Close encounters IN THE WILD | Hugh Allen | A Jungle Adventure Audiobook (English)

Ойын-сауық

Hugh Allen's writings are characterized by thrilling and compelling storytelling which are laced with polished prose of such precision and economy that is matched by few in this genre.
After a head wound received on the field of battle during WWII in 1942, leaves him out of active duty military service, Allen is hospitalized in India. Over time, he developed a fondness for the country and bought a huge estate in the Mandikhera village of Pipariya district, Madhya Pradesh in central India, where he lived for more than two decades.
With his sister Babs, he farmed the estate and settled down to a quiet, peaceful, and idyllic life. In between his farm work, he would find time for his nature walks in the forests surrounding his estate, where he would frequently encounter injured, wounded, or rogue animals. With his conscience clear, he would then give full reign to the hunting instinct and go after them to protect his farm and livestock.
The two stories presented in this recording are selected from his only book, The Lonely Tiger (1959).
All images and sounds utilized are stock and are royalty-free.

    I had to do a little digging but I was surprised myself at the richness and variety of this genre. It's fallen a little out of favor over the years, except for a select few, so many quality works are out of print and not easily available online as well. Thanks for the comment!

    Allen was lucky that he dropped that shotgun slug and even luckier that a big clap of thunder struck just then. A big male tiger can take several shots to bring down with the largest big bore rifle shells. I think we all would be frozen with fear when a tigress stopped at 5 yards and stared us in the face. Excellent Narration ! Great Story !

    I was thinking the same thing. Ofcourse that's an impossible situation to find yourself in now. But back then I can only imagine the rush of adrenaline surging through your veins when (and if) you encounter a dangerous tiger on foot. Steady hands and steely nerves are needed.

    I’m not sure if it was Corbet or Anderson. The ideal shot, according to one of them is under the left shoulder/ armpit. Smashes straight into the heart. Or dead in between the eyes. Off course.conditions matter.

    I absolutely love this. Love the background. The story of the leopard blinded & rendered helpless is common place in India. Shikaris driving along on the road & shining their flashlights into the jungle. Shoot the first two eyes they see & drive away. Anderson has written about this. Love the sound effects. Great job.

    That's right, though it was more common in the 1950's when the introduction of the automobile among the Indian nouveau riche crushed the wildlife. Too many people started to emulate the British, who were gone by then. The '50s were probably also the heydays of African safari hunting too with air travel making it easier to get there. This is the period Anderson was at his peak and so was Allen. Love reading all your thoughtful comments. Keep them coming. Thanks!

  • @selvalore

    @selvalore

    That's a fair comparison of their writing styles. Unfortunately for Allen, he wrote in a genre that has fallen a little out of favor over the years so not quite in the same category as those other two literary heavyweights you mention. But I quite agree, he deserves a wider acknowledgement for the quality of his storytelling.

    Hi, thanks for sharing your thoughts. A black panther is just a leopard, and not a different animal. The stories here represent different situations, experiences and writing styles of different authors. They are unique in their own way. For instance, nearly all of Corbett's stories revolve around tigers and leopards but nobody would deem them monotonous. These are animals that are charismatic mega-fauna for a reason. As for variety, I plan to read something different in the coming narration. The black panther of sivanipalli is a fantastic story and I will probably do it sometime in the future.
