CNC Router Woodworking - This Pisses Me Off!!!
Ойын-сауық
CNC router woodworking is an amazing craft for anyone to take up, regardless of what they do. I have seen many craftsmen and woodworkers take it up because their hands were hurting too bad from arthritis or lugging around large lumber from the mill.
Esp[esially for those who are going into retirement and looking for something new to do that is creative. This CNC technology, routers, lasers, plasma, 3d printing are all crafty ways to build a skill. And each one has its own skill to embrace.
This is not to degrade anyone with exceptional skills. It is to call out those who think they are too good to support someone who does not have a master skill but needs to express their own creativity. Encourage, validate, and celebrate!

I was in the Marines for 6 years. While a young PFC at Camp Pendleton I was ordered to the color guard for about 2 months. If you are on a Marine color guard, then yes, there are very specific rules about how to handle a flag. If you're making a piece of art like this, we all know where your heart and mind are. It's a very cool piece that evokes patriotism in a unique way. BTW- The view is from behind. So the girl in the carve is displaying the flag correctly. Some people are just wankers.

The more and more I watch you, I get more and more impressed. Those are very good points on how people wake up and choose violence for the day, it must be miserable, I just Block them. I seen something similar where a creator in a shop was using his phone as his monitor on self mode, when you do that the image is inverted. And people missed the whole video just to get on him about his flag looked to be hung wrong in the background. Some called him everything but a woodworker. Your teaching style works for me, the way you engage just clicks with my brain and I have learned more real world skills in this, from you than any other. The first machine I ever seen I ran for superflow. I was one of three in the cabinet shop in 2000 ish and we got a 4x8 shopsabre with vacuum and it blew me away, at that time I was just getting a home computer, so it was so cool to have the job of running it. I always wanted my own machine and been a kitchen carpenter for 30 years I knew my way around a shop, but they were unreachable. I had a career ending injury 18 months ago and said hell with it and bought one, used recovery time to learn it and I feel that stupid machine saved my ass from self destructive loathing. I came across your videos while in the hospital and I truly was inspired to get that machine as soon as i could. Thanks, for the you tube university education...really thanks.
I look at it this way, if you are creating or fixing something, you get a thumbs up to me. I've seen some horribly items made but still gave a thumbs up, because they are making an attempt to do something or make something. We need to get back to encouraging people to work with their hands. Things will always need to be made by people.

Garrett, I'm the guy who told you the story about the sewing! All I can say is this vid ROCKS! I've found that almost in every case the Nay Sayers are the ones with the least amount of talent, ability, or personal DRIVE to even try to achieve something. I always ask them if I can see some of their work in this field of endeavor...never hear from them again! I equate them to movie critics. When was the last time you saw a movie made by a movie critic. I'll get off my soap box now. Keep the vids coming.

Greg, right on brother. Thanks for letting me use that story because it couldn't be more accurate.
Some people seem to find it impossible not to criticize others work, and some people just cannot give someone any praise or admiration without quantifying it and it pisses me off as well. Back in the 80's, when I was in college, I had a friend that was an art student and could draw pictures that looked like a photograph, I was also into art but did not commit as much of my time to it as he did. I finished a drawing that I was very pleased with and showed it to my friend and returned with a backhanded compliment, "Not bad for catalogue work," he could have simply said nice job, he did it all the time. Love your channel!

I live in Michigan and I don’t have a heating shop, so it’s been several months since I CNCed. Yesterday I came out fiddled with getting the shop set up and decided a sign was needed, I turned on the CNC opened VCarve Pro, and realized I had forgotten how to make a sign. I just brought up a IDC UTube video and in a couple of minutes I was off and running. Thanks Garrett for all you do.

Steve, right on brother! Happy to hear you are back in the shop figuring out things again.
Hey Garrett, speaking from a former Marine perspective your carving is perfectly fine in my book. The key which you can ask any former military person is the Stars are at the beginning of the way the wind flows through the flag (i.e. the stars are always starting at the front of your car with the flag flowing to the back). Love the design and people should be more encouraging versus criticizing. Life is too short to be so negative in your life, look at the good in all and embrace ALL our diversity and experience. Love your channel...please keep up the great work!

