merc could either maintain his line and get hit from behind or run wide and hope the bmw raced clean.

If people tried half of these in real life racing the death toll would be enormous.

actualy in gt sport all the accidents are actualy legal. o and the person crashed gets tracklimits or collision penalty 👍🏻

Funny enough, top F1 drivers pull some of these bad overtakes quite frequently. It's the sense of entitlement from these young drivers.....

People need to learn how to use the damn brakes

First one dude is on the inside so you have to turn in later to give space, both cars should slow down much more than normal to make this as safe as possible The 2nd one could have been prevented by being in the middle of the track, yes it's slower but it's called defensive driving. After that it was just poor driving, not much else to say about that. In other words both drivers are at fault, he probably didn't want to give up the position because he just unfairly lost his but in doing so that mindset set him up for failure. That's just life though, life sucks. Of course the other driver is 100% at fault for that but I'd rather avoid an accident and fight another day than be taken out of the race entirely. Next one is not even his fault, not sure why he submitted this, sometimes it's literally not your fault. Next one is obviously the BMWs fault, he went in with too much speed and basically acted as if you did not exist. The exit speed was terrible for the merc but that still doesn't excuse the dude from behind using too much speed and causing that incident. Edit: I'm kinda bored at this point but I agree with what you've said for the most part so I'll just leave the rest to you.

hey, i was the 2nd clip in the merc, i agree i could have driven more defensively but honestly i didn't expect a lunge from that far back, it caught me by surprise and i had to turn out of the corner, the main incident from my perspective looked like i was clearly visible and looking to take the inside line, although looking further the audi was almost fully past at one point which to me, made it borderline, hence why i sent it in. thanks for your insight though :)
