Climbing Hidden Trad Classics In The Lake District | Climbing Daily Ep.1182
Katy Whittaker has been championing Lake District climbing, introducing rarely climbed routes to the community. Before the Arc'teryx Big Mountain Weekend kicked off, we went climbing with Charlie Woodburn and Katy to see what Lake District climbing is all about.
The Lakeland Revival revolves around encouraging people to get out trad climbing on the hidden classics of the Lakes. Traditional climbing, especially in this part of the country has played a huge role in the development of climbing as we know today.

Who's getting out on the Trad this summer??

Sadly here in Texas it's the offseason for outdoors because it's too flipping hot, especially on the one trad spot near me that is granite that gets 10*F hotter than the ambient. Thinking of moving to CO soon to get away from the oppressive summers and to have a literal lifetime of climbing to enjoy.

Esk Buttress: Square chimney & Medusa wall next....I did it in 1983 - only forty years ago....
We have the exact same rock in the Washington Cascades; we call it "Rhino". In the 80's I put up a lot of trad routes that didn't get any traffic as the gear tends to be manky and the climbing a bit cryptic (but super fun). Once I started bolting it as sport climbing it became very popular and stays quite clean.
This looks insanely beautiful! And what an amazing way to start trad climbing!

Gail Hookailo it was breathtaking 😁
Amazing video. Getting me super psyched for trad!
Charlie Woodburn did the direct finish to Dawes' Gaia at Black Rocks. Charlie's route is the harder of the 2.
👏👏 Excellent! We will be in this area on holiday in several weeks from now. Do you have a guide service you recommend? Thank you for any information.
no confusion to me why it's not popular anymore ! There's nowhere to park anymore and if there is its been changed to crazy money just park ! everyone just go's indoors 😩

Honister pass is the answer you were looking for i suspect
"Trad" indeed?! E1 not really what i would consider a grade representative of Lakes. Were are those Diff -VS routes which make up the Real heritage of the area? Yes i have climbed in the Lakes, i'm a Local climber.
Trad climbing? Is that looking at a rock face and saying,"I'll climb that"? Or is it something more arcane? If you are not 'Trad' climbing what are you doing?

Trad climbing is when you put your own gear into the rock for protection, little metal nut looking things or little gears called cams! It's different from sport climbing where there are metal bolts put into the wall that you clip your rope to! Trad climbing is becoming less popular I guess because sport climbing is less time consuming as you don't have to stop and put your own protection in the wall..... and most places in Europe are predominantly sport climbing :)