You are a good guy, man. That was one of the most righteous and proper rants about creativity -- let alone the CNC version of it -- that I've ever heard. I was a woodshop brat in high school, and I'm an amateur musician (bass player). My biggest project was to build a bass in woodshop, like back in 1981. I didn't finish it, but I came *really* close. Having just the knowledge that I was taught by my superb woodshop instructor, I *almost* succeeded in building an instrument I've been playing now for over 40 years. Everything you say in that video is spot-on, and also has an analogy in music. I've become pretty okay as a bassist, but I'm not a professional and probably lack certain skills required to be one (for example, having memorized a ton of jazz standards, or being a better sight-reader). And I totally GET when I'm seeing/hearing someone with those skills! I'm not so dumb that I don't recognize a Master. So, like you we're saying about master wood-workers: "I don't need to be told that I'm not at your level, or that I did something wrong, or screwed something up." I'm very well aware of that, because something inspired me, way back when, to learn how to play the instrument, even if I haven't risen to a certain level, and it was those same Masters! A CNC machine is an instrument. It's a device we use to express our creativity. I myself may not be the most accomplished, and I always welcome constructive criticism. But you're so right. Some people seem to exist mainly to tear other people down, to tell them that they messed up, that they *suck* at this, and so on. What a bleak life that must be! Patrolling Facebook to critique someone else's carve? (And by the way, I totally don't get the criticism of your beautiful carve. To me, I was like: Well, if he just flips it 90 degrees to the left, from my perspective, everything is right and proper. Stars and Bars are in the right place, etc. I would not have dreamed of that criticism in a million years!) Also, incidentally, your "Luthier's Bit Set" is pretty darned inspired, and I will be purchasing one soon! You totally got to the essence of what's required to carve those thick bodies!

Thank You Garrett for making this video. Our church was celebrating 50 years of getting a new roof, I decided to engrave on my CNC machine some of the old roof tiles which I salvaged. I had the name of the church correct but was told that the cross I engraved was wrong. The church is in Scotland and we have many different interpretations of the cross. According to the so called expert the cross was wrong but in my eyes it was correct. Until I saw your video I was going to throw them all in the skip, now they are going to be handed in on the day of the anniversary . Thank you again for giving the confidence to go ahead . please stay safe. Bill M8-) Scotland

BillMartin, that is one heck of a story my friend. That sounds like an amazing project. I am excited for you to show your church what you made!
Here, here, Garrett!! You hit the nail squarely on the head. There are a whole range of people who can only get validated by being overly critical of everyone else and what they achieve. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Union location on your carve. . .all the "rules" say is how the flag is to be constructed, nothing more. You are correct in the view that if we viewed the carve from the "front", the union would be on the "correct " side. All of this is unadulterated horse dung. It is a great carve. And if it is to be a gift, for example, the recipient will be thrilled. I am so totally sick and tired of these sideline critics. i have experienced it with other things and while there always exists a "better" way to do something, most times, people won't do jack but will critique those who do. CNCing is nothing more than another technique in a woodworker's toolbar to get realization of an idea that currently may only exist in his/her mind. Just like the new generation of lasers are providing craftspeople with the new found ability to fine detail engrave and create. So, this is a video a long time in coming and I applaud you on it! You, sir, speak for many of us. thank you.

The general public, and even many craftsmen, do not understand CNC, 3D printers, etc. So many people think it is "just push a button" but have no idea what feeds and speeds would be needed for cutting plywood versus maple, or temperatures and speeds for extruding PLA versus PETG. Work holding, bed adhesion, and post-processing are critically important. There is an art to running these machines. You are very clearly about teaching people that art.

You're absolutely right! I have been woodworking for 13 years. I have hand carved pieces with a chisels and been told by other people that I CNCed them when I didn't. In my experience the people that care about whether you carved it by hand, aren't willing to pay the price for things that are carved by hand and aren't willing to believe you did it anyways. Some people need to be contrary and wrong. I am new to CNCing. I see it as a useful tool to expand on my abilities as a wood worker and I am really enjoying learning about all of the technical things such as a down cutting bit not having fuzzies on the top surface and to not use them to bore holes unless I want to start a fire. I love all of this new knowledge. I appreciate every bit of what you are doing. Thank you.

"THANK YOU!!!" What you are talking about touches on so many fields. I have been in the IT field for over 20 years and have come across so many people who have this attitude that they are better than everyone else and will trash anyone they feel doesn't meet their level of skill. Many don't give new developers, devops, testers, or anyone else a chance. I try to encourage others in things I am skilled at. I don't give advice unless you ask, just like you mentioned, with the exception of when I am training someone, and even then I would never act like an a-hole and constantly berate them. When I watch a video I always look to see what or how I can do something better than I can right now, and there are a lot of areas where that helps me.

