it wasn’t trying to “establish a connection” by pressing itself up against her on the door. nor was it trying to kill her. it was mimicking her, only it’s a little delayed so it can’t mimic her perfectly and be totally synchronized. lena opening the door meant the clone was going to slam it shut by default since it fell a little behind and lena didn’t get the door open fast enough. if lena DID fully open the door, the clone simply would have followed her out. lena was suffocating and crushing HERSELF by resisting, hence why when she passes out the clone does too and releases her. if she’d just relaxed the clone would have relaxed too but she was panicking (i don’t blame her). the clone never had malicious intentions, it didn’t WANT to hurt her. it hits her because SHE tried to hit IT, so really lena hit herself. at the end the clone gains enough independence to understand lena’s intentions, just like kane’s clone, which is why lena’s clone caresses kane’s body. kane instructed his clone to find lena. lena instructed her clone to stay behind with the grenade, which is why it stops mimicking her and doesn’t run after her WITH the grenade.

Such is the nature of our relationship with God, where we are the mimics on an imperfect delay. And such is the common nature between us and God to create imperfect copies. Also, there is the fact that any visiting alien race would surely want to mimic its host species by completely assimilating physically, which is what that scene is all about. Those two things combined to create something truly otherworldly. And only a brilliant design team could have come up with it. It's original and affecting. This really hit me deeply trying to process and heal from a narcissistic relationship. The “alien” or for me, narcissist, was trying to mirror me. To close the doors when I needed to escape. To figure out every drop of empathy I had and take it over. To clone me because it itself was intrinsically miserable. While I was at home painting the room we had together, bawling into my hands, he was gone. And I felt it was my fault. My fault for letting someone else in that actually cared about me. My fault for distancing myself. She made it out alive; and I will too.

Like the bear, the alien is probably also reflecting her emotions. Meaning that it was somewhat aware of her motivations, that's why it looked sad when she put that grenade on it's hands. Her husband was a professional solder and they are trained to restrain their emotions, or they're supposed to, so it wasn't sure what the humans wanted from it until she came.

@@Khifrom4 Except that she didn't kill it! That wasn't her at the end of the movie. That was the "alien". Why do you think she didn't answer when the clone of the husband asked if she was Lina and they showed their eyes moving and glowing the same way? It would also make sense why the security there allowed them to even see each other. She didn't tell them that wasn't her husband. If you're a government organization trying to protect the world, why would you leave a perfectly in tact "alien" specimen so lightly guarded and even with the opportunity to interact with a supposed human? Such reasoning is undeniable proof that "Lina" didn't tell the scientists and others in the lab the exact truth about everything that happened in the lighthouse.

Soldiers are NOT trained to restrain their emotions. Please let’s not set a toxic and bad precedent with this. Solider and Marines are trained to follow orders first and foremost, and part of that is to maintain their bearing, composure, and discipline. Mind you, your comment said “trained” and soldiers/Marines are indeed taught to maintain their composure and military bearing during parade ceremonies, marching drills, promotion ceremonies, and change of command ceremonies. But there is legit no training methods, or training exercises, that says “don’t cry when you feel sad. Don’t get angry when you lose. Don’t be happy when you win” Dudes who try to claim this are young fools trying to romanticize this.

The Shimmer and Lena exchanged a part of each other, because Lena wanted to prevent the Shimmer to get out, the Shimmer stayed and burned everything, but also the Shimmer wanted to get out so made Lena leave and lives within her. It wasn't attacking her, it is a continuation of the film's primary theme surrounding cancer. It isn't so much a foreign body attacking her as it is replicating her movement and in doing so, it is as though she herself is blocking her own way. At first its attempt to imitate her are merely shallow imitations. She walks in a circular motion to try to outmaneuver it, it does the same. She sprints past it, it quickly "pursues". Both she and the alien form are mimicking one another in such a way that they are both trying to escape through the door simultaneously, and as a result, the more she squirms and resists, the more it does too, providing pressure and resistance towards her. By the time she passes out and then comes to, it is perfectly synchronized with her, giving off no intent other than her own. The reason she is able to hand it the phosphorus grenade is not because she "tricks" it into mimicking her, but because she realizes that all she need do is imagine her own intent/desire (for death), and have it accept it, and it commit suicide in her stead.

maybe i'm wrong, but the entire scene the alien seems to be mimicking her people are saying it's a telepathic thing but it seems more like an imperfect mimicry, it can't fully anticipate what she is about to do nor imitate it just like her, sharp turns and movements are heavily delayed by the entity clearly trying to understand and copy her, probably to fit in mimicry can be done for many reasons, but the main reason is always survival, this being became sentient from her contact with it and started copying and learning in order to, most probably, survive now here's the kicker... up until that moment the being and her weren't "in sync", she wasn't reaching or actively communicating with it back, instead she tried to avoid it as the entity pursued.. so the minute she _is_ actively interacting back, it seems the entity is "listening" much more actively... she gives it something and she runs but it seems more interested in what she's giving him rather than copying the run... the expression i believe it's purely mimicry too as she seemed sad and concerned while she did this, almost like she was thinking of exploding _with_ the entity (maybe a little nudge at self destruction literally and metaphorically, mostly the latter which does happen right after) TLDR: i honestly think it didn't run with her because the interaction was worth stopping to analyze, especially after the explosion as it seemed confused, it's a being of pure and raw untamed creation meeting for the first time a concept of destruction.. self destruction at that, which are explosions and uncontrolled fire..

