Clothing Sizes in Japan

There's no consistency! I'm often asked what size I am when I try clothes on, and I hope this clears up why it's hard to answer that question sometimes. / alexlight_ldn for the fabulous Alex Light who's posts I referenced in this video.
Brands mentioned: Spinns, Wego, GU, Uniqlo, Earth Music & Ecology, Heather, Lowry's Farm, Milkfed, Rakuten, Shimamura, Punyus.

We bought some clothing for my teenaged daughter (14) from Japan, who wears a size 6 US, and thankfully, we measured her before we bought the goth style jeans and sweaters she wanted.

To reiterate: If you are not of a fairly average Japanese body type, model bodyweight will mean absolutely nothing for you. Your fat and muscle will not be distributed the same way. In Canada, tights are sized by height and weight, and I always need to size up because they assume I carry a lot less of my weight in my lower half.

When I was in Japan I found it most fascinating, that there were so many shops with "one size" only. I still think that it's so sad that many people can't wear these clothes. About the weight: I kind of get that they can give you a direction on which size might fit you from your hight and weight. But still, using weight as a measurement seems weird because of different body shapes, the distribution of muscles and fat etc. So, really as you said, let's wear clothes that fit us and make us happy, and don't care about sizes :)

Another interesting video! I honestly find clothing sizes so annoying. I have everything from a US 10 to a 16, M to XXL 🤣 I used to care a lot, but now I literally do not care what the tag says as long as it fits me how I like! That's so interesting how they show weight in Japanese model pictures though, like you said that makes no sense! Someone could be really muscular and weigh more than someone who isnt! 🙄

I can say from experience that you shouldn’t use the model photos as a reference as to how it will fit anyway (re: stating model height and weight) - clothing gets pinned and basted and all other sorts of tricks behind the scenes to fit the model better in photos. Even if you’re the exact height/weight/measurements, chances are it’ll look a lot different lol.

I hate getting use to japanese sizes and then ordering from H&M or GAP, size M or L, and end up with huge long clothes. Also hate japanese underwear sizes, nobody has boops or wth?

I would say it’s probably the same as western countries! Many of my co-workers have been/are larger than me and didn’t mention weight being a hurdle when applying or getting job. I haven’t found any issues with it. Although you do a yearly ‘health check’ in Japan where you will be weighed, blood work, urine etc, but it doesn’t actually affect your employment it’s just for health.
