dude, I love your videos, but this time you've made a big mistake when talking about the flight models. As a pilot myself, I can assure you this series of sims have the most amazing and realistic flight dynamics I've ever seen. Dont compare it to DCS, as that sim has unrealistically difficult flight models on WWII modules. Everyone thinks that more difficult = more realistic. WRONG. I showed this sim to a lot of pilot friends and all of them said "OMG how realisitc" anyway, keep it up

Hi! I'm an old IL-2 Forgotten Battles user (and so on up to 1946, of course) and now it's time to pick up a new WWII combat flightsim. DCS is too expensive and it seems incomplete, bugged. The real choose is between IL-2 BoX and IL-2 CoD. I live very much the more complex engine management of CoD, but BoX seems... better, at least graphically. In your hopinion, what is, of the two, the one with better (more realistic) flight and damage model? Thanks.

IL-2 BoX is more up to date, and graphically superior. The flight models are more heavily researched and feel great and rewarding... unique per aircraft. I would however mention that BoX is limited to the Eastern front moving to western European theaters later on. If you want the Battle of Britain go CoD. If you want a nice flight sim with a great playerbase and multiplayer BoX is more suitable however CoD is still very much alive! Good Luck. o7

I agree. Plus people just assume that because it's expensive af, it has to be accurate. Well, there are videos on YT of real-world Yak pilots talking about the flight model. There are stories of WW2 pilots describing flight characteristics of the original FW190 that came out for DCS a while ago and apparently it was nothing like what they made it in the sim. SO there you go.

I love all the eye candy of the Great Battles series. The weather, the water on the wind screen, all those reflextions but compared to CloD it looks cartoonish somehow. A big plus for CloD is the complex engine management and "real" autopilots. I've learnt in CloD so much about engines, magnetos, manifold pressure, proppitch and VFR navigation.

If you just watched this video and you are genuinely curious as to whether or not this game is worth checking out, please read on. There are certainly problems with this game, but in my opinion only two of the points made in this video are valid (the AI is bad, and there are oddities with ground terrain). The other issues referenced are either laughably minor (difficult to bind keys - really?), unintelligible (lack of fidelity with regard to flyable aircraft), or straight up false (flight model is unrealistic/not difficult, graphics are bad at low altitude, damage model is bad/exaggerated). Why didn't this guy mention the sound issues between version 4.312 and 4.53? Or the breaking changes for map makers in Blitz (lack of rearm and refuel, broken stats, bugs with game object events)? All of these issues are being actively worked on by the good folks at TFS. Another major update (Tobruk) is on the horizon, and it looks really good! I came across this game approximately a year ago and have been playing it heavily ever since. Why? Because after doing some research on what the best WWII flight combat sim is in terms of PvP and realism, this is it. It's not arcade-ish like War Thunder, and there are more than 4 people playing it like DCS Normandy. If the idea of a challenging air combat sim with a steep learning curve is exciting to you, then you owe it to yourself to check this out. One more thing - the community surrounding this game is simply amazing. I have been playing online games for 23 years and the people in this community are hands down the friendliest and most helpful lot I have ever come across in an online community (www.theairtacticalassaultgroup.com). If you're interested in learning more about this game, go to that website, join their forums, and say hello! People are always willing to jump on Teamspeak and show you the ropes. I hope to see you in the skies!

Bill Koenig perhaps he didn't reference 4.312 because he didn't play it. From what I understand he bought Blitz edition fresh. I might be wrong. As for referencing things which TF broke in the latest patch, I would have thought that is the last thing clod fans would want him advertising.. The official website for Team Fusion Simulations is www.teamfusionsimulations.com btw, not ATAG ;)

You are questioning why I am advertising problems with the game? Because I am being honest. There are issues, they just aren't the ones mentioned in the video. And I am aware of the website for TFS. I referenced the ATAG site because I was talking about the community of folks that play the game in multiplayer mode, and the community is most active on the ATAG forums.

