Clip Studio Quirks Explained for Photoshop users

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I'll explain some of the “quirks” that Photoshop users might find when switching to Clip Studio Paint. Although these apps are similar in functionality in many ways, there are enough differences that you might find it frustrating to use at the start, so I’ll be covering some of those.

Clip Studio Paint is my favorite art software overall, so obviously I like you doing more Tuts in CSP. I can see that coming from PS, CSP might seem strange, but what I love about it, is the customizability. Especially with selections, it is very advanced. You can make your inking layer(s) as reference, and make the magic wand always make selections based on those layers, not the coloring layer you are on. You can also expand the selection automatically, so that it goes under the line art and avoid white edges. The same options are available for the fill bucket (which I find useless in PS) so you can fill areas very fast and efficient. You can save all the settings of a tool to create one specifically for a task, so you don't have to keep switching around these settings. I don't know if you would use these in your workflow, but I can see them being interesting to a colorist. I also believe that in PS, you can not clip a layer to a group, but in CSP you can. So If the inks layer is divided into multiple layers, you can clip to all of these if you want to add adjustments or color over it. It also has some interesting features for color selection, like the approximate color palette and the Intermediate color palette. The latter lets you add 4 colors in the 4 corners of the palette and it will give you a range of intermediate tones. I find it quite interesting to find new color harmonies and compositions. Another thing that could be useful is auto-actions, so you can instantly recreate a specific layer stack, or quickly add a specific adjustment layer. Reuben Lara has shown great use for this in his Gumroad tutorial for coloring in CSP (If you have not checked this out, please do!) Thanks again Kurt for trying this out, always good to get new perspectives!

I’ve been using clip for a long time and I love it! I am glad to see that you are giving it a try. One of my favorite things to do with the lasso, is turn on the “create new” setting. This basically makes it like you’re holding down shift automatically. You can still hold down alt to remove a selection. I just found it to be a bit quicker. Also, the lasso fill tool is worth checking out as well.

Hi Kurt..... Yay! Glad to see you starting on Clip and I am definitely looking forward to seeing more of these tutorials. You and Reuben Lara will make a great team getting more artists interested in Clip Studio Paint. For me it is a great alternative to Photoshop. One thing you might want to mention, if you haven't discovered it yet, is the Select and fill tool, a great way to do flats much quicker, not that you do much flatting that is! As much as I really enjoy this program, there are still many things that I discover as I work with it, and you will too. Thanks again for climbing on board with Clip Studio Paint. Stay safe out there.

I swear, I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos, and I've become the clip gurue in my little artist group. one thing I also tend to turn off as well as stabalization on a lot of brushes, is the starting and ending settings. the vast majority of brushes it does nothing but add uneccesary processing time. So for intemediate computers, turning it off makes the brush a little bit more responsive. The next thing I advise is pressing Ctrl+K to bring up the program's prefferences, navigate to "tablet" Because this is where you maximize Clips responsiveness with your personal tablet. I've got significant improvements by just getting people to swap "prefere speed" to "prefer quality" Because, ignore the name, some tablets just perform way better under "quality mode" while others better under "speed" I do advise restarting clip if you tick any boxes in this tab, or they won't take full affect. Next I tell people to go to Ctrl+K > cursor, and tick "no delay" because who want's the cursor to lag behind the pen?

There's an entire world of advantages too, in inking with its vector layers. From "correcting lines", starting where you left the last line (connecting), to many more things. And using its tools for changing the lines weight after the fact... I ink in raster, but seriously considering give a bigger try to vector layers in CSP. It has even quite good solutions for digital painting, as well, some nice behaviors in the oil brushes, even if it does not heavily try to mimic traditional media like Rebelle does. Both its several points perspective system, as its entire 3D perspective system are real time savers, when not drawing buildings and stuff with perspective guides ( I often don't use those).

@@colorwithkurt I think you could achieve this by changing the selection mode to "add to selection" and setting a hotkey to switch from lasso to polyline. You won't lose your selection. In preferences, there's also an option for "switch tool temporarily by pressing and holding shortcut key"

cant wait to see mor stuff in Clip Studio. Im also a Photoshop User for 20+ Years so its hard sometimes because you have to think about stuff again which worked without spending a thought in the Software you are used to. The part about the difference between Masks was a blast for me! A lot of helpfull stuff but for me that was the one i really needed! I would love to see you working through the process of coloring a piece with all the layer modes stuff you regulary do in Photoshop and maybe tell whats different in Clip Studio. Maybe if you start by doing flats because there are helpers for this which could make life harder for the flaters out there in terms of finding a job. It might be too early to ask you for showing ways on how to do it better/easier in Clip Studio than in PS but maybe in the future. Since this is a specialized piece of Software i think there is a lot of stuff to cover which is better for making comics in Clip Studio than in PS. Oh and probably that Reference Layer stuff would be helpfull. Thansk man! Cant wait to see more, stay healthy!

