Came here to say the same thing. According to Roy Underhill, it is the best wood for steam bending, the berries are edible but have almost no flesh on them.

a Hackberry tree has rather narrow leaves and the bark is rough, but not usually that bumpy. They also have an aggressive root system with large major roots.

Those carpet roots happen when the soil is saturated and oxygen is low. Same happens with shallow bedrock. Its called a limiting layer. Trees that require deeper roots typically die in saturated soils.

If it wasn’t so difficult to transport, this would be a fun and awesome place to setup the dragline. Here in Kansas we have so many of those Hackberry trees. They get huge. (3-5 foot diameter trunks.) They are excellent firewood. One unique thing is in the winter you can cut them and easily burn them the same day.

My guess is that there was always a pond there and at some point it was enlarged by damming up the bank on the lowest side, hence the reason it has that beauty and natural character…I’d have left more trees :-) especially the hackleberry! It was a fine specimen and considering how old, tall and majestic it can grow, would have enhanced the site. I’m glad you and the owner do talk about what trees to keep though :-)

Here in Western Ky. where We live , I think the Eclipse was only like 96% totality but, just 40 mi. or so North to Evansville IN. they went 100% Dark !! Still looked pretty cool here though !! But, got the old pond coming on a long man !! Huge difference already, looks like a nice little pond, just needs to be dug out some, didn't ya say, it is pretty shallow ?? But, Great as always Chris !! Have a Great Day !! Don't know how I missed the video yesterday ?? But, Have a Good one Today !! And, On too the Next !!

From a google search: Celtis occidentalis (American Hackberry, Beaverwood, Common Hackberry, False Elm, Hackberry, Nettle Tree, Northern Hackberry). Similar to or the same as European hackberry. It is native to the Mediterranean region including parts of southern Europe, northern Africa and western Asia. In Australia it is know as Celtis australis. It is a deciduous tree with a wide spreading crown. It competes with native plants and forms dense stands along waterways.
