sentiment time: i watched ONLY bernadette from this community for over a year without me even sewing myself, and then your video with the grace kelly/eighteenth century dress was recommended on her eighteenth century summer gown, and i clicked because i loved the thumbnail so much, and then for the loooongest time you two were the only costubers i followed. by now i follow a lot of them and even started sewing myself (great deal of thanks to yiu two because you encouraged me that i can learn to sew!), but you two kind of got me sewing, and that's why you two still are my favourites! lots of love from switzerland, i loved the video so much!!!

Same! I’m almost completing my first dress. It’s veeery simple, but hand sewn. I never thought I could sew because sewing machines scare me, and are expensive. But Bernadette hand sewing her garments encouraged me! Her backstitching video helped a lot

Same! I found Bernadette though the "Recommended" algorithm. Which lead me to stumbling on Costume College and CosTube and all of the lovely men and women of this community. Thankfully this was about a month before lock-down so I was able to pick up the basics for hand-sewing and some fabric. I relearned how to sew by making cushions and footstools. I've _kind_ _of_ taught myself pattern drafting (ain't quite there yet) and entered a dress into the Foundations Revealed competition. I even found a hand-crank 1915 Singer 99K to sew with (So much easier than an electric). Honestly, sewing has helped me get through this past year. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown

I remember being thrilled in the early 1980s to wear my aunt's 50s dresses to parties and my grandmother's formal dresses to formal events... they all now live in my sister's closet. The one we never wore was my great-grandmother's 1920 bugle bead flapper dress. It was always too fragile.

@@LynnHermione I believe that is a different situation.Even if a piece of clothing or jewellry is extremely old or fragile,if it belonged to your loved ones, you are honouring them by wearing said pieces .Wedding dresses for brides,baptism baby clothes embroidered by a great grandmother's loving hands.They have a special meaning .As if the clothes themselves had soul.A reproduction of those things is not the same.

I like that you and Bernadette both filmed yourselves on the zoom call. That's good filmmaking. :)

One of my joys is wearing my vintage items. I collect antique and vintage jewelry, purses, hats, and other accessories. I'm starting to build my wardrobe, and have some lovely, wearable items from the 50's and 60's. Most of my items are in wonderful shape, I'm very careful with them, and nothing I own is especially rare. While I do have a couple of fragile items that aren't in rotation, I think it's a shame to have so many lovely things and not use them as they were meant to be used, just leaving them in a box or drawer, especially when most of what I own still has so much life left. That said, like Bernadette, I consider myself a caretaker of these items, and am proud to be part of their heritage.

As the copy was nearing completion, I was thinking about what you were saying about that original dress living on in your wardrobe, and suddenly all I could think was "You're giving that dress a daughter!" and now I am feeling so damn sentimental and OMG!!

In a weird way, it's like you're giving the old dress new life through the new dress. I think b/c as you move, skip, twirl around in it, I feel like I understand how the old dress would have moved if you were wearing that one instead of the new one. It's really cool!

The only thing missing was Bernadette 's reaction to your creation. It was a lovely video and the gown was gorgeous and flowed so effortlessly. Thanks for the wonderful work.

There's something so inherently magical about seeing a dress from the past come alive again.

When I was a kid, we used to have dresses like that in our dressup box. My mum was a champion ballroom dancer in her younger years... sigh, to have them now.

“What have these walls heard?” The old church where I live is from the mid-12th century, and judging by just the stories I’ve heard of events in that building, I wonder how much more the walls could tell us if they could speak. The “new” church, being only 140 years old, probably doesn’t have quite as many stories.

So, I live not too far from 'the plague village' and some of the doors have the infected mark still clearly burned on them, from about the 1600's, just there, on the house. Always great fun walking around there.

I felt a bit bad about my weetabix coated Victorian table at that part. But if a table isn't being used is it really a table?

If it makes you feel better (re storage): there are professional standards that we all aspire to, and then there is (what my grad school pals and I say) "macgyver-chiving". Nothing lasts forever, and Bernadette's tips are quite good. The main thing is to keep objects away from rapid and frequent temp and humidity shifts, bugs, and light!

