when you look at something like that you'd never think it is all electric and it has a huge extension cord. its unwinding as it goes across the road.

Has anyone ever heard from the exec's at the mine as to why it was cut up and not made a museum? Or as I suspect, have they all quit and are no longer available for questioning. Some underhanded shit went down I'll bet.

They had to make their last million a piece on the scrap money they got for cutting it up. That's why it didn't go to a museum. But the money it would take to move this to a museum would be crazy. Taking it apart, trucking it, and putting it back together would be quite the expensive undertaking.

They found that the turn table thing was broken anyway I think?
@BlackPill-pu4vi

The turntable broke when it was only a quarter mile from its destination. Allegedly it was too risky to move it any further. Sadly, America is so deindustralized that neither the mine nor the preservation group could get replacement parts anyway. Very high probability that the scrap was sent to China. There is a far greater loss in losing the Silver Spade. People don't grasp that the industrial matrix, the capital investment, and the expertise that went into building the Spade can never be recovered. We couldn't build another power shovel like this (or mega dragline) if our lives depended on it. THAT right there was why it should've been saved at all costs for posterity. Same for other unique one-of-a-kind machines like the Captain and Big Muskie.

I heard that once these were out of commission that “like Big Muskie” they got scrapped because the EPA busted their balls over leaving equipment just sitting along with not finishing the reclamation it was on.

This is true, but it holds, and moves over 100 cu yards of dirt and/or rocks, as far as 300 feet, in one bucket full. It can load and dump it that 300 feet away, in less than 2 minutes. I believe that is over 400,000 pounds.

Just the roof of the house dwarfs the steel electrical transmission line poles, on the left. Higher than a 5 story building, I believe. It would have to take a lot of patience to drive it. This was, probably at top speed.
