@Alexandra Carrier Good question! So getting 0.25 ppm of ammonia in tap water seems to be pretty common. Are you using the API water test kit to test for ammonia? Apparently API ammonia tests are notorious for looking faintly green (www.reddit.com/r/Aquariums/comments/5v4y3r/ammonia_always_reading_025_ppm_out_of_the_tap/). Also, depending on your pH, ammonia does not tend to be toxic to fish at that amount (see www.blueridgekoi.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/pH-and-Ammonia.pdf). Bottom line: if your fish don't look stressed or unhappy and are eating well and not hiding... you may not have any problems. Maybe double-check on a fish forum (like the Aquarium Group Support on Facebook) to get more opinions from other people just to make sure. Hope that helps!

@@garry3294 welcome to the channel! I believe goldfish prefer cooler waters and clown loaches like hotter temperatures, so I probably wouldn't mix them together.

I just lost the second loach in a pair I purchased in 1997 - 24 years ago! The male passed in 2020. They were the smartest, funniest and most personable fish imaginable. I'll miss them terribly.

I just added 3 to my community tank. I am so happy to finally have them. They are wonderful fish to keep.

i miss my clown loaches soo much! their behavior reminded me of dolphins in how playful they were - ill be honest in my early fish keeping days, i went thru a few groups buying the cheapest smallest ones - i swear they were either very fragile or sick, because just the loaches would die, not their tankmates - heartbroken but determined, i splurged for larger ones and had much better success

Thank you for doing this piece ! I am designing an aquarium now , custom made by a friend who designs and builds custom aquariums . For clown loaches ( that I don’t even have yet !)... so I am researching .. Thank you Irene for being so smart and approachable - just enough science and quality information , and buckets of charm . You ( and Cory , who I also watch ... ) are a gem !

I love mine. I have had them 11 years now. My friends with snail explosions (coz their kids overfeed the fish) in their aquarium pick them out and give them to me for my loaches to hunt. That works great for me coz i can go on holidays without worrying about them and i don't need anyone to come and feed them everyday while i am away. My friends think i am a weirdo for being so happy when i get those pesky snails, but then again, they don't own clown loaches and don't realize their high value in clown loach tank. I give them regular sinking pellet foods for omnivore fish, snails as mentioned above, cucumbers or zucchini.

@@nicolelim9856 did what work? If i have enough snails in my tank, i can go away for a week and not worry about my fish, they will hunt the snails. Sometimes i wish the snails could multiply and grow faster coz my clowns are totally capable of whipeing out the snail population. I do feed my fish regular fish food too to give the snail population a break and time to recover and multiply.

My clown loach is the only one right now in the tank. He’s been with me for about 4 or 5 months and it turns out he thinks he’s a corydoras. He always follows them around and chills with them.

I once had clown loaches, When I got a betta, they chased him around and ate his tail. I only had 2 loaches, and their best friend was a bronze corydora. When I took the loaches back to the fish store because they were being too aggressive. The corydora sulked. But she is happier now with her albino corydora friends.

You can teach a lonely clown to take food from your hand. My oldest loach (got her feb 2008, and now in 2021 she is still with me.) Who was lonely for a while takes food from my hand, it is so much fun. Loaches are shy, skittish, but also curious. I put my hand with a sinking pellet in the water, and when the loach got closer, i would release it so it can take it. Next time i would wait till my loach comes even closer to my hand before releasing the pellet. After a while the loach thinks your hand is just a fancy food dispenser, lol... now my loach takes food right out of my hand.

What fish do you keep?

Fish like Loaches, Botias and Plecos love to be in tight places, where they feel secure. When trouble arrives, they can simply extend their sub ocular spines or fins to become instant grappling hooks.

I love clown loaches. In my experience, they are pretty hardy. They love to sleep on their side, which makes you believe that they are dead. But that's just the way they like to sleep.

