CNC Fire extinguished by Firetrace Fire Suppression System
Фильм және анимация
In January 2018 Firetrace installed an Automatic Fire Suppression System to a CNC machine for protection whilst unattended however, only two months later Firetrace were contacted stating a staff member had witnessed the Fire Suppression System deploy and machine shutdown. With an engineer attending within a couple of days it was apparent there was a fire in the machinery. This was also shown as the CCTV camera captured the event showing the fire was extinguished within 5 seconds. Watch what happened here!

I witnessed familiar incidents maybe 25 Times and the automatic fire extinguisher did always a good job.
Fire suppression systems have really come a long way in recent years.
This usually happens when machining Titanium and using straight oil as coolant. Happened to me once, not pretty.

So.. what do we use instead of oil?

Soluble oil. The one you mix with water.

Yeah I was curious because only a handful of machined metals are pyrophoric.
Great demonstration. I’m going to keep this in mind
I've never heard of this on a machine before... but very interesting.
1.08 - The ventilation tube melts from fire. It definitely has to be made from steel.

I would say more from the pressure shock inside the cabinet - have a look how the top of the cabinet also moves - indicating what appears to be a sudden increase in internal pressuriaation of the cabinet area also.

Better to melt it down than cause fire in the whole dust extractor system.
Good to have especially when machining zirconium or titanium!
Quality system guys, well done.
We use the same light poles. The white top light flashes when we have errors. Its weird to see them in another setting.

Why weird? Signal Towers are deployed on machinery of all kinds all around the world.
That's how fast fire suppression should be
Excellent, this is what a good setup looks like!
this also happen when you dont service the machines properly the smell is just awful
This lathe quickly became an easy bake oven
Usually happens with CNC grinders.
Amazing technology
the ducting quickly made an exit
great tech folks!
what if the suction sucks fire into the filter and the filter catches fire?
@ge200099

I guess the co2 will get sucked in the filter too

@@bretatvs That almost happened when CNCing some plywood. I guess they had the rpm a little too high it ended up burning the wood.

Part of the detection system will shut the machine down I guess including extraction. So the extraction doesn't create a back-draft further increasing the fire intensity?
Cosmolene is rough.
Those look like Fanuc or Fadal screw machines
keep safe
I seen this walking out the door on EDM machines. I it wasn't for the fire suppression. The whole building would have burned down during lights out.
Ohh the smoke is not from fire to fire extinguisher 😂
I want to know just how the fire started

Fuel (Material) + Friction = Heat = Fire Alternatively - Fuel (Gas - Vapours) + Ignition Source (Spark) = Fire
how do you control the amount of co2 released and even prevent excessive release of the co2 after the fire is extinguished
@wesleyhurd3574

The extinguisher should be sized so that it holds just slightly more CO2 than what is required to completely fill the inside of the machine. Most automatic CO2 extinguishers will dispense their entire contents once activated. In a very large room like the one in the video, the amount of CO2 dispensed would not pose any health hazard.

Hello, thanks for your comment, indeed as mentioned by Wesley, our design is as per the NOAEL. Hope this helps! Please feel free to contact us if you require any further info. www.firetrace.co.uk
What about an oil/electric fire???? How are you shutting down the electrical?
@andreaudio

CO2 fire extinguisher is electric safe.
@kyleteal5888

@@andreaudio I understand that its safe for electronics. But so it doesn't auto reignite how the electrical system shut off? Also here is this for a note. To achieve the Class “C” rating the extinguisher and contents must pass certain electrical conductivity measurements in accordance with UL711 and UL299.

@@kyleteal5888 that I can’t say for sure... but the logical assumption is that the fire suppression system also cut the power to the machine. But, once again, I’m just speculating...
@Amonomen

The typical implementation of a fire suppression system such as this will open a contactor that is feeding the entire machine. Upon activation, all power is cut to the machine.

Hello, thank you for your comment. We incorporate a pressure switch which is wired to the E-stop of the machine to shutdown the power to prevent reignition. Hope this helps. www.firetrace.co.uk/options/pressure-switches

I don’t work anywhere that has cameras “keeping an eye” on employees to make sure they don’t slack I assume. It’s insulting, and is a good indicator that their turn around rate is relatively high, in comparison to many companies
Pay attention to your parts and your tooling. I run screw machines for a living. That's the result of a burned Up tool........

Halon is really bad stuff. Terrible for the environment and if you happen to be in an enclosed environment like a server room or aircraft, it will kill you. Binds to oxygen so strongly you will suffocate if you cant escape the area.