Bill Koenig It’s not that it’s the most active, it’s that it is the only one left. All the other servers are gone or going and moved to DCS or BoX (or both) along with most of the squads that made up the community. Some are still left, but it is a shadow of it’s former self. Some of what you are saying right, but it’s time has been and gone and it’s time to move on. Maybe TFS could make something from scratch, it would probably be more worthwhile and could get some backing from the community. I don’t see it happening though.

Laobi, I think you need to revisit this game, also revisit it once TF 5.0 hits the public release button. For me, every takeoff in a tail dragger is a fucking one way kamikaze attack. Landings also feel dangerous, although the fact that I can see the runway relieves me by alot. The flying physics are hard. You can't let go of your joystick as I'm writing this (v4.7) because you will end up as fish food in the british canal. It's so realistic that I even get tired after 2 sorties and go to a local pub to beat some people up because of the PTSD I got from shooting BF110's and JU-88's and seeing the crew's faces as they burned to death on their 18th or 19th year.

Unlike IL-2 BoX at least the bugs are being fixed instead of introducing new ones. IL-2 BoX has a lot of technical debt!! Quite a few features of CloD I'd like to see in BoX such as customised ammo belts, a wings slats ON / OFF option, engine fire extinguishers (BoX is the only Il-2 game that doesn't have them!!), Refuel & Rearm on airfields, Radar, a more detailed damage model like CloD has, a sensible spawning system in multiplayer, etc. More features are added to CloD - Blitz as it progresses. German radio beam blind bombing was added in November on the TWC_Campaign server.

I have being playing or flying Cliffs for years and I have had some great times with my buddy's and flying campaign Sundays with ACG. But you are right in a few things you have said, Cliffs is dated now and if you have a ten year old PC it will have no problem flying it. With the final release of Blitz after an age or maybe (two weeks 😁) the graphics improved but had a load of issues with a game play and after some time TF have worked out the most of the problems. I'm sorry to say I'm not finding it fun anymore and I'm flying BOX a lot more. If I was not a member of ACG cliffs would be deleted of my drive. Even if some of your review is harsh on Cliffs it made me laugh and thanks for that 😁

Thank you very much sir! At the moment there is no decent BoB sim, however IL-2 Great Battles, particularly Battle of Bodenplatte do a great job at the later western theatre. IL2 is a survey sim though, so I call it a WW2 theme park, it's good fun though. DCS WW2 is coming along well, the aircraft are amazing because the CEO of the company who makes DCS is a WW2 aircraft enthusiast who owns and flies a number of aircraft IRL. So, for me the best Spitfire is in DCS.

The best thing to ever happen to CLOD would be for the devs of BOX to completely remake it using BOXs engine and create a series of maps beginning with invasion of France all the way to D-Day meshing with the future Boddenplatte release. It prob wont ever happen, but BOX is great. Graphics are wonderful, FM and DM are excellent and its period specific with historically accurate a/c. It even works when they come out with a new version. If there are bugs they are usually squashed in a matter of days. TF had done a wonderful job, but Blitz was in my opinion was a step backwards. Heck if you look to your 3 or 9 oclock there is some strange bubble effect that is horrible. BOX is the future of WWII flight sims for the near future. CLOD and TF better get Tobruk right or they will go the way of the Dodo.

Clod with TF had a great run but its time to move on. BoX is a great game runs great looks great, fly's great. Time to realize Clod is over and move up to 2018.

