This video is all about how we place our hands on the holds when we are climbing and how me might have created some bad habits and how we can get rid of them, aswell as the most dangerous bad habit for climbing.

In case anyone had a hard time understanding the last part, straight arms are good, but don't be a limp noodle on the wall! Keep your core and back muscles engaged so that your shoulders aren't in front of your face. Keep them behind you, sort of how you sit in a normal upright posture.

That’s a good summary. The only point I would dispute is that most people don’t sit in normal upright posture. But point taken.
Thanks dude, I thought I was being a pro 're-adjusting my grip' while climbing, but yeah makes a lot of sense that that's a bad habit, also explains why better climbers make things look much smoother. Wasn't really aware of myself having that issue.

One of the biggest tips I was given when I started was to try and stand on the foot which is on the same side as the hand I'm moving. So for instance if I'm moving the right hand I'll stand on the right foot. There are of course exceptions to the rule, but most of the time it works really well for me.

That's a great tip, I learned it too, changed my climbing for good :D
Hi, I'm a personal trainer and fairly new to climbing. It is so refreshing to hear someone talking about injury prevention and the importance of engagement of other muscles. Keep up the good work and I look forward to learning from your other climbing videos 👍
I’ve been climbing for almost a year now but these tips are so relevant for me! I think I’ve been sagging my shoulders as well and probably the reason why I sustained an injury late last year. Loving this content, thank you!
I'm always readjusting my hands. and my feet. This was a great find! I'm a newbie having only started climbing a couple of months ago. These videos were a great find!!! Thanks for putting this out there for us!!!
Bravo! I find your tutorials very helpful! the difference between the bad and the good example are very very good! you don't overact, instead you pass us the filling of your thoughts. Especially when you talk about breathing, the rhythm of your body really mirrored it out! Thanks!
Just started climbing. And I already know I reposition my hands and go straight legged and armed. Great tips. Will help a lot next time I go to the gym.

+Eric Karlsson Bouldering Update on how it's going. With the tips from foot positioning to grabbing holds in just a week I have done USA grading top rope 5.10c to now being able to complete 5.11a and now 5.11b's. Also for bouldering I was at V1-2 and now being able to do V3-4's. Crazy to think how just technique and slight changes can make you better. Thanks for the Great videos.
These videos are great. Just started out and have kept coming back to these videos. Great to identify the mistakes to target and to train out of poor technique. Thanks!
Thanks for these videos, im a new climber and picked out a lot of things to focus on with my technique!
Thank you all for taking the time to make these videos :) Very good job!
Great tips. I have only just started climbing (went yesterday for the third time) and I am making so many of the mistakes you mentioned in this clip, especially the constant readjusting of the hand grip. Thanks for uploading this vid Eric.
3:40 damn thank you so much for pointing that out...when I took my first climbing course no one was talking about that and all of us did that. They only said, straight long arms that's it, we were hanging like dead flesh on our ligaments
Absolute beginner here.. loved the approach of showing the bad form and then the correct one.. the concern about the relaxed back is an absolute eye opener.. (also, Episode 1 for foot positioning was very very helpful as well).. Wish i could be where you train (my forearms give away the quickest.. i do decent weight training though.. still).. Thanks again.
Great video. Quick and informative. Thanks
Thanks for the tips really good stuff keep it up
These tips are gold! Thanks man
this was a great video. For sure watch the first episode also. Really helped me.

I recently noticed that my climbing technique is super sloppy but I wasn't exactly sure what I was doing wrong. Turns out, I rely on a lot of these bad habits..But now I know how to fix it! Thanks for the awesome tutorial!
great tip man. I'm starting to learn how to climb and this is very useful.
Hey, I have had shoulder pain. So I came back to this video for the shoulder part (3:30->). I think it is the single most important thing. Thanks for sharing the video and everyone, be mindful of your posture to avoid any injuries!
This video series is great!
Thanks, I've had a few injuries since starring out so good to know where I'm going qrong!
Dude, this is really helpful. Thanks!
Great video(s). Thanks!

