Smith also ruined his own marketing by going full Hollyweird douchebag on the He-Man critics right when this got announced, so many people who WOULD HAVE helped promote it just ignored it. Personally, I feel he deserves to have this flop because of his attitude

Kevin Smith having a heart attack years ago truly shook him to the core. He changed so many things in his life as a result of that near-death experience. Knowing Kevin as little as I do, and knowing how similar our thoughts tend to be, I can understand why Becky's death was a necessary event in Clerks III. Kevin has sat and contemplated what the lives of his friends and family would have possibly been like if he had actually died. I think that was why Becky's death was a necessary part of the film; so we could see how her death affected Dante.

The overarching theme is Randall making a movie. Here's how you play it, first lines of Clerks 4. Dante: "I thought I died in the last movie". Randell: "No, that was just in the movie I made".

Honestly, I kinda hope Kevin will keep making View Askewniverse movies, but not sequels. I really loved how his early movies had the same universe, callbacks and links between them, but he created new characters and new storylines and then added Jay and Bob for some hilarious scene. They are the best when they are on the screen for a very limited time. I loved "Zach and Miri make a porno" and this movie could work really well as a part of the New Jersey trilogy (I guess it was retroactively sucked into the canon).

This is the most emotional I’ve seen/heard you do a review, but it was clear from the things you said what this movie trilogy meant to you. I am curious as to how long from when you saw the movie to recording this review as your emotions still seemed very raw. It’s a shame this movie got so little advertising - seemed like it arrived with little fanfare, I’ve hardly seen or heard anyone talk about it.

It would be neat to see a series of updated shorts on some of the characters. Like TS ends up befriending his father in law and it's just a few minutes of them having a Thanksgiving dinner. Brody running a comic book store and dealing with the death of comic store fronts. Willem being a highschool wrestling coach or something. I dunno. Just completely different tones than the original film to reflect the new stage of life a lot of the characters are in.

Clerks 2 is easily my favourite comedy and Kevin Smith movie. I relate so much to the story and the relationships. It's become the movie I return to time and again when I am feeling especially down. I really need it right now as I had to put down my cat, Swifty, who was my best friend in the world. So hearing how morbid this movie is, I'm extremely disappointed cause I could use some optimism right now.

One thing from the deleted scenes of the first movie "Clerks" which I feel the tragic end of Clerks 3 served as a tongue-in-cheek call back to: In a deleted final scene of Clerks, Dante is alone in the store, a customer walks in, pulls a gun, and shoots Dante in the face, killing him. The feeling was that ending would be far too bleak and awful, mean-spirited for no reason, so Smith deleted it. I think he killed off Dante at the end of Clerks 3 because as far back as the OG Clerks, that was the plan.

Clerks. That movie reflected my generation so well. The second movie was great, a polished comedy, but Clerks 3 had heart. More importantly, it managed to recapture that generational voice somehow. I say somehow, because Kevin isn't a great director. His writing is flawed. But he has heart! That more than anything carries his movies. And it was on display in 3. Congrats on your trilogy, Kevin.

I’m a massive legacy Kevin Smith fan and have followed everything he’s done through his career, but Clerks 3 was a giant misfire. Immediately after seeing it my opinion was mood was very much like yours. But the further away I got from it, the more disappointed I became. After the first 2, the third was just off. It wasn’t his heart attack that ruined his career, it was becoming a wake and baker. Being a stoner didn’t stifle his creativity and make him lazy, quite the opposite, it just made his ideas really crappy.

  • @DRM349

I saw this opening weekend, didn't even know a Clerks 3 was coming out but stumbled on it on the way to see another movie. I complained to my friend for most of the movie, I loved Clerks 2 and it was such a disappointment to see that turn into this. Most of the dialogue felt like forced one-liners, the acting comes and goes, and the worst thing is the premise was so good and just wasted it felt like. The end came out of nowhere and left no real conclusion to the series (which in retrospect, life goes on so having no conclusion isn't a bad thing), just leaving me feeling unsatisfied. All that being said I bawled my eyes out for its last 15 minutes and have been talking about it to anyone that will listen. The ending really as abrupt as it was really made me love and think back on their relationship, it was a beautiful part of a flawed (in my opinion) film.

I think the way Kevin choose to end Dante's story was very truthful to how real life operates. We don't often get our happy ending, we just get endings and we have to find a way in ourselves to accept and learn from them. I think the process of this film was likely very cathartic for Smith and I think he really shows off his voice in this film which is what he was doing with the first Clerks and something that always generates quality work from a filmmaker.

Why not have current customer/ clerk interactions and have a new story with Dante and Randal dealing with Randal falling in love and Dante’s kid taking come of the clerking duties? Why not make it funny instead of so depressing? Real life is depressing, Randal could have had the heart attack and then decided to find his love. It didn’t have to end so badly for Dante. It takes away the ending of Clerks 2 and that stinks.
