Ever since traveling for me meant to be active. I was taking on new outdoor challenges every year from skiing in the Alps to rafting in South America, Biking trips in North America and several multi-day trekking adventures in places like Patagonia, Peru or Kyrgyzstan. This year I was ready for the next step: climbing one of the seven summits. When G Adventures asked me to become part of their Wanderers program I saw my chance to take on the highest mountain in Africa as one of their brand ambassadors….but little did I know how hard this endeavour would be….
Unlike other trips this one started actually 5 months before the first day of trekking…I worked on my fitness, changed my diet and did a lot of research on Mt. Kilimanjaro. I decided to take on the Lemosho route which is 56 kilometers long and takes altogether 8 days - my decision was based on 2 reasons: one was the fact that the itinerary of this route is the best for acclimatization of the body to the high altitude and the resulting high summit success rate (which is at 96% for G Adventures), the other reason is the beauty of the route which is often described as the most picturesque and spectacular of all popular routes.
Located in North East Tanzania Mount Kilimanjaro is with 5895m the highest mountain in Africa which makes it one of the seven summits. Apart from that it is also the highest free standing mountain in the world. Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano with three three volcanic cones, "Kibo", "Mawenzi", and „Shira“. The highest point is located on Kibo - after the independence of Tanzania it was named Uhuru Peak in 1964 - which is Kiswhali and translates into „freedom Peak“.
-About my Cooperation with G Adventures-
For many years I was searching for a suitable partner who offers outdoor tours which align with my style of traveling as well as my values. After many meetings I’m glad I found this partner with G Adventures who offer many adventurous tour packages for travelers like me…but who also care about the environment and local communities in order to execute sustainable tourism. I forced this cooperation because I like the products and the philosophy of the company. Nevertheless all opinions, recommendations and views are my own.

The real heroes are the porters. Notice how huge the packs are that they carry on their backs and shoulders and, yes, on their heads, yet how quickly, you can say effortlessly, they climb the trails. I bet you wouldn't hear any "Steve-like" panting out of them. :) The other heroic sights are the beautiful scenery, for level after level, plus the determination and the joy of accomplishment of the climbers. And best of all are the teaser shots as the summit reveals itself. The way you reserved this hidden treat for us was very nicely handled, Steve. How you're coping with altitude sickness shows in your face, Steve, around your eyes. At first, I thought it was simply bad lighting. You're a strong man to have made it through this.

ha! That's one of the first things I realized and my respect for them grew each day seeing what they are doing there (that's also why we loved calling them G-Fighters instead of porters). Trekkers like me go up there one time and celebrate the achievement while the porters are the true kili heroes. Our team was simply amazing and I hope to have captured that apart from my own story. Thank you so much for your nice words, that means a lot to me!

Bravo, bravo standing innovation congratulations. Very well filmed and edited. I saw Kilimanjaro 35 years ago from Moshi when my dad took us on a saffari with a Datsun that had only 20cm clearance. Overheated 4 times in Serengeti but the saffari was epic. When I saw the snow on Kilimanjaro I could not understand how it was possible to have snow at the equator. I was 5-6 year old at the time. May be one day I'll try to climb it. This documentary is a great inspiration. Thanks

Dear Steve, thank you so much for uploading this amazing video. When I visited Amboseli/Kenya in 2003 I told my wife that I would like to hike Mt Kilimanjaro one day. Now, 15 years later, I have decided to do it. I will also walk the Lemosho Route end of January 2019. Just 2 months to go, and honestly I start getting a bit nervous. Videos like yours confirm that it was the right decision. I am aware that this will probably the hardest thing I have ever done, but I will be ready for this challenge. For preparation I am running, riding my MTB and hiking in the nearer area, wheras there are no mountains here. Thanks again! Karsten

Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Fuji are two mountains I've climbed. Both of them were exhilarating experiences, each in it's own way. They are not really difficult to climb if your body can adjust to the heigth. But the last day on Mt. Kilimanjaro was tough. Invest in an extra acclimatation day and you will increase your chances of succeeding.

Excellent video, especially that you presented us the people "behind the scene" which made possible a normal being without any mountain experience, to climb to almost 6000m! I was mostly impressed by that GFighter; he was so dedicated to learn and work, that I'm sure he'll become a CEO guide in short time.

Oh my word, I am going up Kili on this same route; Lemosho Western Breach! But I am doing 6 other multi day hikes here on South Africa to acclimatize in addition to trail running and ultra marathons. Can’t wait to be back in Tanzania! The last time I was there was work

3 times! Wow! With your record I would like to ask advice as you obviously have seniority. I am an athletic 18 year old kid and am wondering what your training program was like. Would you recomend training for and running a marathon before ascending? At what point did you know you were physically fit enough for the climb? For some context I live 2000 ish feet above sea level and am in close proximity to trails. I am from the northern US so i am used to cold weather and snow.