Thank you for the tips! I do hang a lot because I'm brand new and simply don't have the back and arm strength to support myself and keep good posture. I hadn't really thought about it as being bad for my joints and ligaments before. It's probably extra bad for me too because I naturally have very loose elbow joints. So I will try to remember to keep my muscles engaged more and not allow my arms and shoulders to rag doll. I am going to tire out much faster that way. :( But an injury would keep me from climbing at all so I had better try hard! :)

Very helpful and insightful videos for people that have been climbing for some time themselves, thanks alot! :) I recognize these mistakes while bouldering myself but seeing them actually performed in an extreme way by other people is really eye opening on some false behaviours i adopted myself ( like relying too much on your strength and accepting a bad form etc.) Overall great video series ( also enjoyed your more entertaining/vlog-style videos too, you seem to have alot of fun while training). Cheers

Great tips for a beginner like me! I immediately understood everything you were saying as I fell victim to all of these issues lol
Wow that was a super helpful video, thank you! :D This helped me recognise a lot of things that I want to keep an eye out for next time I go bouldering now. I really love your channel, you have a really nice, relaxed way of talking :) Usually climbing tutorials and videos are very "sterile", there's no jokes or personality in them, but this is the opposite! +Lemons and Love Thanks! Super happy that you found it helpful :D
The last piece of advice will be most helpful to me. I have had 2 damaged shoulders for a while now and they seem to be getting worse now that I am climbing more. I have noticed when my arms are stretched out and my shoulders are up by my neck that my joints hurt so I usually avoid the bouldering and climbing that causes that and even doing hang boarding. Now I know I am doing it wrong and will try this next session and see how it helps. I know it will. I thought it was just me getting older and my weight gain. Thanks for the advice!
These are great!
oh man, so guilty of this my last time climbing! (just started).. thanks for the tips!
now I understand how limited is the climbing gym I go. Here everyone is by themself. Nobody teaches to newbies. Thanks for your videos

I am always readjusting my arms, without even realising it, thanks for the tip :)
Still didn't get the last tip... Do you mean to always make your hand muscles work? I heard that it's better to keep your hands straight- saving energy and prevent tiredness. Thanks
Hey! Thank you a lot! I am recently giving climb lessons to begginers but I am a begginer too. Your videos are helping me a lot!
I like that I always think on Adam ondra on silence on the hand reajustment thing because he does it :')
Do you have any tips on keeping your back engaged while climbing? I never realized that this was a problem until you pointed it out

+jc3t Hi! yeah try keep the shoulders away from the neck at all times, i explain this alot in episode 3, the reason why we have a hard time to climb with an engage back in the beginning is because we have not yet developed a really strong back or we have learned bad form, but watch episode 3 and you should get the insight too it :)
Started climbing a few months ago, these tips helped me to climb longer and similar. But my coach says says that it is over when your legs fall out, you lose too much energy just sitting on hands and trying to reposition the legs. When you climb on a tilted wall you should pull your entire body towards it, because then the pressure is equal on legs and the hands, so the downwards drag is easier to manage. It is also crucial to position the legs, because they hold 80 percent of your weight. Also use magnesium, but not too much, because then it decreases the friction and you want the opposite to happen. You have to move your arms and legs equally, at an order. For example left arm, right leg, right arm, left leg. If you move the legs and arms in the same time, all the pressure will be redirected to only one arm and one leg, and by moving one by one it will be a whole load easier to overcome. You should connect your arms on a single hand hold as much as possible. When you are doing that make sure you leave enought space for the other arm, and don't put your finger over the other hand because it decreases friction. Same thing with legs.
Hey, pretty interesting, I'm learning a lot thanks to you. But someone can explain again, the last one. It is not obvious, and I dont feel the difference between the bad and the good posture ?

bad-its letting your back relax and let your shoulder roll up to your neck and feel that you are tensing your neck. The good way it to engage your back and getting your shoulders away from the neck and feeling its loos :)

best tip ever man! I have dislocated my shoulder doing a lot of sports; and I dislocated my shoulder while climbing the other day, because I let my shoulder loose in a difficult position, and it went all the way up my neck and then it popped out and I fell down into a heap and writhed in pain until I could pop it back in. Luckily I'm fine after some rest, but I learned the lesson the hard way.