Well I didn't do any research on the loaches. It was a whim from my wife. So I've learned almost the hard way. Now that my ich is calming down . I really enjoy them

Thank you so much I bought 2 clown loaches yesterday with a new tank and had no idea they ate invertebrates or needed at least 3 I’m gonna go out and get another couple and switch to some blood worms

We had a clown loach that would play dead and we ended up calling it "Brain Eater" because it was a Zombie, dead but not really. Lol! We are weird!

we have two clown loaches! theyre great algae eaters, thats a big reason we have them, as well as our pleckoes

I have been keeping Clown Loaches since the 80's, they originate from shallow rivers in the Borneo region where they reach a maximum size of 16 inches. They are commercially bred in countries like Singapore but this usually involves hormone injections. My last CL tank was 800 litres and had 38 Clown Loaches in it,sev eral were around 14 inches long. It was over filtered by 3 Eheim 2076e filters and had a 25% water change every 4 weeks. Provide caves or bogwood for them to hide in as it makes them happy. Clown Loaches do better in groups of 6 or more. :-)

Also forgot to add always have heater guards attached in a Clown Loach tank, Clowns will lie on heaters and burn themselves given half a chance. :-)

They say to keep the temp high at 85-86 degrees but what about the other fish in the tank? How can we make it work in a community?

All are wild-caught, and generally pretty recently. The trick is just getting them eating at all. Definitely by a group, and don't skimp on the meaty foods to get them started in your aquarium. I fall back on Frozen bloodworms when I have new clown loaches. Helps immensely. They need to keep those little fat bellies or they will waste away!

Personally I think that if clown loaches are aquatic puppies, then dojo/weather loaches are aquatic ferrets. Very similar fish in ways. Dojos also play dead, are without scales, and can be hand fed. They get not quite as big at up to 12 inches and live to a good 10 years. They won't bother even the tiniest nano fish, although they'll be curious and investigate, and won't eat or shred your plants. But they might uproot them from burrowing and searching for leftover food. They're omnivores and will gladly accept veggies in their mainly protein diet, and mine go nuts for boiled and skinned peas. Helps with digestion (floating tails means gas) thus the need for peas. Dojos, too, also swim at all tank levels and can swim backwards, albeit in a rather serpentine fashion. I've actually seen my dojos playing obvious games. They freeze, float upside down or vertically or horizontally to the surface, then flip and restart at the bottom. The main differences between clown and weather loaches... Dojos are a cold water fish. Anything over 74 F will shorten their long lifespan to only 3 or 4 years. They go between lazy (can sleep in wierd positions) and extremely hyperactive, like to burrow under the sand, and often perch amongst your plants in plain sight. You could try the brown mottled "wild" variety on dark sand, or if you like flashy fish like me, I've got my golden dojos on white sand. I have to say, they keep it spotless with very little help.

@@GirlTalksFish Really? Awwwe, thank you!!! And I actually used to have a ferret, so yeah, I know how well those personalities match up. They lay flat one second, then the next, are racing away and suddenly stop to look you dead in the eyes. Always playing games and making you laugh. Wish you could see one sifting through the sand as it looks for food, covering its fins entirely, then spazzing out when it does at last find food...but then loses track of where it went, swept by its tail. Seriously, watch a video of playful ferret antics and dojo loaches goofing off, you won't be disappointed. :)

I wish I can see them more often than I do, see them around 15 minutes or so a day during feeding and gone until the next day but every now and then I get to see a group of 5 or so swimming by, the most I see is around 12 together. They're so fast that I can't tell if I am seeing the same fish again coming in the other direction in my fishpond.

so even when they get big they wont eat my cardinal tetras?

