CNC Machining & Moulding An Oak Plaque - While She Sleeps Album Art

In February 2021 I reimagined the While She Sleeps artwork from the album Sleeps Society by designing and machining an oak version of the banner featured on the cover. I decided to gift this piece to the band, which lead to me machining a very limited run of two sizes for the band to sell at the album launch pop-up event they held.
In 2022, a special edition version was in the works and the band landed on the idea of painting one of the plaques black, photographing it and using it as the album art. This led to me engraving the full track listing into a large piece of polyurethane model board which was also painted black, photographed and used as the reverse cover.
Further down the line, the idea was sparked to create black versions of the plaque available for fans to own. Due to the lengthy machining times, machining oak versions wasn’t justifiable so we had the idea of moulding a version of the plaque and casting them from polyurethane. The importance to me with this project was to make a replica of the one featured on the artwork, not something similar. With that in mind, the master had to be an oak plaque rather than one machined from plastic or model board to ensure the wood grain and textures were present.

    I mean maybe I’m just echoing everyone else here, but thank you for sharing the story of this build. From start to finish I’m impressed with the quality and craftsmanship. You’ve reminded me that, no matter what, go slow. Speed never pays off when you’re looking for a photo-ready piece. Came here also from your new phone charging stand. That one earned my subscription, and I’m looking forward to learning more from you, as a developing industrial designer myself. Thanks again!

    Hey I just discovered your channel last week and wanted to say I'm mad impressed at everything you do. My whole DIY hobby started from a blown speaker in my '99 S10 and that eventually led me down DIY car audio (fiberglass kick panels, sub boxes, etc) and eventually into 3D printing/CNC. The fact you're doing all of this at the quality you are, AND filming/editing it as you go is very impressive. Keep up the great work.

  • @kymlaroux1378

    @kymlaroux1378

    Жыл бұрын

    Many resins have a pot life too short to vacuum. When you are casting a few hundred items, a few minutes more cute time can equal another days work time. If you’re making your molds right and pouring correctly you generally won’t see a difference between vacuuming and not. Though every mold is different and calls for different techniques. That’s the fun and the heartbreak of fabricating. lol

It’s difficult to film some of the work I do as it extends the length of the job quite a lot with setting up lighting, new angles etc. I am working towards streamlining my setup with fixed lighting for different work areas so there’s less setup between shots. That, among other things, will definitely speed up the process and give me more opportunity to film more projects. Thanks for watching!

Now I have the mould and the shell making another mould once this burns out will take quite literally half a day to a full day. I can put the master back in one side of the silicone and put that into the shell then just pour silicone into the side that I left out. Once that’s cured, removed the old silicone side and pour into that side, so the work with the shell and everything does pay off in the long run! Thanks for watching!
