Gail, I use under a pound but just try a fistful and see how it goes and then either add more or reduce it. You really need to make a bunch to get the hang of it. Some people leave the inner part without a hole and then us a 1/8" drill bit to make the hole. Ask any questions you want. Don't know what you need since you can't hear me.

Hi John, Thanks for sharing this cool method. I have quick question, the inner whole is used to put salt in it. I noticed you don't leave any holes at top. How is it suppose to function. I meant how is salt suppose to come out? Thanks so much for helping and sharing this. Regards, SK

It doesn't matter what kind of clay you use? Was just wondering, because you do not glass the inside.
