    Such beautiful spot. I hiked a steep mountain and had to stop for breathing a lot! It wasnt even fun after awhile but wanting to get to the end was just nagging at me. Next time i wont start! Just wander and no beginning so that means no end anyway and stop when its enough already! Id sit in the snow and take pics of hikers going by and send them to the team leader to pass out. Maybe bring one of my dogs and her bed… go down when bored or too cold. Get warm! Congrats to the two teams. Great weather. Safe hike. Beautiful

    Li-Lan Cheng this is another outstanding video, just as good as your Everest one. Well done on your summit. Great vision of the skiier! You must have wondered what the heck was going on. Great vision also of your descent of the ice cliff, and I loved your shots of Everest and Lhotse. I have a question though - I have noticed on a few videos of high altitude mountaineering that climbers tend to use oxygen at around about 8,000 m, this is on Khangchenjunga and K2, and I think in your Everest video you started using oxygen at about camp 3 (7,800 m)? Forgive me I might be wrong, this is from memory. My question is, why your team started to use oxygen at a lower altitude? Is it because the mountain has long, steep grades, or is it colder, or is it simply because you can carry more oxygen? Another question, on other large mountains teams tend to ascend a descend a few times, on Everest they will ascend to North Col and descend to ABC, then they will ascend to camp 2 and back again to ABC before the summit push. I was wondering if you did that to acclimatise? The video only shows you going straight up in about three consecutive days. Well done again! Keep the videos coming of your future expeditions.

  • @li-lancheng2535

    @li-lancheng2535

    7 жыл бұрын

    Janine Haese thanks. For climbing these 8000m peaks, most people start using oxygen at around 7000-7500m. That's where your body really begins to struggle and the risk of high altitude sickness increases dramatically. Of course the very few exceptional people can go all the way up without oxygen. Different climbers decide to start at different levels mainly based on their judgment of their own strength and stamina. During my Cho Oyu climb, I wasn't very confident about myself and bought an extra bottle to start at C2 at 7100m. By the Everest climb, I had done more strenuous training and felt better, so I was without oxygen until 7500m while most of my teammates started at 7000m. Yes, we also did acclimatization trips back and forth a few times, but I cut out most of the footage for that portion so as not to bore the viewers.

    Hey Li-Lan Cheng, I am a marathoner and i run about 8-9 miles a day for many years now, ive done ultrathons of up to 80km before as well. I just wanted to ask, how do i know if i am in shape to climb Cho oyu or Everest?, i have done some high altitude treks of up to 5000m but nothing above that. How do i train for climbs like this?, i have a good endurance and strength as a runner but how do i train for climbs?

  • @li-lancheng2535

    @li-lancheng2535

    7 жыл бұрын

    Asap Anon you probably have enough endurance for an 8000m climb. And if you have trekked at 5000 for several days, you probably can deal with higher altitude. An 8000m climbs gives you enough time to acclimatize before the final summit push. But to gain experience and learn how your body deals with altitude, you should climb a few peaks at 6000-7000m. You can do Kilimanjaro at 5900 and Aconcagua at 6900, and join a team that takes you to north col on the north side of Everest, which is 7000m. As for training, you should do hill climbing or stair climbing with a load of 50-60lb (22-27kg). The website by the climbing company Alpine Ascents has good recommendations for training for specific mountains. I more or less followed them. Just before my Everest climb, I could carry 26kg to climb 340 stories (about 1200m) in two hours and for two days in a row. Then I felt comfortable carrying my gears on the mountain.

    I agree that the crowd and the wait takes a lot of fun away. But it’s Everest, so a lot of people go for the bragging rights, even though there are many other interesting mountains to climb. Teams tried to coordinate and spread out the final summit push, but everyone had access to the same weather forecast and wanted to take advantage of the good weather window. The result is that you have 300+ people summiting on one day and hardly anyone on the next day.

  • @li-lancheng2535

    The route from c1 to c2 is the longest stretch including the ice cliff half way up. It's entirely above the snow line and climbed without oxygen. So it's physically most exhausting. The route above the ice cliff changes every year depending on the snow conditions, and with the earthquake this year, it's anyone's guess what it will be like when you get there. I was climbing the north col on Everest when the earthquake happened and narrowly missed the collapse of a big ice cliff. I have friends who will be on the Chinese team this year. If your team provides oxygen starting at c3, I recommend buying an extra bottle to start using it from c2. It makes the climb from c2 to c3 quite easy and short, 4 hours, preserving your energy for the summit push.

    Oxygen is a protection to your lung and to your brain. As gloves are a protection to your hands and boots to your foot. Why dont you try to do that without boots or gloves? Bullshit. If you want a "purist" climbing of a 8000m, try to do that in knickers only. Any other protection is a doping. Auxiliary oxygen is as valid as gloves boots and gore-tex.