If I were restricted to only one art app ever, CSP is the one that I would choose. It has weaknesses and quirks for sure, but for pure drawing/painting on a pc, can't beat it, especially for the price. I genuinely like it more than Photoshop. I got Manga Studio 4 Debut as a giveaway at convention YEARS ago, enjoyed it for some comic fan art, and then upgraded to Manga Studio 5 when it launched and have been in love with it since. I've actually bought the program multiple times as a gift for friends (especially since it is so frequently on sale) and for myself when I needed it on multiple devices.

If you make the same type of changes to a canvas on a regular basis, like down to the exact same detail (lets say you always have layers set up in a specific way) you can actually use something called an auto action to record and then have the pc do it for you. It helps if ur working with complex 3D models in a time consuming way. For instance I had a massive model that I would duplicate 4 times then on one layer id change it to lines, another layer Id adjust contrast till it was only b&w and then change brightness to opacity, and on and on. Itd take me a while Expecially since each duplicate took forever to copy. I recorded it and only had to sit and wait while the pc did it for me faster. The only negative is it had issues with recording that I removed 3D texture vs kept it for different files, and thats DEEEP in settings

I haven't used CSP extensively, but at first glance I can't seem to be able to edit a selection after the fact. I mean the actual dashed selection line, not what's inside it. In PS you can edit the selection.

with the lasso ALT thing, I use felt pen, enter quick mask, just like in Ps and draw and fill the area I need...it's more steps, but it works for me...than you have the other useful tools, like close and fill, paint unfilled areas (great for corrections) and lasso fill. But I'm missing the ALT hold, it's a great thing to have

    >Paying for Photoshop every month CS6 Forever. (Just dipping my feet into CSP now.) Subscription tools? No way. (okay, only if you use it all day every day for work (which I do not)). Sucks if you didn't buy it back when it was still available though.

I'm NOT paying for Photoshop every month, or, ANY month. But then again, I have an older version of it that I obviously can't upgrade. I started using Manga Studio Pro EX5 about seven or eight years ago, but I have been using Photoshop to create my comic strip since about 1996 when I bought my very first desktop computer. Needless to say, although Photoshop has tools that I am most comfortable with, it is extremely limited in all the things that Clip Studio Paint offers ... except, of course, for these little things that this whole video you've made is here to talk about. Such as the Convert Point Tool which I have used for, well, decades in Photoshop and appears to be unavailable in CSP. To be honest? I absolutely PREFER CSP over Photoshop ... except, again, using Photoshop's color palate menu. This was an excellent tutorial/heads-up on various ways to implement and use tools in CSP. The one thing I am still disappointed about is that there is no Convert Point Tool in CSP. You obviously get a "Thumbs Up" and I have subscribed for all notifications. Thank you, Kurt! Love your work, too!

I find that the feel with the pencil, inking pens and oil brushes are sooooo much better than in Photoshop, that for drawing and painting for me there's not even a doubt... and that while I've been using Photoshop at companies since '95... That said... I do NOT support their take in the iPad. Besides I don't really like that device (size, too small screen, and iOS is very limited, no compatibility with industry apps, no real industry apps there, etc), I deeply dislike subscription models. They've done this for their iPad version, but not for the PC/mac one. Here's hoping they never will . Seems they wont, in the desktop. A legion would leave, if they would. Been a while since the change, and no movement indicating they'd become subscription based.

  • @colorwithkurt

Yeah, it's super cheap though. Paying $25/year for an app you use daily to generate income (in professional cases) isn't unrealistic or unfair in my opinion.

@@colorwithkurt Very little money, indeed. I pay quite more in (purchase-only) other apps, some of those I don't end up fully using indeed. The problem with that kind of thing is that it is how it all starts... I'm getting constant suggestions to get a cloud membership while being in the desktop, in the C. Studio panel... And yes, this contradicts what I just said in the above comment... but truth to be told, I "hope" they won't do it on the desktop. But I don't _know_ what's their plan. At some point a company offers the always-updated version in the desktop as a monthly subscription, first as the recommended but not only option, and before you know, then there's the subscription-only situation. And monthly subscriptions are known to go up at the the vendor's discretion, besides locking you down in several ways. I mean, I'm against the system, not that particular quantity. So much That I'd probably move 100% back to krita and Affinity Photo, which I already do for a number of projects, for a "just in case" way of doing I have since always, and 'cause I'm used to context changes and adapting to different UIs, would not be a biggie if in CSP go that way of the dodo (as IMO, ppl would thing : "to go subscription I can just rent Adobe, the industry standard..."). The "not all the eggs in a basket " concept. However, for now CSP is the king in many ways. I just don't get to be too dependent of any app, not even CSP, if it would go into a business style I don't support (it hasn't...yet).

The problem i see is that all the plugins are locked behind EX version paywall, there are couple of unique auto coloring ones, and more actually useful ones And they are not free as well i think, so you're paying $300+ for the truly full version But the biggest problem with CSP is.. NO liquify That is a killer for me and so many other people who don't split lineart into separate layers from coloringq, or have no lineart at all Maybe after they implement it, it will be a usable alternative to PS But who knows how much we have to wait, if they ever do it
