Closing Our Restaurant

It is with a heavy heart to announce that Mija Seoul closed its doors on February 8th.
This has been an incredibly difficult decision for us to make, and we’re overwhelmed with sadness as this chapter ends.
From the very beginning, our goal was to create more than just a restaurant; Mija Seoul was an extension of our home and a homage to our love for Korea. We are incredibly thankful for the love and support we received from everyone, both online and those who visited us.
We want to take this time to thank our talented team for their hard work and dedication.
We’ve taken Mija Seoul as a learning experience and will utilize this time to grow. With the knowledge gained through Mija Seoul, we will continue sharing our love for Korean cuisine in a new form.
Again, thank you to Daniel, Junghoo, Keumhye, Jin, Minhee, Shinwoo, Yuna, Taeho, Yejin, Chloe, Bon & David, and everyone involved with our project.
This is not the end, and we will see you again.
For now, goodbye.
We love you Mija Seoul.
Much love,
Tina & Kevin

Thank you so much for everything. It's been a dream for us to open mija seoul and operate for the last 9 months. This wouldn't have been possible without all your support. We're incredibly sorry to disappoint everyone who was looking to come dine with us but we promise to be back in a different form soon. Love from Tina & Kevin

“you can’t just be working all the time. nobody does that” sorry, most successful restaurant owners do, at least the ones who become something. my uncle in law moved here at 21 from Italy. got a job waiting tables in new york through a friend. got hired as a chef and worked his was up. got good enough for an owner he worked for to invest in his restaurant idea, now it’s gone far enough he has 2 places. took 25-30 years of hard work. there were many moments where his skill allowed him to go up, but at any moment shit could’ve hit the fan. he poured everything into it and his work paid off I’m not saying you NEED to drop 30 years of bone grinding work, but that is really the level of dedication it takes to realize the dream of a good restaurant in your own vision. taking a vacation a MONTH after opening??? seriously? think about the staff who have to find other jobs now because you couldn’t commit I know this is coming off as a bit mean but I really can’t help it. I’m working 2 jobs that are killing me. 120 hours a week in total. I would kill to be able to realize my vision of a restaurant, but I don’t have that chance and I know my experience is not enough for dozens of staff to rely on me. I dunno why I even typed all this. no hate to you guys, just…sometimes this channel feels tone deaf. you expect sympathy when you fumble a restaurant after not planning it and fucking off to vacation

"In order to have a life that is sustainable and balanced you can't be just working all the time." The fact that she thinks operating a new restaurant wouldn't require that kind of sacrifice is mind blowing to me. The difference between wanting to be a restaurateur and being one is commitment and grind. I highly doubt she'll ever considering opening a restaurant in the future now that she realizes the amount of grind and sweat that is involved. You need to be borderline obsessive when it comes to the F&B industry. It's insanely difficult to succeed and equally easy to lose all your gains with a slight misstep.

People just love yummy comfort food that's cheap or a good financial deal more. She does a lot of that kinda cooking on her channel anyway, so she should stick to it.

Real reason why tina and kevin closed mija. Tina and Kevin were not on top of certain business aspects like making sure everyone had proper contracts, youtube prioritizing the restaurant so certain things were made in the mija for her videos and Kevin leaving to be her camera man, and being very immature leaders. They made a lot of promises to the workers about expanding the business, paying for classes about Korean alcohol, and even saying they would provide visas for some of the non-native workers. Some quit because they weren't being provided contracts so tina and kevin blamed that on the manager. After hearing that the workers were unhappy, Kevin felt like he was not appreciated enough and that the workers were ungrateful. This was during the time that he had to be in Denmark to wait for his Korean visa, leaving the restaurant to the workers to take care of it while Tina stayed with him. Again, this was something that they left to the very last minute and planned very poorly, leaving it to the workers to clean up the mess. Later on Tina got an offer by a company to make content for them in LA. She then tried to sell Mija off to one of the workers even while still being in a lawsuit with the landlord, saying that if that worker didn't accept that she would close the restaurant. She then posted an instagram story about her leaving the country before she had told the rest of the workers the news. The workers saw the story which the one worker who had been offered mija felt obligated to tell the team the situation. All the workers felt betrayed by Tina and Kevin. Kevin said that he could not run a restaurant while helping tina internationally when the team always felt sad because of him. Later on the majority of the staff left, leaving only three workers that stayed until the last day.

Like imagine opening a restaurant on a whim, getting sued and posting a ton of explicit videos on it online (where defamation is highly punishable in Korea), relying on a foreigner she barely knew to help, just to go on vacation right after opening?? Yeah she needs a big reality check. Ridiculous.

