I received my service grade in December. Mine is a beautiful rifle. My stock looks like yours, which I believe is Birch. The difference is my hand guard matches the rest of the stock. All my metal parts are in great shape. These are truly beautiful rifles.

Congrats! Gorgeous rifle! It’ll be a good shooter I’m sure. I have 2 M1s that came through the CMP. One’s a Springfield that was sold as just a stripped receiver and then ended up being worked on by DGR at some point. The other is actually a Winchester M1D sniper model. Got lucky in an auction for that one. It’s a bit beat up and is missing the accessories. Trying to find an original scope and mount for a non ridiculous price

It's a gi replacement birch stock, that's why it's lighter and somewhat splotchy, any rebuild markings etched into the reciever leg? Since you have a springfield 1965 barrel it could be a late rebuild

Definitely a usgi replacement stock and the handguard is very likely original. I'd be willing to bet the stock put on it when it went through one of its many rebuilds. Good wartime production serial number and that stock could be real pretty with a nice strip buff and stain followed by a couple of coats of oil.

They heyday of CMP Garand sales is long past. In 2000, CMP offered a deal where if you came to Camp Perry and fired the Garand Match, they would provide you with a specially prepared M1. If you fired the match with that rifle, you could buy it for $500. If you Bought the rifle, you could buy all the Lake City 30-06 ball you could carry home for 5 cents a round. Needless to say, I did both. I think I bought 5,000 rounds. The Danish Garands and ammunition was another glory moment in CMP history. My most accurate M1 sports a VAR barrel. Then came the Greek era. I did splurge for a couple of the HRA final-manufacture rifles with all brand-new HRA parts and a CMP stock. Those last HRA rifles incorporated the latest and best improvements and changes to the M1 rifles. In those days, CMP had literally tons of M1 and M14 parts for sale. The M14 parts were mostly brand new. The Coast Guard was the last organization to officially retire the M1 from active service. To their eternal discredit, the Coast Guard took thousands and thousands of perfectly functioning M1s and demilitarized them by welding.

You are doing a disservice by telling viewers this is what they can expect when ordering a Service Grade in 2024. This rifle is top tier for 2024. The stock has not been sanded or stripped. It's birch and was likely put on the rifle the same time the new barrel was installed in the 60's. It was never darker than it is now.

Congratulations on your newest rifle. I hit the jackpot with my field grade on my first CMP purchase. The problem is it’s such a great rifle I don’t want to shoot it to the extent I had planned. With that said, I’m about to send in the order form for my second and have been back-and-forth between field grade and service grade. Does the mismatched front wood bother you at all? I don’t consider myself OCD but my wife does! I’m not sure if that would drive me nuts or not. I sent my paperwork for my 2nd one, this time for a field grade, last week. Sent a note along asking for an early number if possible. Last one I ordered was over 10 years ago when the had CMP Special Grades. The mismatched furniture "kinda" makes my OCD tingle but not much cuz I can refinish it. I've done others in the past and I'm telling ya-its worth it! (I separate the steel and wood, scrape, then very carefully sand it mindful of the cartouches w/ 300 grit then use 4-6 coats of raw linseed oil 1-2 days to dry in between, 0000 steel wool and finally a coat of gunny paste or Tom's 1/3 wax.) Soon as it arrives prolly gonna put out a vid. Stoked!

I have my CMP order sent in, awaiting a reply for an RM1308EXPERT* Question for you: I'm also a Wisconsin resident, and have purchased several firearms in the last few months. All those purchases required an intermediary FFL to receive the weapon and do the background check etc. From everything I've read on the CMP site, this transaction is different in that I can have it shipped direct to my home. Granted, I had to submit a notarized, quasi-ATF 4473. Did you get yours shipped direct to you (assuming you're not an FFL)? Thanks - and thanks for the video! * (from their site): "New commercial-production stock set and a NEW commercial-production barrel chambered for .308 Springfield. Bore condition will be 'as new', and barrels will gauge 'as new'. SPRINGFIELD (SA) or HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON (HRA)RECEIVER. The balance of parts on EXPERT Grade Rifles will match all service grade criteria, showing less wear and a better cosmetic appearance than a Field or Rack Grade. Cosmetic condition will be good to very good. Rifle finish may vary, exhibiting normal wear and/or color variation among the metal parts. May have some visible pitting, frosting, or other minor cosmetic deformity on the metal parts."
