Update: I printed some more of the split brush holders without a skirt - they printed fine, with no cleanup required! I also tested it with half as many magnets and it seems plenty strong enough.

. @CorbinDunn You've inspired me to rework my dust shoe approach. I've got a CNCDepot ATC and created this overly elaborate pneumatic dust shroud lifting solution that, honestly, stresses me out every time it's triggered. Your solution is like a face palm... of course... moment for me.

@@portlandscott Cool! If you have an S30C, they run hot -- try printing it out of PLA+ at a minimum, or ideally ASA or ABS to have better heat resistance.

This looks amazing! I’d like to see a feature to add in a polycarb window to watch the cut. Another need is a port to mount a compressed air brass tube that aims at the cut. I’d love to see an incorporated inset for a led ring light too

Yeah, those are great ideas! I experimented with some clear dust bristles and windows..I just couldn't get them to work right. I did run an extra air line to my spindle -- someday I might set it up. I used air exclusively on my Tormach PCNC, but on the Avid I've been pretty happy with the dust collection.

Just wanted to say I printed the entire boot and I LOVE IT! Fantastic job on the design

Hi Corbin, great work as usual. The one main suggestion I would make it to alter the design so that it attaches to the fixed gantry and not the spine;le. Make it height adjustable so that before each job you set the height to whatever material you are cutting and the hood will sit flush with the top of the material always during the job rather than going up and down with the height changes of the spindle. This has improved my dust collection greatly. I did mine so that there's an upper and lower frame with about a 2" plexiglass in the middle so you can see what the tool is doing during the job. the bottom frame has brushes but they are very short, less than 1 inch, because they don't need to be any longer when the shoe is always flush with the material. Also, anything you can do in the F360 design to move the mouth of the dust suction as close as possible to the tool / cut. This has a big impact on getting the dust into the chute. Of course, my first suggestion would blow up your design and process for doing automatic tool changes, you would have to make considerable changes on that I realize! all the best p.s. I would offer to share my files and design but I can't really because it's a total hack job and not fit for human consumption. it's just duct tape and bubble gum to get the job done until I have time to make a proper F360 parametric model for printing. Sorry!

Cool, thanks for the ideas! I do like the long brushes because I tend to do deep carves; I actually have to remove the 100mm brush to avoid collisions! It is somewhat adjustable -- I can move it up and down about 0.5", which is generally enough for what I do, along with the ability to use a different brush length. I'll definitely take your ideas into consideration the next time I mess around with the design!

Well done Corbin! Looks like a great design. I will think about printing it - my current dust shoe actually works well - it was one built by Kents CNC. I don't have an ATC - so maybe it wouldn't work well with an ATC. With that said a couple features that your dust shoe incorporates I think could be very helpful for me: 1) the ability to remove half the shoe while carving should allow me to get videos for my KZread Channel of carving/cutting with more dust collection than I currently have. I often pull my dust shoe off to get camera shots which then doesn't provide any real dust collection. 2) the ease of pulling your hose off for clean up. I have attached a Rockler dust right attachment to my current dust shoe to allow me to do this and it is a bit bulky - looks like your setup will be more convenient. Thank you for sharing your ideas and your files. Just downloaded the files - thank you. I didn't see a Fusion 360 file only .stl files. Did I miss something? Thought you said you were providing the F360 Parametric file. Couldn't find a contact point on your website or I would have asked this on your website. Thank you again.

Thanks Rob! The Fusion 360 file should be at the top level in the zip, called "Avid - ATC CNC Dust Shoe V2 v69.f3d" -- Let me know if you see it...otherwise I messed something up! And yeah - the split design is also so I can do some video shots while using my CNC. I'm already thinking about updates: My version 3 will make the dust port easier to grab; I'd like some sort of handle on it.

@@CorbinDunn I just relooked and the file is in the Zip file. I think I got focused on the two folders that were also part of the zip file - though the Avid - ATC CNC...file as the left over Zipfile. My bad but after pointing this out I looked more closely. I am not well versed in Fusion. Started to get there during covid but then switched back to Sketchup, which I was more familiar with, when I stopped designing as many 3D Printer files. Now when I try to use Fusion it is like trying to start all over - but think I need to get back into it after watching what you do. I am really glad I found your channel.

@@RobSandstromDesigns Cool - glad the file is there! Fusion is great with the timeline feature; you can scroll back and step through the file to see how I did everything. I was a big SketchUp user for a long time, but now I really like Fusion; some things are slower with it...but you can get more precision.

That thing is slick. The removable vacuum hose is a cool concept. And yeah: Definitely seems like too much magnet strength, especially if you ever wanna get sketchy and try to remove one side of the skirt when the machine is in use.

Yeah! Luckily I can re-print the smaller bottom pieces and glue in less magnets and see how it performs. I was going to do another one for a different brush size, so I'll do some testing.

i love this design another option of a dust boot for the atc is something like to shopsaber one where it docks the dust shoe before loading the bits. might be something you can incorporate into this

Yeah! I have thought about going the docking route; it takes a slight bit more time for each tool change, and I'd have to code it in (Avid CNC / Mach 4).

Hi Markus - that is a good idea! I've done a few Fusion 360 videos; in general, they aren't as popular as the general build videos. Definitely download the Fusion 360 file and walk through the timeline -- that can give you a really good idea on how I built it up. This is version 2, and I effectively redid the entire design from scratch, so it should be pretty easy to follow and see each of the operations I did when you step through it. If you don't know how to step through it, let me know..I'll write up some directions.

All my videos after this one will have it running - you can see it there! I also pop it on/off mid run in several videos (some I'm not quite done editing yet). I kind figured it would be boring to watch it run...as there isn't much to see, but I should have included it.

Yes - the Fusion 360 file is parametric, so you just set it to whatever spindle size you want. I wrote directions in the download on how to do it. If you have trouble figuring it out, send me an email and I can export an STL with that size. Thanks!

You shouldn't have to login -- that should work (if you created an account), but it isn't necessary. Add to Cart takes you to the cart page and you can checkout (it's all free -- it just lets me track downloads). I just checked it and it seems to be working. Maybe try a different browser? Other than that, maybe it is an intermittent problem with my site; I don't pay for the best hosting...

First off let me apologize for being a FNG but I downloaded the 3d files and printed the dust shoe first and I was going to print the spindle portion and I previously had a 80mm spindle on my old machine and this new machine has a 62mm one. I have Fusion 360 but for the life of me have no idea how to resize the spindle portion to my 62mm spindle size. Help please?????

It looks very pretty and I printed it with petg-cf just one problem. I do not have any holes for the magnets on either side for the dust port or brush hoods.

McMaster Car sells a brush that does not use all the white cloth to hold it together (7900T2 Easy-Cut Strip Brush 7/32" Wide X 3/16" High Backing, 3" Overall Height, 5 ft. Length). This is useful with a dust boot that uses short cutting bits. If you use a router, almost all routers have a fan that pulls air in from the top and out the bottom for cooling. This will cause problems with a vacuum trying to suck up the dust and most of the dust will be pushed out of the brush cavity. So when designing your boot, make sure you funnel (divert) that air out in your design before it hits the boot cavity. Do not block the air flow as your router will over heat. You can design this in your 3d print. Also you want to have a brush (skirt) that snaps on and off (use the magnets) as you will need to print different skirts that use different length brushes depending on the length of you cutting bit.

Awesome! I need to look into McMaster Carr's brush; I haven't been super happy with most the amazon ones I have been using. So far, I haven't had issues with the spindle's cooling air fan causing any issues.
