    I bought this bass in surf green and made some upgrades: bone nut, Wilkinson bridge w/brass saddles, Hipshot USA ultralite mini clovers, Hipshot bass string retainer, Obsidianwire harness for Jazz bass (250K CTS pots, vintage capacitor, Switchcraft jack). Oh boy does it sing now! I can't believe how good the stock pickups are. If you get this and are considering replacing the pickups, I'd recommend changing out the control panel first. The Obsidianwire harness makes a huge difference. It will require some routing and you'll need to get a standard size control plate and knobs, but well worth it! The tuners and bone nut also make a huge difference, but the tuners are expensive. There are cheaper tuners out there, but I couldn't find any other mini clovers and had my heart set on maintaining the look. I have mixed feelings on the bridge. If anyone has recommendations on a better bridge, let me know!

  • @weightlessfilms5651

    @weightlessfilms5651

    @@GDT1124 Depends on the parts I didn't replace the pickups, but those are standard jazz size. You need short scale strings. The bridge and string tree I got are standard sized. Just be sure to look at the measurements of the bridge you're interested in and compare. Some jazz bridges are larger than others. I had my luthier carve the nut custom, but that will be smaller than a standard jazz bass nut. Full size pots probably won't fit. When I removed the control panel, the small stock pots were practically touching. I opted for the Obsidianwire harness (see above) which is for standard jazz bass. My luthier had to route a bit to make room, but it looks and sounds great. Standard jazz tuners will NOT fit; they'd be way too big. Hipshot has mini bass tuners. I opted for the mini clovers, but those are a lot more expensive than the import ones that look like guitar tuners. I'm sure those will suffice, I just wanted the right look, and couldn't find any other mini clover tuners out there. Hope that helps!

    Man, I really recommend short scales for orchestra pit work hey. You rarely go above 12th fret, the lighter tension is better on your hands for long shows, and you're usually in the dark - so no one can judge you for slouching back in your chair with a baby bass resting on your tummy

    I have one of the European-sold J&D example of this bass. (Same bass with different branding) Lovely little thing. Surprisingly good pickups and pots. Plenty of great tones and playability. You can see the Lobster smiling and grinning - with good reason. The tuners (machine heads) on mine are perfectly adequate. The fretboard has a very flat 14" radius but you soon get used to it. It does need to be oiled (lemon oil is good). The only thing you need to change are the strings. Invest in good strings and the little beauty will sing.

However, all the physical specs I found online are the same, Size, weight, shape, scale, radius, etc etc. So I believe that they are made in the same factory and only the colours are different. I am very happy with my J&D. No quality problems at all. Both brands recommended.

    I'm tempted to get one of these just to mess around with. I sold my Fender Player Mustang because it had some build quality issues. Not expecting this to be *better* than the Fender, but it's about 1/4 the price, so my expectations are calibrated accordingly. Having smaller hands and starting to get a bit of arthritis (I'm 49), it would be nice on some days to have a short-scale bass around. I liked the Mustang for that reason but… yeah… too many minor issues that just gnawed at me.

Also, with LaBella short scale strings, I had to put a spacer on the E string behind the bridge to keep the silk behind the saddle (I'm also using a different bridge but the same trick would work with the stock bridge). If your daughter finds a small bass easier to manage and it inspires her to play more, then it's a great option. Assuming you're also a bass player, she surely will have something full scale to pick up any time she's curious about it. I'm a fan of being exposed to different instruments from early on, because it can make one less sensitive to needing a specific instrume t or setup as one develops. My first bass in elementary school was a truly crappy thing, but it was $35 new and I could afford it. Short scale, narrow neck with a necessarily high action because it wasn't just bowed, it had a deep dip in the fingerboard from about the 7th to 11th frets followed by a raised section. Then in high school I built a short-necked bass around a cheap donor neck. Later I bought a Lancer fretless, my first full-scale, and played that a lot. In eleventh grade I also acquired a brand new West German upright veneer bass. One day in college some people had organized a jam the lunchroom, inviting others who played instruments to sit in for a few tunes. I was handed someone's bass and joined in, but soon he had to go, so I was handed a very different instrument and just carried on. The owner of that second bass asked how I could just pick up two such different instruments, quickly get my tone and play without breaking stride. Whatever ability I may have to do that, I put it down to all that previous experience with such a weird array of basses with nothing in common but the tuning.
