I was once a CNC machinist and every day in my wood shop I’m thinking “If I had a CNC mill I could do this and that”. Earlier today I watched a video on how to cut dovetails on a router table with an INCRA system. I was thinking “that’s a lot of work to cut a dovetail”. You have the answer! I am buying a CNC router to cut my dovetails from here out. Genius John!! I bet I can buy or build a CNC router for the price of an INCRA system.

This entire setup is absolutely brilliant, John! Thank you very much for sharing it with us! You made fantastic use of the otherwise unusable space behind the gantry, and it's pure genius on your part. I can't wait for the next installment. I too have one of Dave's Shoestring Budget CNC machines, so I'm eager to see how you compare and contrast the two. Please keep these coming!

Hi John. I noticed something while watching your excellent videos. JointCAM is programmed to always cut from right to left, which is a climb cut, which minimizes tearout and prevents the bit from "grabbing" the wood. In your videos, the machine is cutting from left to right, with a conventional cut. I believe that the reason for this, is that you have at least one axis of your machine setup backwards. If you watch any of the other JointCAM videos on KZread, you'll see that they are all cutting from right to left. Feel free to email me if you have any questions, Gerry

Gerry, thanks for the review and comments. I set the axis that way purposely as the router is on both sides of my gantry. The dovetail fixture is on the back side. The demo used poplar for cutting and did not experience any tear out. However, I am reviewing my practice to see if I should change anything. Again, thanks. BTW - how is your progress coming on adding the mortise feature?

I'm making good, but slow progress. I'm almost finished with the tenon toolpaths. The mortise toolpaths will be much simpler. I'm working on it every chance I get, but there just aren't enough hours in the day...
