Throwing threads out often forms a cloud of cotton ends floating above the pins, obscuring sight of all the hard work.
Using a pin, comb the threads as you go along into upright bundles and twist them into little ropes. Weave them in and out of the edge pins, or use longer ropes to pin further out on the pillow.
This leaves your work in progress visible to admiration and can even help to spot errors in time.