I wanna give my theory about this scene, or atleast towards the end of it. It feels almost as she is Prometheus( Greek god that created man) and the alien represents humans. When the alien was given the grenade it feels as if she was giving it as a gift. Prometheus gave fire to humans. Also it’s said that Prometheus made humans in gods image. We can see her as technically a god in this scene. She then leave the alien with the gift: fire. The alien is first curious with the fire but eventually cause harm to its and self. This may represent the ups and down of having fire. We can create with it but we can also destroy.
It's the sound design for me. I can't geek out about this film enough, it's so bloody good.
This movie is absolutely amazing

@@awaistanoli6882 ANNIHILATION
Brilliant adaption of a confused but interesting book and trilogy. The movie is very clear (compared to the book)- the alien probably does not feel anything like human emotions and is likely not trying to communicate but only copies and mixes everything around it (animals, buildings, light, people). The whole idea of the movie is that it is alien and things important to humans (communication, purpose, structure) are likely not important to it. It may not even be intelligent. It just copies and mixes for its own purpose or because of instinct. The alien Lena is destroyed because Lena is self-destructive (she cheated on her loving and faithful husband) and the doppelganger picked up that emotion and permitted itself to be burned. Along with the earlier bear scene, especially eerie is the crystal trees that are a combination of the inanimate lighthouse and trees. Her "replacement" husband is similar to her doppelganger- the doppelganger absorbs part of individual but mix it with other characteristics. The husband doppelganger picked up the "instinct" to return to his wife- but he is not a complete copy. The alien only makes distorted copies of the original and mixes it with other things. The creepiest scene may be the guy whose stomach is filled with snakes. Perhaps he felt that he was disloyal and a snake?
The soundtrack and sound effects added alot to an already unsettling scene
I think maybe the alien needed a territory to survive but was ultimately trying to make contact in the end. Maybe we could have learned instead of killing.
She was mirrored perfectly, up until she gives the grenade, but then the duplicate just stood there.

Still can't believe this flopped in theaters, it was so good. Pure cosmic horror.

Looks like Darth Vader will be pissed off if he finds out that padme is an alien , so he will force chock her but this time for good 🤣
This is like some Tomb Raider doppelganger type shenanigans, and I'm here for it.

@@TrinityTalks Okay here goes, the doppelganger is mimicking her because in a way it is her. All her internal thoughts, and feelings which is why it didn't run after her with the grenade. The doppelganger gained some conscious free will in that moment when she handed the grenade to it realizing that she wanted to kill herself which obviously she didn't if she ran afterwards otherwise she would have stayed there and got killed with her doppelganger. It had no free will of its own yet could think and feel. When you put it the way I say it the doppelganger sounds more like misunderstood victim than an threat, but to sum up my personal opinion: This doppelganger mimicking her every action is a representation that we can be our own worst enemy, and that can lead to our destruction.
That alien do be having cake 😳
It’d be so hard not to be completely terrified in that situation.

This is the first movie ever when alien was true alien looking. Like something impossible to describe.
One of the best scenes in the best movies
By far the creepiest part of this IMO is at from 2:42 to 3:26 (although it technically counts for the whole video). It's not that it doesn't really have a face - it does, in the most basic possible sense, no eyes, nostrils or mouth - but there's an intelligence/consciousness behind it. Studying her, regarding her. Not necessarily intentionally malicious or dangerous but acting mostly by imitation or impulse. I'd liken it to being looked at by a shark: it might not be attacking you, but there's an inherent fear behind not knowing what it's thinking as it's looking at you.
Lena never made it out The Shimmer didn't teleport, we were only seeing things from it's point of view chasing after Real Lena, Real Lena was trying to prevent Shimmer Lena from making it out which is what lead to the fight Lena was trying to escape and suddenly saw a being in front of her, that being was the Real Lena as seen by the Shimmer Lena Remember, when Lena first made it inside the lighthouse she saw the burnt body and went through the recording which she learned was left by her husband Cane before he committed suicide with a grenade and shortly after that another Cane (Shimmer Cane) comes into shot, I believe that Cane like his wife also survived, made it to the lighthouse, interacted with the Shimmer and it took his form too but Cane unlike his wife didn't put up a fight, I think that his wife's infidelity broke him and he wasn't really planning on going back home, he wanted to die there as he had nothing left to live for Real Lena ultimately gave in as Cane was the only reason why she came and realising that he was dead and that the Cane that came back wasn't the real Cane but Shimmer Cane perhaps she realized how futile her attempts were in trying to stop Shimmer Lena from making it out as the Shimmer or maybe a part of it was already out there She must have also felt responsible for his death and also felt she had nothing left to live for so she resigned herself to the same fate as her husband And I also think that Lena also purposely set the lighthouse on fire too to bring it down with her perhaps thinking that would kill the Shimmer

So basically, the alien like creature was preventing Lena to escape. But as you mentioned that this scene is shown in the point of view of the alien, in reality it was actually Lena who was preventing the Alien to escape. It actually makes sense now, because in the ending of the movie, both Cane and Lena share a moment and hug, and we see that Lena is not herself, but the very Alien we see in this scene. I always used to think that Lena got possessed due to the Alien like environment and was slowly transforming into an Alien creature, quite reminiscent to the other character that evolved into a humanoid plant (I don't remember her name). But I like your theory better.

There is also the importance of the affair and Lena's relationship with her husband. It is reflected and made manifest in ways throughout the movie. One being in the doppelganger. Not giving a direct answer or anything because like tessa said, this film is definitely more of a question than an answer. And gina bringing out the beauty of art in that it brings you the audience inside yourself. It helps one "reflect" just how the movie is all about reflections and refractions too. Get it? There is a heavy psychological element in this film for sure. Where most comments i see people speaking about alien this and alien that lol no offense yall. Just think this film is absolutely brilliant because of it's multilayered themes, messages, and metaphors kzread.info/dash/bejne/eGZmsJmdfaXNddI.html

Yes, everyone gets it, you are not the only smart one, captain obvious, so less pathos please. movie does not just have psychological element, it IS psychological in itself.