Lol, don’t start that over here. I thought about writing that, that Tina is running him to the GROUND. She found a really kind and driven man, who she is putting all her dreams on and expecting him to just facilitate her dreams while she gets to reap the benefits without realizing all the intense hard work and sacrifice it takes. My friends parents got divorced because of something similar. His dad helped his mom start a steel business, because that’s what she said she wanted to do, but then she ended up needing an accountant, someone to help with taxes, someone to help with filing reports, someone to help with writing proposals, and then when the business took off she didn’t wanna hire a manager, just kept leaning on him, mind you his dad is also CFO at the company he works at…. They ended up getting divorced in a really nasty divorce, because his dad just wanted his life back and the mom didn’t wanna sign the papers. I’m glad they closed the restaurant before it ended their relationship. Kevin needs to set boundaries of what he wants to do and not get subsumed in Tina’s life and actualizing her dreams while she plays manic pixie dream girl. And Tina needs to professionalize her systems and processes of how she runs things, to pay someone to do these things vs making your partner do them for free. But yo, as I write this, I realize, she’s ONLY 25, I think it’s great she’s learning these things early on, and has a partner who can clearly communicate that “Hey, this is a bit too much for us”….

Having worked in the restaurant business while in college, I realized the enormous amount energy that is needed daily just to get the plating out to the customer, nobody seems to realize all of the effort after the doors are closed to clean up, nor the effort to stock the next day and prep for the next evening. She has posted lot of things about her parents that weren’t kind and the superciliousness and entitled attitude bothers me. She literally has a name for and calls her fans by a nickname that feels like you have to have an ego about it. I didn’t know about the legal issues and things she had to overcome only to give up after a full reservation every night. Then, only a few months into the business she leaves Kevin and is jetting around the world eating at different restaurants. Why? Why wasn’t she there? I read reviews on her website, some that were since deleted about how they met Kevin, but Tina was never there. Regardless if you seat 30 people or 100, in a new restaurant, the manager should be present and pouring herself into the business. Maybe less money randomly travelling and more reinvested back into the business as well as time would have seen it succeed. Or making sure the head chef has a visa secured already? So many red flags. Where does this young thing get *so* much money? And her parents shelled out to have her attend the finest school in the USA and she has nothing but negative things to share online about them. She just seems a bit spoiled/out for herself. But that’s just my observation. Her and Kevin may be deeply in love, but I don’t see that chemistry on camera. The thing about the name for her fans is fairly common online and outside of youtube as well. It’s not anything weird, like fans calling themselves swifties and etc. About her parents, i think it’s a lot more nuanced than it seems, especially if you watch the content where she talks with her mom. Idk how curated it is but it seems like they both have baggage that they are now starting to unload. Don’t be so quick to judge people’s personal relationships. Though I wonder how wise it is for Tina to post about it so publicly, which will only invite this kind of scrutiny.

All this is true but I don't think the blame should be placed entirely on her. Yes, it's all "rich girl behaviour" but that's not something rich kids choose to do. Nobody makes a conscious decision to do things out of ignorance. Rich kids are a product of their upbringing. The parents decided to provide an ungodly amount of financial support, sending her to the best college, giving her the money to start her own restaurant, allowing her to live in her luxurious apartment. Having an incredibly easy protected upbringing is something I honestly wouldn't wish on anyone. The complete lack of stress and pressure means you don't grow as an individual. The parents enable her by letting her discuss their private family affairs with the whole world. I grew up with a single mother who was abusive and had to save like my life depended on it to get by. It taught me a lot about boundary setting, mental health, empathy, compassion, dealing with people, learning to develop mental grit and fending for myself and making meaning out of my life. If there was no pain in my life I would not have gotten out of my comfort zone or flourished as a person.

I mean it’s not hating when there are valid criticisms. No one goes on a month break after ONLY 4 MONTHS of opening a restaurant. I understand youre doing content for your channel, it’s work but you’ve already been making content around your restaurant. Leaving your restaurant without leadership from you as a co-owner, playing with people’s livelihoods. ALSO they are not the only ones taking a risk in the restaurant, the workers, the cooking staff all take the risk in working there. And no, dont give excuses about having to work all the time. You could’ve scaled the business down in the first place instead of going all out in making a restaurant then complaining about how hard the work is. It’s disappointing because it’s clear you never learn from your mistakes and the past criticism others had for you. You still frame yourself as a victim and hide behind your privilege.

