This video is all about how we place our hands on the holds when we are climbing and how me might have created some bad habits and how we can get rid of them, aswell as the most dangerous bad habit for climbing.

    In case anyone had a hard time understanding the last part, straight arms are good, but don't be a limp noodle on the wall! Keep your core and back muscles engaged so that your shoulders aren't in front of your face. Keep them behind you, sort of how you sit in a normal upright posture.

    That’s a good summary. The only point I would dispute is that most people don’t sit in normal upright posture. But point taken.

    Thanks dude, I thought I was being a pro 're-adjusting my grip' while climbing, but yeah makes a lot of sense that that's a bad habit, also explains why better climbers make things look much smoother. Wasn't really aware of myself having that issue.

    One of the biggest tips I was given when I started was to try and stand on the foot which is on the same side as the hand I'm moving. So for instance if I'm moving the right hand I'll stand on the right foot. There are of course exceptions to the rule, but most of the time it works really well for me.

With the tips from foot positioning to grabbing holds in just a week I have done USA grading top rope 5.10c to now being able to complete 5.11a and now 5.11b's. Also for bouldering I was at V1-2 and now being able to do V3-4's. Crazy to think how just technique and slight changes can make you better. Thanks for the Great videos.

    Thank you for the tips! I do hang a lot because I'm brand new and simply don't have the back and arm strength to support myself and keep good posture. I hadn't really thought about it as being bad for my joints and ligaments before. It's probably extra bad for me too because I naturally have very loose elbow joints. So I will try to remember to keep my muscles engaged more and not allow my arms and shoulders to rag doll. I am going to tire out much faster that way. :( But an injury would keep me from climbing at all so I had better try hard! :)

    The last piece of advice will be most helpful to me. I have had 2 damaged shoulders for a while now and they seem to be getting worse now that I am climbing more. I have noticed when my arms are stretched out and my shoulders are up by my neck that my joints hurt so I usually avoid the bouldering and climbing that causes that and even doing hang boarding. Now I know I am doing it wrong and will try this next session and see how it helps. I know it will. I thought it was just me getting older and my weight gain. Thanks for the advice!

    +jc3t Hi! yeah try keep the shoulders away from the neck at all times, i explain this alot in episode 3, the reason why we have a hard time to climb with an engage back in the beginning is because we have not yet developed a really strong back or we have learned bad form, but watch episode 3 and you should get the insight too it :)

    Started climbing a few months ago, these tips helped me to climb longer and similar. But my coach says says that it is over when your legs fall out, you lose too much energy just sitting on hands and trying to reposition the legs. When you climb on a tilted wall you should pull your entire body towards it, because then the pressure is equal on legs and the hands, so the downwards drag is easier to manage. It is also crucial to position the legs, because they hold 80 percent of your weight. Also use magnesium, but not too much, because then it decreases the friction and you want the opposite to happen. You have to move your arms and legs equally, at an order. For example left arm, right leg, right arm, left leg. If you move the legs and arms in the same time, all the pressure will be redirected to only one arm and one leg, and by moving one by one it will be a whole load easier to overcome. You should connect your arms on a single hand hold as much as possible. When you are doing that make sure you leave enought space for the other arm, and don't put your finger over the other hand because it decreases friction. Same thing with legs.

    bad-its letting your back relax and let your shoulder roll up to your neck and feel that you are tensing your neck. The good way it to engage your back and getting your shoulders away from the neck and feeling its loos :)

    best tip ever man! I have dislocated my shoulder doing a lot of sports; and I dislocated my shoulder while climbing the other day, because I let my shoulder loose in a difficult position, and it went all the way up my neck and then it popped out and I fell down into a heap and writhed in pain until I could pop it back in. Luckily I'm fine after some rest, but I learned the lesson the hard way.

    Cool! Thanks for the video. I've actually been told many many times that I am climbing too much with my arms and I guess it is coming from a combination of 'mini pull-ups' and lack of back engagement. With that said, I've also been told to rest my weight on my feet WITH stretched out arms. The logic behind it being that your legs are stronger than your arms and that your skeleton can hold your body weight longer than your arms.... That sounds awfully counter-intuitive though and you end up with that cramped up / "frog-like" position. Your approach makes a lot more sense to me. Oh and thanks for the positive energy too. I'm off again to the gym now. :)

    Doesn't engaging one's back lead to bent elbows and therefore inefficient climbing technique? I feel like if I engage my back too much I end up pulling myself toward the wall with bent arms - this is bad technique, right? Because then you're not using your feet as much.

    Huh, I've been climbing for a while now and apparently I am also guilty of not only re-adjusting my hand holds, but also relaxing my back. I've been taught to leave my arms straight because it saves energy. Is it always bad to relax your upper back? I've noticed it saves so much energy. Especially twisting the torso instead of bending at the elbow when reaching for a high hold seems ok to me - anyone disagree??

Also, about the last tip, I'm wondering then why do "they" (meaning other climbers giving me advice) say that you should have relaxed arms, instead of always being in a half pull up position therefore tensed up, in order to save energy and be more efficient. Do you have a take on that?

  • @n1t21r3

    @n1t21r3

    I don't think he means a half pull up - more like, make sure your back and arm muscles are engaged and ready to move otherwise you're putting a lot of pressure on your ligaments. The feeling of it is a little like a spring board I think. I only starting to learn this through experience as the hanging thing started being more of a hindrance for interesting/more powerful moves (I also developed massive back aches!). Eric is welcome to correct me if I am wrong in my thoughts as I'm no pro or personal trainer!