Piper78W - Oh yes sure, since BoX is using such a new engine. It's still the RoF engine, not much has changed. I play both sims a lot, but when I compare both, BoX always seems a bit like plastic to me, you know, toy-ish. For me, the landscape graphics in both sims are at a par (although since the last update when that ugly big white bar at the horizon was finally removed, Box has the upper hand here), but the cockpits in Cliffs are much more believable than the toy like appearance in BoX. And while the software damage model is arguably the best ever created for a sim, it's visual representation is more arcadish than even war thunder - Planes can stream liquids and smoke from every position in the plane and every stream is much too big, which looks really silly. Ballistics are non-existent in BoX, Cliffs does a much better job here. In BoX I always feel like shooting lasers with which I can hit planes 600 or more meters away - ridiculous. This is exaggerated by the fact that there is too less dispersion for every gun in the sim. I've teste the FMs in both sims extensively and while both FM's correspond perfectly with published test-data when it comes to climb and level speeds, some of the Russian aircraft - especially the Yaks - loose way too less energy in a turn. I don't know if this was done intentionally (is there a bias?) or if it is a limitation of the engine, but those planes can perform stunts that defy the laws of physics... All around for me and quite a lot of guys in the ACG I've talked to, the feel of being in the air is much more believable in Cliffs than it is in BoX. But BoX has a lot of potential. And thus I agree with you that it is probably the future of WWII simming for years to come. That is mostly because they have paid professionals working on it, not just a bunch of amateurs that take every form of critique as a personal insult...

Completely agree with what you're saying. Like many of the other guys commenting I've been flying Cliffs for 3 years with ACG and Blitz has caused many issues since it was released. I can speak for a majority of the player-base that if it wasn't for ACG I would have stopped playing Cliffs years ago. The constant stuttering, disconnects and server crashes online are a royal pain in the arse. The flight models are OK but sadly yes, the game does seem dated now. I don't want to shit over TF because they have brought life into a game which when released was unplayable however the constant pushbacks of TF 4.5 was the start of the nail in the coffin for cliffs. We heard many times that TF 4.5 would be released "After Xmas" or "In 2 weeks" it became a bit of a joke... Aside from what members of the ATAG community have said, members outside of ATAG didn't get the chance to take part in the testing of the 4.5/blitz patch. A very small number of members form ACG where allowed to test however their feedback was either shot down or just point blank ignored. In short Team Fusion aren't a game development team, they are a band of modders with access to the source code. I'm not going to say everything they have done is terrible because they brought a lot of good into the sim and fixed a lot of problems that 1C left in. I think being banned from ATAG forum just for showing some criticism shows that ATAG or TF don't want to hear any criticism be that constructive or not.

It sometimes feel like a Civil War if I'm honest. It is very much the ATAG way or no other way when it comes to Cliffs and it's sad for people who are just looking for a WW2 sim that they can easily pick up and play (Aside from War Thunder, but that's a whole other kettle of fish). Other groups are definitely second class citizens. Even people like me that think overall it's not a bad game/sim have soured on it simply because of the way things have gone.

Great vid. I enjoy the bouts of critical cynicism, which is warranted, you drop. I fly a King Air C90B IRL, so I can’t speak much to the accuracy of particular aircraft’s flight model accuracy. I’ve been an IL-2 fan boy since a freshmen in college flying 172’s, so I bought it when it came out. I was very disappointed having loved 1946 but was a bit relieved when the Blitz mod dropped. I do love the gun sounds and it has that quality that’s hard to simulate well in sim of altitude spatial orientation and perception. What I mean is, being at 10,000ft in IL-2 CoD feels like 10,000ft to me. The translations between altitudes feel appropriate to me as well. I do, fire it up every once in a while to get my Battle of Britain channel/Dover dog fight fix, but the damage models quickly turn me off. I absolutely love IL-2 BoS/BoM/BoK/Bodenplatte and can’t wait for Normandy. I really feel like the stall and spin thresholds in those titles are excellent in that you can “feel” them, rather than being warped into spin from out of nowhere in others in the name of “realism”. In any aircraft I’ve ever flown, a YAK-52 being the closest to any WW2 plane, I’ve always been able to feel those thresholds approaching and the shudder and wind effects aren’t excessive as in some sims. The cockpit glass and damage models do suck in CoD. In a Spitfire I or Hurricane Mk.1, you will be so tired of spraying .303 British into Heinkels and Junkers that it actually feels tedious. In any WW2 combat flight sim, the firing of weapons should definitely be a highlight and it feels like a chore. You absolutely have to fly an aircraft with cannon, or “shooting down” an enemy plane will be very unsatisfying. I get what they were going for. Sims, (usually casual arcade ones), where one tiny burst of .303 or .50 blows a bomber out of the sky in a huge explosion, feels unrewarding and excessive, so I think they were trying to avoid that but went way too far. On a side note, I read the update notes for IL-2 BoS this week and their damage models are getting crazy detailed and very involved. It’s really great and anyone reading this should definitely grab it and it’s expansions if yo I hadn’t. Order off their website instead of steam, 100% of the $ goes to them and they have Bodenplatte premium for $24.99 USD right now. If they could update their sound design, like their engine and gun sounds, they’d be the undisputed King IMO. Playing IL2-BoS in VR is mind blowing.

