CMV, more common than Zika, but less-known

Cytomegalovirus, or CMV, is the most common non-genetic cause of childhood deafness in the country. CMV can also bring blindness, cognitive delays and microcephaly, and it is vastly more common than the Zika virus, which prompted alarm this summer for its potential to cause birth defects. But, while Congress invested $1.1 billion in fighting Zika, funding for CMV lags behind. A Wheat Ridge mother is trying to raise awareness about CMV, which is an easily spread virus that is present in nearly every elementary school and daycare center in the country.

My first time hearing about CMV was as a nursing student after having had my boys and I was in my 30's. I was doing my pediatric rotation and our instructor came into the conference room and asked us who could no longer have children as she had a child with CMV that she could assign as she explained anyone who could get pregnant it would be bad for them and their baby to get this virus. As I had had a hysterectomy before nursing school, I volunteered. The child was a very sad case, with no abilities other than to breath on their own at somewhere between 8-10. Years later when doing bloodwork to see if they could figure out why my body went to pot all at once, my doctor called me to tell me that I had the CMV in my blood. Turns out I had very severe RA. It has been a long almost 20 years.

My son was born in 2009 congenital CMV I I knew there was something wrong he wasn't growing as fast enough in my womb and they had me on bed rest for 3 weeks and a genetic specialist and they would have just had to give me a simple test for CMV but they did not I did not know until they sent the placenta to pathology and that's how we found out. My son now is an 11 year old perfect boy. Hey is deaf in his left ear and besides that no one would know any difference but we went through many struggles and your struggles will overcome as well they're just developmentally delayed quite a bit until their six or seven.

Good that your son is doing much better now, I'm wondering if he's still developemantally delayed or if he's able to go in a regular class in school and follow the rest of the students or does he gave special education

I am pregnant now and grateful that I know I had CMV in college and now have antibodies! I agree that CMV isn’t talked about as much as it probably should be. I hope that this cute little girl continues to rise above her challenges.

When you are pregnant, you start hearing about all the probability of that or this...you realize that having a perfect normal healthy baby is not that « natural ». Life is hard even at the first moment.

One thing I found out, that not many people know, is if you have a cold sore and have oral sex with your partner, you can spread it, I find it unreal people are so misinformed about the smallest things but will sit on Google for 28 hours looking up the proper way to fold a sheet

as a reborn artist, my work is more of a curiosity than a shopping focus so i use my site to give info. CMV is part of my focus and charity. Newborns should be tested at birth, mothers should be tested every month of pregnancy. i just hope she drops her older daughter out of the conversation because she will carry that guilt.

. She says someone should have told her she wish she would have known?. Dr offices sometimes give pamphlets and information every day but patients don't remember or take heed or even read it. It is up to every PARENT MOTHERS & FATHERS to do your research to use your common sense!! . In this day and age where he can find everything on the Internet there's no excuse to be this ignorant and then say I should have known someone should have told me? Common sense should tell every mother never eat any meat EVER! This is not the mothers fault 'm not saying that.. . But for her to put the blame on others and say I'm angry because someone should have told me is what's really irritating!

I had to brow beat my doctor to test for it. I have had three children no obgyn has ever mentioned it. I was lectured about Zika and lunch meat though. The only reason my child who was born with it was tested was because I already knew I seroconverted during pregnancy, because I was getting myself screened.