First off, thank you for your videos, they have been an enormous amount of help getting me started in CNC. I have been wood working for 30 years, and now have a second career as an IT person, so for me this was a perfect juxtaposition of two of my favorite things. That being said, it has still been a steep but very enjoyable learning curve. A CNC is just another tool, but one that gives you great precision and repeatability. I just don't understand people, most of whom would have no idea how to do this, who seem to think that they have been appointed the official deciders of what is "actual woodworking". All hobbies seem to have these self-appointed critics for some reason. I say embrace those who support you and just scroll on by and ignore the people want to tear you down.

Garrett, I am a Retired Brigadier General after 35 years of service in the Army National Guard. I just wanted to say that the product you produced is beautiful and is also correct. In my opinion the designer of the file you purchased designed it the correct way. The A-hole that was complaining needs to google "us flag rules and etiquette" again and study them. Some of the simple rules that he does not understand are. 1. The first thing you need to do is determine which direction the flag is facing. It this case my opinion would be that the flag is facing the same direction that she is . The rule is that the flag is facing the direction from which it is most viewed. Anytime you hang a flag under a mail box it is going to appear to be correct or incorrect based on direction the viewer is traveling. 2. If you are hanging a flag on a room wall in a building it is simple to determine that it is most viewed from the interior of the room. Once that is decided the rule states that it should be hung so that if you turned it clockwise the union would be on top. That would mean that the union should be on your left and if you turned it clockwise it would be on top. If the union was on your right and you turned it clockwise it would be a Distress Signal. In this case, my opinion is, that if he had walked around her and viewed her from the front he would had realized that you and the designer were right and he was wrong. I totally agree with your suggestion. Just block those kind of folks and keep on going.

Billy, very true my friend. I couldn't agree more.
I loved this topic! So many people think it takes no skill to create a project on a CNC and they dismiss work produced on them as being of lesser quality. Such BS! I’ve been a woodworker all my life and can make just about anything out of wood. I was excited to get into CNC though because it’s a better way to produce beautiful things that would otherwise take too long to be commercially viable. I’m able to carve wood by hand, but it takes a lot of time to do it well. With 3D modeling software or purchased models I can produce intricate designs with precision as many times as I want. This doesn’t diminish their beauty, quality or intrinsic value. I’m still learning everything I need to be “good” at CNC, and anyone who thinks it’s just, “push a button” and requires no skill doesn’t know shit about it. Creating 3D models is not easy, even with great tools like Aspire. There is a shit-ton of knowledge, skill and artistry required to be capable of producing a beautiful model like the one you purchased. The skill, knowledge and artistry definitely don’t end there though. Understanding the CNC tool, material, cutters, tool paths, feed and speed, machine setup, and proper machine calibration MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE in whether you produce a beautiful product (like yours) or a piece of firewood. Saying CNC isn’t true woodworking is stupid and short sighted. It requires more skills and knowledge to pull it off successfully than to make it 100% by hand. CNC software and hardware are tools, just like paint brushes. Anyone can paint a picture, but I n the hands of a master those brushes produce something special and unique. Thanks for doing the videos and helping the community to up their game. Sharing your knowledge is helping us all to to be a better woodworkers.

I love that you've kept the absolute beginner in mind with your videos. I've had my CNC since the new year and have enjoyed watching countless hours of videos and tutorials. Being retired, I love a new challenge and have put the 9 to 5 mindset IN a box and threw it out. You've inspired me to put in the time to learn and attempt projects with the CNC. Software learning curve is steep but doable. I'm from the old school and we used to say, "If I want your opinion, I'll beat it out of you" Keep up the great work!