Hi I have 2 clown loaches and 2 Yo Yo’s in my 30gl they are very small. I have recently seen them swimming from the bottom of the tank to the top of the tank constantly is this a sign of a problem? They don’t do it all the time but will do in for a couple of hours a day

If you want a clown loach, but don't want the size, try a Zebra loach. Same shape and same behavior and half the size. My current clown car of loaches (5) are 13 years old and 6-8 inches long. They love to cram themselves together in the tiniest of caves. They like to splash me when I add food to the tank as they swim upside down to get at the surface. They love to "vacuum" the dorsal fin on big cichlids. They destroy any dominance hierarchy in the tank much the same way The Three Stooges or The Marx Brothers upset the balance of criminals and upper crust society. The bigger they get, the more they come out in the open. I have moved across town with them three times and they respond to moves better than most fish. The best ich cure for them is heat - not less than 86 for a week or more. One summer out in the garage their tank was over 90 for five days. They love to chase laser pointers just like a cat. (I use my infrared thermometer) I've had Clowns for over 30 years... my current Bozos live in a 180g.

I love clown loaches however have never had success at keeping them. It has been many years but they always ended up with ick. I an guessing it was my tank parameters and the water not being warm enough.

Melissa Vines I had the same issues at first, best bet is to make sure the tank is well established in it cycle and keep the temperature above 82 degrees so that Ich cannot survive. Also make sure the loaches you purchase have been in the pet store for at least a week. Give them an hour or so to float and and adjust to water temp. Keep their tank dark, use the following: stress coat, Herbtana, and Artemiss. Herbtana and Artemiss were lifesavers for my tank of cichlids when they got infected by Ich from the clown loaches. Now I have my 6 loaches in a 55gal and they have been the longest surviving loaches I have kept. They’re definitely not shy! They float around the middle of my tank all day within their “pack.”

They are in a 55 gallon right now, been together since the FH was small. I have a 125 community if I need to move the loaches but so far so good. FH is about 4 inches now. FH chases them around a little during feeding but gives up, clown loaches are fast

I have one of these guys in another one of my tanks and all I can say is that he is very strange. He has this weird thing were he will just lie down and play dead in a way. I don’t think he’s sick or anything because he’s usually very active when he’s not doing this. So that’s his story I guess. Lol (Edit) I just finished the video. It’s normal. *Phew*

Males in females differ in colour intensity and roundness. What is missing is instructions how to catch them without hurting them seriously: They have extendable thorns below the eyes and trapping them or catching them with their hiding cave is the safest way for both fish and keeper. They have scales, but they are very tiny. Their immune system is weakened by low temepratures - that is why they get sick.

No mention of their "switchblades, they have protective, hooks that come out under their eyes, from what I remember. I had my friend take my piranhas, till I was done moving and they went In a tank with a clown loach . the loach wasn't touched

Is it bad I have sucking cat fish in a 65Ltr (pls don’t tell me the GO GET A BIGGER TANK, because I’m not the one who payed for my tank, my dad did so we can’t just go out and buy another one)

I just purchased 4 but am so paranoid to own them. I have a 75 gallon. Should I worry? Everyone saying they get big they get ich they require pristine water etc is freaking me out

Great questions! From the way Colin explained it, his fish are 4-years-old and they're still only 6-8 inches, so they grow fairly slowly. Also, if you keep the temperature higher around 85 degF, that will help prevent ich. Go to Colin's channel and talk to him, but he says they're a joy to keep and not as fragile as many people think. :)

Mmm, probably depends on a lot of things - are you seeing any aggression among them, is everyone getting enough to eat, is the tank overstocked to the point where you can't keep the water quality high with the frequency of water changes you do, do you like the fish, etc? Tank stocking is a pretty personal thing, so ultimately it's up to you and the health of the fish. :)

How do you get away with keeping a Red Tailed Shark with Clown Loaches?? I just had to surrender a beautiful, healthy RTS because it was bullying my CLs relentlessly. I have since gotten a third CL and they're the life of the party! I love how they romp and frolic when they aren't living in terror. Whats your secret??

Okay so ill update this info for most of yall yes there are people who breed clown loaches in captivity and yes they are sexable now am i the one who discovered this no but go check out aquarium co op or someone who has toured bioaquatix now that guy is a amazing breeder and you can go check him out