The one thing that I recognised here as accurate is the reference to roads disappearing into the sea / railways (only one I've ever seen mind) going up 90 degree inclines) That is indeed a spot on observation. The rest of it though just seems to be someone trying to cram as many sexual references / whore draws anecdotes into a 6 minute piece as possible. The reviewer didn’t rate Cliffs well. I don’t have an issue with that at all, It's just that his reasoning doesn't reflect my own experiences. I've got this and BoS on my hard drive, DCS was on there (the demo) and the X-Plane one too. They are all very good. I’ve still got Rise of Flight kicking about too which is still great fun. Cliffs definitely gets most of my flight time. The theatre and plane set appeals to me more than the others. But I also just prefer it generally. Maybe it’s just a matter of preference. I'd suggest those of you who like flight sims take this review with a pinch of salt and give Cliffs of Dover Blitz a go. (Unless you are not interested in the theatre / plane set). I think the vast majority of you will be pleasantly surprised. Review of the review: Overly scripted, lame humour dished out with the wooden spoon of delivery. Needs work. .

Yep. I'm an ATAG member. It's not relevant to my opinion of this review though and I have no desire at all to get mixed up in the nonsence of intersquad politics. To all of you out there who want to try a Battle of Britain flight sim I'd highly recommend Cliffs Blitz Edition. There are a variety of multiplayer servers. ATAG, ACG, Warbirds of Prey, and Leadfarm if you fancy a spot of low stress gunnery practice. All will be happy to have you. Or if you don't fancy multiplayer, play single player. Bottom line is play the game not the squad. Unless that's the kind of drama you are looking for.

All I really want to know at this point is whether the game will actually run on my PC. As someone who bought the original release version (at full price, I might add) I guess I'm still traumatized. The very first YT-videos I ever made and uploaded were about this game and its first few official patches. Reading my comments from back then makes me cringe today, since I obviously tried to brush the utter lack of playability under the rug ... when the game still was a total slide-show in most circumstances. Having watched some of the recent videos from multiplayer-sessions, I guess I'll give it another try. After all: Blitz is free for me ... but TBH I was still so disappointed with the game that I never bothered downloading the updated version when it appeared in my Steam-library.. :D

I'm ROFLMAO listening the commentary on this ! Thumb up from me for making me laugh so much. I will also add roads do disappear into the sea in England, especially on the East coast, usually in the direction towards a house that has since fallen off the edge of the cliff due to coastal erosion. So I guess that could be realistic, it just sounds like the rest of the game that's the issue !

