CNC Fire extinguished by Firetrace Fire Suppression System

Фильм және анимация

In January 2018 Firetrace installed an Automatic Fire Suppression System to a CNC machine for protection whilst unattended however, only two months later Firetrace were contacted stating a staff member had witnessed the Fire Suppression System deploy and machine shutdown. With an engineer attending within a couple of days it was apparent there was a fire in the machinery. This was also shown as the CCTV camera captured the event showing the fire was extinguished within 5 seconds. Watch what happened here!

This usually happens when machining Titanium and using straight oil as coolant. Happened to me once, not pretty.

I would say more from the pressure shock inside the cabinet - have a look how the top of the cabinet also moves - indicating what appears to be a sudden increase in internal pressuriaation of the cabinet area also.

how do you control the amount of co2 released and even prevent excessive release of the co2 after the fire is extinguished

  • @wesleyhurd3574

The extinguisher should be sized so that it holds just slightly more CO2 than what is required to completely fill the inside of the machine. Most automatic CO2 extinguishers will dispense their entire contents once activated. In a very large room like the one in the video, the amount of CO2 dispensed would not pose any health hazard.

The typical implementation of a fire suppression system such as this will open a contactor that is feeding the entire machine. Upon activation, all power is cut to the machine.