Y’all need to be effin for real also. Kevin is what, 30? And he had the opportunity at 30 to run his own fine dining restaurant courtesy of meeting a young Korean girl who had the money to help him finance it. In Denmark, at his age he would still be a line chef in a restaurant, he would NEVER have been able to finance his own restaurant let alone compete with the established Michelin starred restaurants there, let alone have the stable stream client base that comes with Tina’’s popularity. People weren’t going to mija Seoul because they fell in love with Kevin, but because they fell in love with Tina, and so by extension Kevin. He also is getting a good deal from this, it’s not just Tina who found a guy to help her actualize her dreams but so did he. Did he end up doing most of the manual work, yes, and that’s unfortunate. But he didn’t even have the opportunity to run his own restaurant before, so let’s be fr, he should also be grateful for Tina. She’s also helped him financially a LOT, and helped him have something to do that he could call his own for the last year. They just need to figure out a balance so they don’t get resentful of each other. But come on, they both getting something out of this relationship, in that way they aren’t using each other but are USEFUL to each other. @@astridmaack4516 I don't know what went down with her vacation so can't comment there. But I'll also say she ain't sitting and twiddling her thumbs here. Her channel is her focus and in the end, it's why they even have people visiting the restaurant and booking them out 2 months in advance. They both have benefited from this and they both have used, been used. To me, it's not one person's fault it failed. Seems kind of immature to place the blame solely on one and entirely redeem the other. It was a give and take. And as adults, they knew what they were getting into from the start and what roles they each were to play. People are putting it's downfall completely on either one is just silly to me.

@@mizbarehana5498 I agree with you that it isn’t just on person’s fault. Multiple things made it fail in the end and that’s part of what makes this a learning experience. They tried their best, but despite all that, some poor decisions were made which may have contributed even more to the downfall of it all. I do hope they come back stronger, but also with a better sense of what is needed from them to make it work and the willpower to pull through it all.

To be honest that’s one of the first things I thought when I heard you two were opening a restaurant by yourself. When do they plan on sleeping. You two are perfectionists, and running au fine restaurant is no joke. Take some time to rest and if you feel like it later give it another try in a different format. Same and I think many commented the same thing when she was starting. Even with nearly guaranteed full bookings weeks if not months in advance (due to the fanbase), it doesn't change how much WORK it is and therefore how time consuming it is. You can't part time running and head-chef'ing a restaurant and you definitely can't do it while working on another career (KZread). I imagine they wouldn't say they'd do anything different, unless she's financially really in a hole due to how much she invested in the building, but I wonder how they would respond if they were asked if they'd make the same choice or utilize a Pop-up restaurant business model to put out their fine dining Korean food and get in-person interaction with Dooby fans. That way they could scratch those itches but not overly invest into a brick & mortar restaurant location and be at it for months before they realized it was just too much to handle. Doesn't a Pop up Mija Seoul seem like the perfect Dooby version of a fan-sign? Instead of a meet & greet fan-sign event it's a restaurant pop-up where fans can meet her, get a picture and buy Tina and Kevin's food. Win-win for Tina, Kevin, the fans, and Tina's accountant seeing the low overhead and no long term investment required.

They're clearly closing due the business not being profitable, hiring more people in their case wouldn't have made much of a difference since their location and business model as a whole is heavily limiting their expansion. So basically, in order for it to be profitable, they needed to do more with the same or an even smaller workforce and KZread lowering as priority for Tina, this is clearly not possible so it has to go.

I remember when Tina had an argument with her parents regarding this matter, coz I knew for sure that her parents were thinking long-term and not only for the next 9 months. There was also a time when Tina went to travel to the US alone a few months after opening the resto. I feel like this is not the passion of Tina, but more like Kevin’s. It feels like Kevin pushed this idea to Tina to find some common interest between the two of them. I thought it was mostly a way for Kevin to continue/advance his career in Korea, but now it’s not quite as clear whether his intent is to continue a “traditional” culinary career or whether he wants to be a bigger part of Tina’s content. This sounds like something that could’ve been worked out if you only stuck it through and didn’t close the restaurant abruptly. After all the legal drama and renovations you had to go through, it just doesn’t make any sense to give up that easily. Sounds like you need to hire an assistant / cameraman because you need the help and Mija needed somebody more experienced to run the back of the house if things were overwhelming. Closing the restaurant you have just opened sounds like a rash decision, especially if you said you have been consistently fully booked since day 1. Kevin looks like the more heartbroken one between the two of you and it’ll be disappointing if he will just transition to becoming a cameraman for your vlogs, given he needs a job for his visa. You should’ve thought things through, better, Dooby.

They haven’t said they won’t do another restaurant, they have just said that until they CAN figure out how to hire people, get the pricing right etc, they will close. It’s called strategy. They didn’t go into this with one, and now they realize they need one. It’s harder to fix a broken system, than just start a system that isn’t broken. Consider this restaurant their a/b testing phase in engineering, their relationship, and their workload balance. They’ll get it right. They have the luxury of being able to CLOSE a restaurant without it bankrupting them or their life going into financial ruin, they did the right thing. They can revisit this later. It’s a restaurant it’s not like they decided to stop operating on someone mid surgery. It’s not a life and death decision.