From a marketing perspective, Cliffs is getting their $25 worth from your video. Close to a cent per view and counting. I mention $25 because you keep referring to it. Pretty good return on investment, if TFS handed back your $25 for you to make this review. Good or bad. Appreciate your taking the time to do review Cliffs to you fan base and wider KZread scene. Whatever your thoughts on a particular game, you are helping attract more people to simming, purely by putting it our there. I am sure that is why you started out in the first place. Those people will make up their own mind whether the monetary investment was worthy. I remember in the 90's new games in Australia cost $80-90 bucks. I remember when B 17 came out, that sucker was $120 then! Came with an instruction booklet, so big, it should have been solely blamed for the destruction of forests.. That's the equivalent of about $200 now. Who the freaking hell nowadays would cough up that coin for any game... Makes $25 sound like the bargain of the century for what you get in comparison with or without flaws. Any mention of Cliffs, particularly on social media, by people with a decent following like yourself is good for the game, even with negative reviews. I also play X-Plane and have enjoyed your videos. I even laughed at some of your one liners here. Just my sense of humour. Do I wish you had been more positive. You bet. My opinion of Cliffs is different then yours, and that's ok. Plenty of games and also movies over the years have been slaughtered in reviews, yet still attract a loyal following. People into this era, given it's probably the only 'real' sim that is based around BOB, will buy it anyway. Just like I did. I love Cliffs, grew up on Battle of Britain stories. I would say to everyone who has watched this video, had not heard of Cliffs before, and love that theatre and time of war, go check out others on KZread. Plenty of brilliant video's, I'm sure giving both positive and negative reviews. As they should for balance. If a game out there only has positive reviews, I would be very suss of that. At $25 it's still pretty damn cheap. Equivalent of a 6 pack of beer, 5 x coffees, pack of ciggies, a hour or less of paid work, all of which many people spend/do without even thinking about it. Like any game, particularly those active online either in game or the forums, it is the community that inhabits it that makes the game. Each one of the groups habitating the Cliffs world, offers something to everyone. Some dont like others. Guess that is life and a real bummer IMHO. No different to people passionately barracking for rival teams playing the same sport. There are great people across all, but us humans, we can be a tribal lot... Thanks again mate. I hope you keep making sim related videos for many years to come. Good and bad reviews. As the old saying goes, any advertising is good advertising, for any of the sims you review, or do guides for. Cheers.

Thanks mate. As mentioned I think Cliffs is a bloody great sim. I exhibited it at an airshow only last weekend. The general opinion was extremely positive. I think any sim is on a hiding to nothing if it gets compared to anything like real life. What Cliffs offers those interested in that theatre is the change to jump in your favourite aircraft and pretend you were there, and take ones mind off real world issues for a while. I have and really enjoy BoS as well (it is where I get my Fw190 fix) and have been playing WW2 since the mid 80's. I know a worthy sim when I see one. Is it perfect, nope. Is it perfect for me? Sure is. There are a number of people out there who have invested either a shit load of money and or time to bring this sim back to life. Not every choice is going to be universally liked. In fact there is stuff all chance of that happening. But at least the effort has/is been made. Without their efforts, and I'm talking about anyone who has done something to better and or promote the game, we wouldn't be here 7 years after release reviewing/talking about it. ATAG have their detractors, but do a massive amount and have the big server following ACG's Cliffs 'movie' for mine is still the best promotional video out there, possibly for any sim, Phil's instructional videos got me started and still recommended at ATAG for new people. Karaya releases his latest greatest hits and thousands tune in instantly. Half the time I am sure to see if there death is one of them! Given your family history with the battle, you also have a vested interest in Cliffs. You should, your great uncles, and thousands of other took a seat on big balls airlines every time they strapped themselves into their cockpits and fought for their respective countries. Possibly why you have been critical of it, given higher expectations. Some people have negative opinions of Cliffs, TFS and for various reasons, however the overwhelming majority find Cliffs a great sim. I do encourage people to buy it - in a heart beat. Steam have a 14 day or 2 hour playing refund policy. Nice little bit of insurance. I know for mine, I will know if a game is worth the price within 2 hours. Don't like it, get your refund and move on. I would like to see the percentage of refunds for Cliffs. I would be confident is believing it to be absolutely bugger all. Hopefully Crash, down the track you may get a bit of time in Cliffs, see it's growth and post another video, 5.0, the North African campaign maybe? Happy to wing up and cause some mayhem and destruction, in no order. Call sign Pattle. Cheers.