The original dress was exactly like the one my grandmother wore as the mother of the groom to my uncle's mid 1950's wedding. I was 5 at the time and thought she looked like a golden fairy godmother. She was so very elegant. Thank you for reconstructing this beautiful piece of history. I have been watching Bernadette fora couple years and am delighted to add you to my subscription list. By the way, the little " triangly thing" under the arm is called a gusset :)

Right?! Initially, I was 1950’s? Umm 🤔 not really my Jam. BUT ... BB & BMD? All up in my jam. This, thought I, I must watch! By the end, I loved the collaboration and the beautiful dress. I still feel the urge for a full around the rear peplum and to the ankle skirt. I also love the history and endless stories my noodle brain makes for this dress. Plus, many of the features are based off times I do adore 🥰.

I kid you not, my Mother made this exact dress for me for my 8th grade graduation, 1966. It was made out of fabric that had been used for my older sister's high school graduation dress, 1965. My mouth dropped open when I saw it here! It was made of a very shiny fabric with roses woven into it. I wanted to save it, but Mother decided to cut it up and make another top out of it for herself. You have no idea how much joy I got from seeing it again!! Thank you so much!

When you two were talking about people damaging antique clothing, it made me think of when me and my husband go to car shows and see a 30s car chopped to ma a something new.

I am amazed by how you were able to figure those bust-pleads out! And the whole dress looks like an exact copy of the original one (that was the point, I know, but it looks perfect!). Really interesting to see the process and the construction of this dress! Actually nothing too fancy, but it looks absolutely gorgeous!

You are an absolute wizard for figuring out that bust pleating! WOW!

Nicole Rudolf and Abby Cox would also be good to contact for this kind of project. They work with this exact thing often. Just an FYI.

This is amazing! And you could hide a pocket under the peplum. It could be very discreet and lovely, especially if one had some matching leftover cabbage to use as the ribbon going around their waist. Very very nicely done.

I found out that I’m a theatrical romantic kibbe body type and that 1930s+1950s are supposed to be my best clothing years. I must say that this will be a fun sewing project! Thank you for the pattern, looking forward to making this beautiful dress 🥰❤️

This is my era. I was a teenager during the 50’s, but the only item from that time is my wedding dress. I had a conservator build a home for it within six months of the wedding. I took it out for my daughter’s wedding in 1983, but the firm I used the first time had gone out of business,so my daughter bought acid free box and tissue, and it now lives at her house, awaiting another bride. I loved the way. It was done in the first conservation because unlike most silk and lace gowns I’ve seen will in a few years begin to turn yellow, but mine was still it’s original white color. I’m so happy to see this beautiful recreation of this lovely dress, you are an artist. ❤️

holy cow, bella!! you were (dare i say) fated to make a replica of the original dress. i nearly wept when you tried on the mock-up and it fit you like a glove. and what a perfect use for the rest of the christine daae pink silk--i was thrilled you had exactly enough, even for a circle skirt! the final dress you made is absolutely glorious--so soft, pretty, flowy, flattering. just gorgeous and perfect and beautiful!!

Oh I can not, mostly because of that pleats on chest, because it looks so easy when you do it and it still broke my brain half way through :-D

The wonky armpit bit is an integral gusset. I came to say that the black petticoat and hat really give the look a womanly sophistication belying what could have been a very girlish turn given that yummy pink. The black ups the Door New Look vibe, too.

That is an absolutely gorgeous recreation! If you ever decide to create a printable pattern of it I would love to make one too (I'm especially curious about the bolero). And as always, this was a great video!

that talk about the magic of watchin an old building : i'm belgian an where I live we have a fair share of really old buildings (which i'm so grateful for a lot of buildings and sometimes whole towns have been demolished in the 40s some were rebuild to resemble the original but a lot have been replaced with modern things) and even throughout my life i've been told trough school that it was important to think of them but it never really touched me until i stopped in front of a church and it hit me that parts of this building were literaly a thousand years old, we have local folklore of the architechtural properties of another church,( that's how old it is) yet another one has been built on a stone that was worshipped way back in the bronze age and a local museum has been built inside an actual XVIIth century house (the only one i know of in belgium) and yet i don't feel anything going to school everyday in a repurposed XVIIIth century ceramic factory

For some reason I wasn’t subscribed to you but I clicked for Bernadette and then once I saw you I remembered binging hours of Cinderella magical fabric content😍 my apologies!!! Subscribed now! Edit: I think that because of the mass manufacture industry it makes it difficult for people to understand how (and why) to care for things. I personally have antique pieces (furniture and housewares) and I would much rather use them and enjoy them but I am careful and protective over them.

