CLIMBING A GIANT ROCK IN GUATAPÉ, COLOMBIA (EL PEÑOL TRAVEL VLOG) | Eileen Aldis
In this vlog we climb a monolith called En Peñol located near the town of Guatapé, Colombia. Click below for more info and subscribe here: bit.ly/2uEcNjZ!

El Peñol is a giant rock known as 'la piedra más grande de Colombia' (the biggest stone in Colombia). It weighs 66 million tonnes and contains granite and quartz. The first documented climb was in 1954 when three men took five days to reach the top. Nowadays, it takes 740 steps to reach the very top of the man-made tower at the summit. We found that the weather in this part of Colombia changes every twenty minutes or so - we saw both the sun and rain during our climb. The clouds lifted enough at the top for us to enjoy the gorgeous view of the surrounding lakes and landscape. You'll notice what looks like a 'GI' written on the northern face of the rock. The monolith is situated between two towns, Guatapé and El Peñol, and each has fought over ownership over the years. One day the people of Guatapé decided to settle it once and for all by writing 'Guatapé' in huge letters. By the time they had finished the 'G' and the first vertical line of the 'U' the people of El Peñol had taken notice and assembled to stop it. All that remains is an unfinished name and a part of local history that hasn't washed away.

I loved that place!! It's so beautiful. And it looks like you got great weather.... unlike us lol.
I understand the “lakes” below are in some way man-made, a flooded village is under the water. You can see some of the buildings in the view from above underwater.

@@EileenAldis The “old guatapé” was flooded in the purpose to build the dam, it now lies underwater. “new guatapé” ,the town you visited, was built for the people that had to leave their homes in old guatapé. New guatapé is somewhat a replica of old guatapé.

@EileenAldis

Ooh good question! For Mexico I'd say Mexico City which stole my heart ❤️. For Colombia it's a tough call between Cartagena and Salento. Cartagena is stunning, on the water, historic, romantic, and charming. You'll find beautiful architecture and warm waters to swim in at the beach. Salento, however, is also charming, located in the Andes mountains, full of colour, chill, and surrounded by coffee farms. The temperature is cooler there as well than in Cartagena. I hope that's helpful!
Please enjoy my country, it's amazing having you both right here, please visit "Caño Cristales" and take a little piece of my nation in your heart...

I have been to El Penol Several times as an American as my wife is from the Envigado & Antioquia area her family owns property on the lake and I was told that the Rock is not Volcanic at all but it is a meteor. There are many other ejection rocks and patterns in the area which is scattered around the Caldera. So it is in a volcanic area but my understanding is that the rock is actually from outer space not inner...! But who knows. The man we talked to was from the University which said scientists have found iron all over the rock which usually means meteor not volcano......I do remember felling the solid iron all over the wall surface as we walked up and down . Did you get your information from the locals or the scientists? Aerial views show a distinct ejection pattern of huge rocks all over the area possibly from the ELE that occurred in the Yucatan or Gulf of Mexico. ELE Extinction Level Event. That particular ELE was called the Chicxulub crater (thought to have killed the Dinosaurs) and El Penol was a huge piece separated from the meteor from the collision with the earth. May have mixed with volcanic matter and other bits here and there....? Who knows. I wasn't there so what do I know. The strange plant is thought to have come from outer space found no where else on earth? Looking at the ejection range coming from the center of the Gulf of Mexico El Penol is just inside the circle of the meteor splash. Here is the link to several Earth Impact craters. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cc/Earth_Impact_Database_world_map.svg Regardless, El Penol is a strange rock sticking up in the ground in Columbia inside a Volcanic Caldera.Did not want to burst any bubbles but the locals may not know or the scientists are drinking too much "Aguardiente"...if you know what I mean. One of he two.....Nice video. Brought back good memories. I cannot imagine what kind of energy would have occurred to move a rock that DAMN BIG!

GUATAPE IS A BEUTIFUL TOWN NEAR TO MEDELLIN THE ROCK IN GUATAPE IS CALLED "EL PEÑOL"
@enriquecampos3001

Yes, is beautiful..
Hi Eileen FYI The Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir is a Colombian reservoir located in eastern Antioquia of Empresas Públicas de Medellín. For its construction it was necessary to demolish (literally) the urban area of El Peñol, as well as several rural homes, both in El Peñol and in Guatapé; 1 in fact, it covers a quarter of the territory of Guatapé.2 Built in two stages (the first completed in 1972 and the second in 1979), is the Colombian reservoir with the highest regulation.3 Water sports are practiced daily in this place, as well as rides in motor boats, jet skis and yacht. It is the most extensive lacustrine body of Antioquia and one of the largest lentic ecosystems in Colombia. This was very controversial at the time, and the people from el penol did not want to move, but at the end they all moved out.

How do they get the garbage from all the tourists down every day? I noticed the garbage can at the top. Do they have someone who climbs all the way up to get it and all the way down again, banging the can against every stair? How do they get the can back up? Same way, banging against every stair?
