You are a genius dude! You just saved my trip to Italy can't thank you enough. Didn't know the fx3 had any equivalent to the fx6's super 35 mode. Big time lifesaver!

This video just saved my grade in my film class. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't zoom like the professor said. Ty so much!!!

I'm glad to hear that! By the way, it's also possible that the teacher used a lens with "Power Zoom." In that case, the zoom lever would actually control an optical zoom. Best of luck!

Thanks for the comparison! I've used clear image zoom a few times on wedding shoots and it's great, saves me in a pinch.

Thanks so much for clarifying that clear image zoom does not switch off the eye tracking on the fx3; I was going nuts wondering whether it was just focusing on faces, or whether it was eye-tracking, because I couldn't see any tracking box! Many thanks for making this video!

Let’s put it this way: I’m 95% sure. I did various tests and the performance looked the same - because I wondered just like you and found no information on the Internet, or only that the autofocus no longer works because the box is no longer visible. But that seems to me to be a wrong conclusion. If you notice that there is a difference, please let me know in what Situation - then we can get to the bottom of it even further.

with clear image zoom your focus settings turn immediately to wide then back to your settings with it off @@deadendboredom

@WeLoveNye How do you determine that? As I mentioned, I'm not 100% certain either, but Clear Image Zoom seemed to keep the autofocus on the subject just as well as without it. I admit I haven't tested much further since I never use the feature. Which test have you conducted that clearly demonstrated to you that the autofocus is no longer performing as effectively?

i shoot events for my livelihood where theres ton of people. anytime i use clear image zoom it immediately picks up the first main object on the screen. zero touch capabilities but soon as i take it off its good. @@deadendboredom

Great effort, mate! I don't usually use CIZ on my a7SIII but maybe I should give it a shot. I set it up on the menu rocker if you press it then you can zoom with it.

Hi, Thnaks for sharing the test. Base on you images, I don't see the benefit of using the S35 mode as the Clear Image Zoom do the same and let you record in 4K. I've seen other tests where the Clear Image Zoom was looking sharper than no Clear Image Zoom, due to the sharpening. It seems Clear image Zoom is ueful when using S35 lenses like the Fujinon MKs.

Clear Image Zoom is sharper, unfortunately this is not so good to see on KZread. The only advantage I see in S35 is the smaller file size of HD.

I don't quite understand the question. Are you asking whether the FX3 displays eye tracking after the latest update when clear image zoom is activated?

Interestingly, no. Touch to Focus no longer works if you are zoomed in with clear image zoom with the FX3. This is not a problem with the FX6.

Might be being dense. So what this shows is, you can still use S35 lens on the FX6 but use the Clear Zoom function in 4K instead of changing to S35? How do the images compare to the full frame image in 4K? Terrible or useable for a 4K project?

  • @deadendboredom

Yes, using APS-C lenses, CIZ is a good way to capture a bit more detail vs s35. CIZ is sharper and more detailed compared to s35; you can see a few examples in the video starting at 0:58. 4K full frame naturally offers much more detail, but also a wider field of view, so it's not as comparable to s35 and CIZ. Whether high sharpness and a lot of detail are generally necessary is up to the viewer. Personally, I often find a slightly softer and more organic-looking image more pleasant than high-resolution and clinical images. A good HD image in a 4K timeline is sufficient for me, and I believe most people wouldn't notice a difference (of course, it also depends on what you're filming… a dialogue scene with close-ups of people doesn't require as much detail as nature shots and panorama shots).

Has anyone noticed on the FX6 there is a bump when zooming out from clear imagine zoom to optical? It doesn't seem to happen on zooming in, but definitely see it on zooming out. It is bad enough that it would ruin a shot...

Its such a strange decision to remove all autofocus information and replace it with a dashed square when using clear image zoom, make it make sense!!

the dash outline is to give you a heads up that you are in clear image zoom and can expect some functions are limited as well as the fact that regardless of how well Clear image zoom works; there is a degradtion of the image. @@deadendboredom

@@magpiemike100 Absolutely correct, the image quality deteriorates, but it's superior compared to capturing the same frame in s35 crop mode - that was the main point I aimed to convey in the video.

Hey, the file resolution is still 4K/UHD? How do you think it's possible? Or is the resolution getting smaller according to the ciz?

In 4K with zoom, the file remains 4K. It's akin to placing an HD clip into a 4K timeline. Naturally, the captured image area then becomes more like 2.7K within a 4K container.