I've had this sim from the initial appalling release all those years ago to the much improved version you're reviewing but to my mind it's left in the dirt by IL2 and DCS by not supporting VR. I cannot ever go back to flying on a screen now the genie is out of the bottle. I agree with the comment below though about the flight modelling; though I've never flown a real WW2 fighter, I am a commercial pilot myself and at one point had my own Yak 52, and the DCS flight model to my mind is way too twitchy. Maybe its more technically accurate but without proper force feedback controls the plus realism factor of having the things shock stall at accurate angles of alpha is pointless if you can't feel when you're getting near it. IL2 Stalingrad etc just feels more "right" given the limitations of most people's kit. I enjoyed the review though, I like your stuff!

Thank you very much sir. I think it fell victim to being the work of a part time team, there's nothing like a cheque to focus one's mind on a task. I more or less agree with your points, I've never flown commercially, but I feel the DCS modules build that slight apprehension one should feel when turning on to a runway. I enjoy the hell our of IL2 BoS/BoK and I think their flight modelling is much better than CloD, but I don't quite feel that sense of danger, incidentally for GA I feel XP11 is quite close in terms of how flight 'feels'.

@@Laobi I feel the same. DCS spitfire feels as I imagine and have heard it used to perform when landing. It bounces all over the runway if you mess up the landing, and is a genuine thrill. You have to do exactly as they say one had to with the real spitfire, and tapdance all over the rudder to get her under control. By contrast, I find the BOX modules a bit bland and unchallenging. All I ever have to do to land the BOX spitfire is slow down basically. Even if it did transpire that the BOX module is more realistic (I think it was nerfed for a more mainstream audience if I am being honest though) I still prefer the thrill and feel of the DCS modules. Though I do love the WW2 atmosphere I find it very hard to go back to BOX because of how much I love the DCS modules. They just feel more realistic, whether or not they actually are or not!

I'm delighted to finally encounter someone that agrees with me, most notably on that key-binding issue and the AI. "Oh but just play Multiplayer." Well sometimes I don't feel like flying with a bunch of half-wits and wanna-be Hartmanns and just want some quick time solo to have a fun and enjoyably realistic time. I'm surprised you didn't touch on any of the other singleplayer options either since for a series reknowned for its ease of mission building, the Full Mission Builder's gone AFAIK and the Quick Mission Builder is absolute shit compared to the one in 1946, or even the one in the more recent BoX games. Speaking of which, I whole-heartedly suggest you pick at least one of them up. Battle of Kuban came out recently and it is absolute banging awesome. Remember that Rise of Flight career you liked so much? Well it's pretty much in BoX now, and you can even carry through a career playthrough from Moscow through Stalingrad and all the way to Kuban if you own all three games. [Since they're all part of the same base.]

Well on one hand, the overall design is very good and surprisingly enjoyable. That's from someone who far prefers multiplayer. On the other hand, the aircraft AI is not good at all. Enemy planes always turn in predictable patterns, regardless of aircraft strengths, they have perfect 360 vision and can't be surprised, and they aim like the aimbots they are so if they somehow get behind you they are quite deadly. Having said that, right now compared to CLoD, most would not have the confidence that TF could deliver a pizza, while 1C/777 have been either meeting their released goals or exceeding them. So you've a better chance at things improving with BoX than with CLoD - or DCS, which can't decide on a focus for, well, seemingly anything.