I started climbing a few months ago and just started bouldering 2 weeks ago. I develop blisters on my hands fairly quickly and they begin to hurt. Do you have any advice on that? (Btw are you from Sweden?) Thanks :)

Keep on climbing. After some time your skin will get hard enough that you won't get blisters anymore (don't remember when was the last time I had them). :)
relaxing back : it's me for sure ; I need your coaching
is there any video on engaging your back while climbing? im a beginner and totally guilty of just letting my shoulders engage. i read that i shouldn’t be using my hands and focusing on my feet, but then i just let my arms hang there. i feel like i do have to use my arms but engage my back and core, and most of my power comes from my legs? unless i’m wrong lol
Thanks for the great video. One question on the last point, I'm climbing now with my hand straight, I began to understand what you said about the "shoulder problem". But could you be more specific on how to engage your back. Thanks.

from what i saw, it helps to push your shoulders back a little bit, which automatically engages your back to keep you from falling.
helpful, big time
I am having pains in the left arm right after i finish climbing a route, could it be my hand position like you explain in your video ?
Cool! Thanks for the video. I've actually been told many many times that I am climbing too much with my arms and I guess it is coming from a combination of 'mini pull-ups' and lack of back engagement. With that said, I've also been told to rest my weight on my feet WITH stretched out arms. The logic behind it being that your legs are stronger than your arms and that your skeleton can hold your body weight longer than your arms.... That sounds awfully counter-intuitive though and you end up with that cramped up / "frog-like" position. Your approach makes a lot more sense to me. Oh and thanks for the positive energy too. I'm off again to the gym now. :)

Doesn't engaging one's back lead to bent elbows and therefore inefficient climbing technique? I feel like if I engage my back too much I end up pulling myself toward the wall with bent arms - this is bad technique, right? Because then you're not using your feet as much.
I would have continued to make the same mistakes if I didn't start watching your videos... :o thank you!
same
Relaxed back is for comps, so you're not wasting energy when it's not needed, but for training it's like you said, engage the muscles.
@YoureInSilico
7 жыл бұрын
Aha, so it is a legit technique! I was wondering this. But isn't it almost impossible to straighten your arms without relaxing your back? I feel like engaging one's back is going to teach inefficient climbing technique.
Can you do a video on how to warm up
Huh, I've been climbing for a while now and apparently I am also guilty of not only re-adjusting my hand holds, but also relaxing my back. I've been taught to leave my arms straight because it saves energy. Is it always bad to relax your upper back? I've noticed it saves so much energy. Especially twisting the torso instead of bending at the elbow when reaching for a high hold seems ok to me - anyone disagree??
@Moiez101
7 жыл бұрын
Pseudo Symmetry you can still keep your arms straight while keeping your back tight and engaged.
Can you do one on figure 4
what if your hands legit about to slip then do you re-adjust?
@EricKarlsson
8 жыл бұрын
oh then go for it for sure, its more of training away bad habits :)
Regarding the warning at 3:31 ... often when I watch videos of Alex Megos I think his shoulders are so close to his ears and this must be cruel to the shoulders, but I guess his shoulders are stronger than all ours together :-D
What does it mean to use your entire back? How do I know if I am or not?
Hi! I’m Taiwanese boulder,
lol so your tip for good hand placement is good foot placement? love it. Also, about the last tip, I'm wondering then why do "they" (meaning other climbers giving me advice) say that you should have relaxed arms, instead of always being in a half pull up position therefore tensed up, in order to save energy and be more efficient. Do you have a take on that?
@n1t21r3
7 жыл бұрын
I don't think he means a half pull up - more like, make sure your back and arm muscles are engaged and ready to move otherwise you're putting a lot of pressure on your ligaments. The feeling of it is a little like a spring board I think. I only starting to learn this through experience as the hanging thing started being more of a hindrance for interesting/more powerful moves (I also developed massive back aches!). Eric is welcome to correct me if I am wrong in my thoughts as I'm no pro or personal trainer!
