CNA | Don't Call Us Beaten | E03: Troubles In The Classroom

FROM THE ARCHIVE: This series first aired on TV in 2015.
Year 1 student Joash Lim is diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). He's impulsive, temperamental and attention-seeking, and he finds it hard to make friends in school. In this episode, we look at how his teachers at NorthLight deal with the problem.
About the show: In a system where academic success matters, what happens if you fail your Primary School Leaving Examinations? “Don’t Call Us Beaten” captures life in two schools that offer these kids a second chance. Over one term, we chart their struggles and triumphs with teachers who won’t be beaten by failure.

If only they did this in the mainstream secondary schools, especially the more prestigious ones. Overlooking the mental welfare of students, they tend to focus on grades. I wish I had kinder teachers like those here.

Nah. Public schools are for everyone, not just the suck. Different dynamics are at play. What's the point of holding back the majority just to pity fap the few stragglers? Better to focus on maintaining majority success there and send the suck to suck school like these.

Throughout the whole episode, I’ve been feeling pretty emotional, especially at the parts where other kids kept poking fun at Joash. It hurts when no one make an effort to befriends him just because he’s different. They might not like him because of his outbursts and at times he may come off as rude and unfriendly, but they shouldn’t have joined in with the bullying and laugh and make fun of him. I actually cried at the end of the episode when Joash was talking to Yu De and was like asking him to wait for him so they can walk to the MRT together. Like all he wants is just some friends who is accepting of him. It’s just so saddening to see kids being so mean, sometimes I wonder if their parents even care enough to discipline their kids.

Yu De is a really nice guy to work with. Very approachable guy, I'm not from Northlight but I was in the same team as him when we both volunteered as National Day Parade ushers a few years back. It didn't struck me that he was from Northlight at all, until I watched this today... Hardworking person, and if I'm not wrong he should've just ORDed from his NS a year or two back. Hopefully he is doing well.

I like how northlight teachers and principal figure out ways to deter bullying. Funny how normal school suffer in that aspect as its mostly overshadowed. I was once bullied like joeash, thankfully some teachers did tried to handled and somehow the bullies were OK with me in the end. I feel sorry for kids like Joash who are not naughty because they want to be naughty. They try very hard to mask themselves but sometimes other pupils who themselves are having discipline problems cause them to be irratic. The teachers are so passionate and patient and they play a large part in helping these kids. For Joash , his buddy is God sent. He needs to be loved, so he can heal mentally. I hope all the pupils are doing well .

hyper like this what he need is a sport to unleash all that energy. It'll helps to focus and also teach him to trust. And to the malay kids omg.... simple, call the parents up. I give a big kudos to the teacher because, she really try to teach them, why is it wrong. Make them realize why their action is bad. Make kids thinking is good eh.

Amir and Azaidy should deserve a punishment instead of just scolding. I noticed that in both schools (Northlight & APS) the teachers only scold. And when the students are late they don't give a punishment. I'm P6 this year and in my school, the teachers only give u one chance and the next time u bully, off u go to the discipline master's office. For physical bullying, 1 time is enough for u to be at the discipline master's office and u will have a high chance of getting caned. Verbally will not get u to the discipline master's office but for cyber, u will get caned. I heard that there's a guy that's not in my class, got caned for fighting with some dude. And the other case was that 3 retards was physically bullying a P3 boy. Like bruh... cowards. And the victim is short and skinny af

Lol, for us, if you bully someone, the teachers have more creative punishments methods. The bully has to apologize to the victim in front of the whole school. During assembly. In front of the principal, with everyone's glares on her. (Super humiliating)