DLL, congrats on your new CNC. I am happy to hear that my videos have inspired you to jump into CNC and find something that helped you get out of the 9 to 5 mindset!
This is a great example of project perspective, encouraging perspectives and as well as openness to change. One of the most fun part of CNC is the chance or iterative design process. Being too pleased with your current situation might have you miss a chance to grow. You stated that you don’t want to follow rules, which is good and allows you to change and grow. Further more you set rules at the end of you video that said everyone should follow. They are very good suggestion and everyone should be open to hearing them as suggestions. zero tolerance is a rule. The Flag is a place of passion I ask you politely to know that it has been a symbol to some of us as the the freedom to have our freedom. When the last thing you see of your buddy was that symbol in an effort protect our freedom. In closing I think your flag was correctly displayed. Garett you inspire me with your passion and willingness to share and teach others. You make me want to be open to learn new perspectives. Semper Fi, Dave

Been on a CNC for a year now and never looked back. It is an amazing journey and Garrett's videos helped so much. I happened to snap a pic with the phone and carve it the next day. Take a fun day with friends and transfer the memory to CNC.

Thank you sir! I am, at ground zero of learning to CNC. I mean REALLY at ground zero! I am going to learn CNC first by building my 'own' custom CNC machine; my hopes are that I will more intimately learn by building my own vs. buying a ready-made CNC machine. So, my hat off to you! I am 62 and know absolutely nothing about CAD/CAM software or CNC'ing but I do have a basic understanding about the X,Y,Z thinking that goes into this art. Before I run on any further, I'll just say thank for your straight forward no bullshit zero tolerance way of doing things.

Hey Garrett, It's a shame that people have to be a problem to others, there is a saying, " There's nought stranger than folk " Animals are predictable, People are not. Unfortunately, there will always be the ones that are never satisfied and will always look to spoil the party for the ones that are happy and content with what they have achieved regardless of how good or bad it may be. Possibly the ones that made the comments are skilled in some way or other, but most likely not CNC work. The creation of a project takes time and skill, your knowledge has to span different areas, Woodwork, Software, Editing, Woodworking tools other than a CNC machine and a few more too. For the people that are new to all of these areas or most of them, it is a big achievement for them to start and complete a project that they probably never dreamed that would be able to do. Congratulations to everyone that achieves their goals. To do something that you don't really have a clue about and actually have success with it, is a huge achievement for many, Well done. Garrett is online, giving his all to help others, regardless of skill level, yes he has a business in CNC, and businesses need to make money, so for sure somethings cost money, but many times Garrett gives his time and advice for free and doesn't complain or tell you that you made mistakes in a negative way. He may have constructive comments, and that is to help you to show you the errors and then to show you how to correct the errors to help prevent them in the future. We all make mistakes, " Tough " It happens, and for the ones that are willing to learn from and by those mistakes, Good on them. Garret, Keep up the good work mate, what you are doing is great for the CNC community, Beginner, Intermediate, or Professional, we all can learn something from you. Even the most professional person does not know everything and will be challenged by something new and will still learn even at their level. We never really stop learning. Good on you mate. Since I’m Italian, I would just quote the Divine Comedy and say the Dante’s way:” Non ti curar di loro ma guarda e passa” . That is a very poetic and smooth way to say “don’t care about them and move on” 😉 There are jealous people all over the world, maybe envious of other people’s success (even the smallest one…) You’re doing a great job with many of us, don’t waste your time on guys who don’t deserve it. Keep it up 💪 Greetings from Rome 🇮🇹 BTW, I’m not an expert of the U.S. flag, but as far as I know the Union is on the correct side (she’s just keeping the flag vertically along her back, holding the left uppermost side of it with her right hand…am I wrong? 🙂)

Hi Garrett, You're most welcome. It's really good to see there are many people that got behind you on this unfortunate incident to give you some moral support and to show you that not everyone is tarred with the same brush. Now, it's water under the bridge, and time to move on and continue doing what you do best. The Lady and the American flag actually looked really good, I would have been very happy if I had done that on my CNC machine. Talking of doing a 3D on my machine, I sent you a message regarding the open book 3D carve that you did a short while ago, hopefully, you can find a few minutes to have a look for me. You are right on. Love the rant. I am a retired IT professional with a lot of woodworking experience (furniture, cabinets, church fixtures). I've done it all as a hobby and helping others. The natural progression for me was CNC. I've watched most of your videos and bought products from you. I bought a Longmill II 30x48 based on a lot of what you said and after researching Sienci Labs (a great company). So, why did I give you all this background? I've been on this planet longer than you and have encountered many of those negative "experts". I find that most of the time they have no idea what they are talking about and have never accomplished anything worthwhile. Some clown with a keyboard living in his mother's basement is not worth your time to engage them. Keep on doing what you are doing. Those of us that appreciate talent and class will continue to excel, while the naysayers continue to be miserable.👍