  • @Dusty9261

    @Dusty9261

    6 жыл бұрын

I can certainly agree on that, though I'd argue that any good or enjoyable design is a stroke of luck rather than a result of the game's honest offerings. Not that it's impossible to have fun, I just think that with Cliffs, you have fun *in spite* of the game, rather than *because* of the game. BoX has improved so, so dramatically over the years that frankly I'm already set to buy every single damn expansion they come out with. I bought the Early Access copy of BoS way back in 2014, and I'm still here playing the thing religiously. That's because the game actually allows you to have the kind of fun that you want. Cliffs, on the other hand, takes a *LOT* of elbow grease to get some enjoyment out of. Elbow grease that really, in my opinion, never was, never is, and at this rate never will be enough for the game. I suppose the main reason Multiplayer is so enjoyable for so many, is because that even the idiots there have more knowledge on what fun is than the people who made Cliffs in the first place.

Cliffs of Dover isn't worth anymore to buy in general now, if you want to play multi-player only. when i came back after six years of not playing, i realized, that the servers are very low populated now and most of then need the Desert Wings Tobruk expansion, which still cost over 40 bucks. that's way too expensive to me tbh. i would always chose IL Clod over the il2 Great Battles series, but when there's not much goin on on the servers today, it doesn't makes any sense.

I bought IL2 CloD when it first came out, and Team Fusion have done a great job with it. Does that mean I like Blitz. No, not really. I uninstalled it a while back, just after Blitz was released, because I enjoy flying in IL2 1946 with the BAT mod far more. IL2 CloD Blitz is just too limited in it's scope. I also have DCS, with the Huey, The A-10 and Mi8 modules, do I think that's the future. No. DCS is a disjointed poorly optimized mess in perpetual beta with a handful of largely unrelated aircraft that once you've studied them, and played through the short linear campaigns (if they even come with one) there's very little else to do unless you want to play multiplayer. And we don't all want to play multiplayer, I certainly don't, in any game, because I don't enjoy playing against people who are far better (because they spend all day every day playing) and have far better equipment (read Warthog HOTAS) than I do. DCS also requires too much in terms of hardware costs - because it's so poorly optimised. And then there's the cost of the modules. If I want to fly a Spitfire over Normandy in DCS that would cost me in the region of £60+. WTF! £60+ for DLC for a game that requires a top end computer to just about run with stable 60fps at 1080p. No thanks. Then there's the fact that ED keep breaking the game, the recent move to 2.5 left the game (more) unplayable for many people, including myself, due to more FPS issues. And ED are just as bad at the old the customer is wrong attitude as anyone else. I bought IL2 Battle of Stalingrad a couple of years ago hoping it was a new Il2 1946, even though I don't really like the Eastern Front setting, and uninstalled it about and hour later realising it isn't. Nice shiny new graphics yes, but the single player campaign was absolute shite. Probably still is. It's trying to be an MMO and pays lip service to the single player mode (like Warthunder funnily enough), and I don't want an MMO for a combat flight sim - for reasons described above. It is a sad state of affairs when the most enjoyable WW2 flight sim is in fact something that was released over a decade and a half ago and has been supported by modders since it's arrival and is still being developed to this day.

Your high. DCS and IL-2 BoX have seen substantial improvements. Box has a career mode now. And while limited in quantity of content it's certainly a quality. Plus the ever expanding fronts. DCS is better for modern and late cold war aircraft than ww2 at the moment. And I've yet to run into any optimization issues. Partially because admittedly I do have a top of the line rig. But I also played arma 3 which is literally the most shittiest unopimitized game in existence which is a travesty for a sim. But if you want modern and advanced aircraft like the F-16, F/A-18C or even Chinese JF-17 DCS is unarguably the way to go. Plus the euro fighter and a dynamic campaign are in the works. It is however too expensive for anyone who isnt a flight sim hobbyiest. 1946 is without a doubt an excellent game but if that's the only acceptable flight sim for you either your taste is extremely specific or you lack taste. Your comment is 2 years old however and BoX and DCS are definitely worth looking over