I absolutely love the dress and bolero. The pink silk and black petticoat are gorgeous. You really do a 50's style dress justice.

I would love to be able to purchase a PDF of this pattern! The dress is stunning and I want to make it for myself; 1940s and 1950s are my complete aesthetic.

You two have inspired me to try on my own much newer red and black bolero gown now that I have lost my Covid-19 weight gain. I bought it to wear for my sons wedding and have worn it every Christmas since,except for 2020. My granddaughter will be eight years old this Christmas coming I hope that we can have a photo with Santa again this year. This turned out fantastic! I well remember ladies wearing this style.

A truly remarkable job recreating the dress. Being able to turn a three dimensional object into a flat pattern and then into another three dimensional object boggles my mind. The color was perfect and the black slip? made the color pop. The dress also had the perfect amount of swoosh when you spun about.

I didn't realise that the peplum was asymmetrical, until the end! How cool!

I bought a vintage pattern from Stephanie Canada (not sponsored - Simplicity 3003) of a yummy evening dress with a sweetheart neckline and a matching bolero. The bolero is almost spot on to yours. It a variation where there's one back piece and two front pieces and facings. With the sleeves directly attached to body and the body being shaped with darts to create the same rounded front. If you're looking to recreate something in the 'vintage' category would it help to see if you can find a similar pattern from that period? It will be a simplified version of a couture dress, but it would, at minimum, give you a basis to your best construction guess. The pattern is built on the blocks of the period and can give some clues to proportion. Also, never underestimate the power of a period-appropriate sewing manual. They'll have some clues for order of construction. Your recreation is Stun-ni-ing. So well done. Please say you'll wear it to the grocery store?? - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown

Beautiful job! The V under the arm is called a gusset. If you are ever stuck on how to put 20th garments together, there are plenty of sewists out here who were there and made this stuff and know the techniques and are happy to assist xo

I love this whole thing SO MUCH!! I love the original dress, I love the beautiful fabric you used to recreate it, and the reveal made me a little bit teary!!! This was absolutely fascinating! You did an amazing job! This video also brought back memories. I was raised by a professional seamstress/tailor and virtually all my clothes were made by her. So they were quite unique. If I could bring back any dress I wore from the 50s, it would be a party dress I had in 1959 - when I was six. Red satin with white satin piping trim on the cap sleeves, Peter Pan collar and the edges of the petal-shaped skirt panels. It had a wide white satin sash that tied in back. Alas, I don’t remember how it was fastened in back - either a zipper or self-covered satin buttons. Still, it was my favorite dress. I have a b & w photo of the top, but not the whole dress. I must say, I envy your extraordinary skill!

The fitting is so perfect 😱 As if the dress had been made for you 70 years ago !

Apartment friendly storage for dress boxes. If the doors in your hallway have door frames, a piece of wood can be set on top of those door frames spanning the hall giving you a large shelf above your head. Many home reno places will cut the piece of wood you're buying to size for a couple dollars. Depending on the amount of weight you're storing, and the sturdiness of your boxes, you may even be able to just set rails on top of the door frames. Make sure you have a sturdy step stool too. No damage. Take them with you when you move. If you're in a house, and can drill into the walls, the same can be done in over a stairway with spare headroom by installing shelf brackets, or wooden "rails" to support the shelf.

The term for the underarm triangle May be called “a gusset”, not quite sure. The added ruffle also has a name. It could be called “a swag” but that is a term for window curtains. So I’m not sure. But, I am BLOWN AWAY by this dress! You are simply amazing! You have more than talent, you have instinct! You are a talented seamstress and becoming a designer. You’ve begun by copying, your personal touch was the color of the fabric and the way you styled your outfit. You are evolving from reproducing to creating a new look. You are emerging and it’s wonderful to see. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