Allot of these issues could have easily been avoided if the devs weren't so quick to declare war on any sort of criticism. Truly sad as there really is no game out there quite like it. They kept the dream alive, bashed it to death with a small hammer-sized MLG censor horn, drizzled some confetti on top of its mangled corpse, dragged it into town square and slapped a sticker onto its chest reading "Blitz" on it. Thankyou for another awful review. In this case though, it's just awfully depressing ... RIP Cliffs and RIP Tobruk

Pilot4ever, well, I've flown with ACG for four and a half years now, and I can't share your feelings about Cliffs at all. The current server issues we have right now are not related to the 4.5 update at all - we had them before as well - just ask Pitti about it... And no - the majority of us is NOT happy with the move to BoX. That piece of arcade bullshit is much worse than Cliffs will ever be. Have you counted the votes in the poll on our web site? Oh and Crash, you might consider doing a video on BOS as well. I'd really like to know how you find those flight models there... And I have to disagree with you, that every aircraft in Cliffs feels the same. That's simply not true. You can do things in a 109 that you could never do in a Spit or vice versa... Looking at you videos, you seem to be very keen on DCS. Have you flown the German WWII airplanes there? Their FMs aren't too great either (especially the 109). This is a general problem across every available competitor, not just in Cliffs. And compared to the very expensive and very small Normandy map in DCS, the landscape in Cliffs does quite well - have you noticed that every street in every town on that map ends just nowhere? And that England is completely void of ANY towns or villages and that they use the same German type hangars there, too?

It isn't a landing... it is what happens if you land while they are in formation with you. Even telling them to RTB doesn't get them to disengage from you as flight lead the way it does in other sims.

The worst part for me is that the AI are either so brain dead that it's not even fun to fight against or Erich Hartmann clones who defy the laws of physics with no inbetween. Not to mention the ridiculous accuracy of bomber gunners. If they fix the AI then maybe I'll start enjoying the game once again.

So I can't get into online flight sims without getting pulled into some drama filled flame wars, made by a bunch of nerds who spend every evening having an infrared camera record the ping-pong balls they stick on their heads? No thx. I was so close to buying a stick & pedals, but after watching this review and reading five minutes on various forums I realised this community is just another form of combative circle jerking. Thank you! From the bottom of my heart thank you so very much for saving me from wasting time and money. You people seem as petty and horrible as the worst characters I met in the Warhammer community when I was younger. Nerds gonna nerd, I guess. +1 like from me.

On the other hand, if you don't have vast amounts of money to buy every new Il-2 or even larger amounts for a PC that can handle DCS it's still a good choice. If you can forget about singleplayer. BTW, I'm not defending its flight model, but I've read in one of the memoirs (Wacław Król, "My Spitfire") that Spit Mk.9 was significanlty harder to fly that Mk5. It does feel a bit dated though...

LoL even if they start giving it for free its to mutch, before they get Blitz out, what they said its gona be free patch game was 10$, and then 1C get it all of suden to 25$ after free patch. And this Tobruk DLC that will come who knows when (2020 if they are lucky) i bet 1C will price 60-80$ to finish the kill. CloD is dead people playing it on ATAG dont understand that if TF5 dont sell no more patches for it, and its now game for thouse few to play with.

  • @PLHarpoon

    @PLHarpoon

I guess some clarification is needed. It was a free patch to those that had CLOD before. I agree that 25$ is too much. I bought the game for 10$ and I'm pretty happy with it, but I'm willing to admit it's because: 1. to me battle of Britain is more engaging that eastern or late European fronts 2. my PC melts when I try to run DCS 3. I'm not willing (or able, for that matter) to pay 240$ for each version of BOX + another 80 for future releases and 4. I don't fully trust Russian developers making a game about Russian planes without any sort of bias. Even with that, I also admit, that if 2 and 3 weren't an issue and I'd have to pay 25$ for Blitz I'd pass but I see no point in declaring a game "dead" (assuming the phrase means anything).
