Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How to boost your skincare routine with balm cleansers. The best cleansing balms and why you need them in your skin care routine.
Hey guys and welcome back to Mad About Skin where today we are talking cleansing balms, the best cleansing balm for each skin too and of course the reasons why I think everyone should have a balm cleanser in their skincare routine.
I have only recently started using balm cleansers, as someone with oily and acne prone skin I always thought cleansing balms were not for me but I want to dispel that myth today. Whatever your skin type there is a balm cleanser for you and there are so many great options at the drugstore.
Choosing the right balm cleanser is key and with so many amazing drugstore cleansers it shouldnt break the bank so lets take a look at some of the best ones to use as part of your daily double cleanse
I would love to know what your experience with cleansing balms have been so please leave me a comment below with any of your favourites.

When I was a young girl of 11 years old and started wearing mascara, (I'm 57 yrs old now), my Mom brought out her Ponds Cold Cream and showed me how to use it to take off my makeup before I washed my face. It's a very fond, loving, sweet memory that I have of my Mom teaching me what I needed to know. My Mom crossed over to the other side in 2009. I always think of Mom and smile when I see Ponds Cold Cream. 🤗 My mom taught me to double cleanse with it back in the 70s so it's funny to me when influencers or skin care experts talk about double cleansing like it's a somewhat recent skincare tip. 😏 Ponds Cold Cream still works well to remove makeup in an affordable way! Ponds also sells an actual cleansing balm now too but I haven't tried it yet. I haven't tried very many cleansing balms but I do like Banilla Zero and Good Molecules cleansing balms. I'd like to try the Beauty of Joseon and the Juno cleansing balms. I also like to use cleansing oil instead as my first cleanse. Purito's cleansing oil is my favorite cleansing oil. Have a beautiful and blessed day! 💕

Hi Rob as someone with super dry skin I do like cleansing balms and cleansing oils. They're fairly similar, as you have to melt the balm into an oil anyway and work the same on my skin. I sometimes double cleanse with the balm or oil and massage with a second application, whereas the first application is to remove all the makeup, spf and grime. I don't like to massage with the dirt in the first application tbh. I have spine issues and can't bend over a sink very well, so I always use a cloth to remove my cleanser. I am normally fine with just the balm/oil and don't need a gel cleanser etc - especially if I've done it twice. If I don't want to/have time to massage etc, then I'll use a cream or milk cleanser as my second cleanse. One of my favourites is the IL oat balm and it's really affordable. I also like the purito from green cleansing oil and the Klairs cleansing oil in the clear bottle (the black bottle is fragranced). I also recently used up the Curel makeup removing gel (which turns into an oil when applied to dry skin) - really effective, but nipped my eyes a bit and therefore not a repurchase for me. The skincity cleansing balm is nice and I enjoyed using it, but it's more expensive than the IL oat balm and isn't any better performance wise. The oat balm is a much repurchased item for me, as it's so affordable and just really works on my skin. I do stick to fragrance free products on my rosacea and eczema prone skin, but for those with less sensitive skin I agree cleansers are the place to use a bit of fragrance if they wish. Prior to developing rosacea I did use/like the elemis balm and others with fragrance. i enjoyed the sensorial experience of them, but now after so long fragrance free they're too much of a scent - even just when smelling it in the tub. Our sense of smell does change, when not exposed to many scented products on a regular basis. Just a thought. Best wishes.

Taking Dr. Dray's advice, I tried the Pond's fragrance-free sensitive skin makeup remover cold cream (green lid) and I like it--especially waterproof mascara. Also great at breaking up sunscreen. I have oily and spot-prone skin so I have a lifetime of keeping oils off my face and being phobic about anything oily on my face. It was really difficult to even try the cold cream. I follow with Clinique facial soap for oily skin (bar and then liquid) to make sure the oils are off. The liquid soap has humectants and soothers so my skin still isn't stripped. So really, a triple cleanse! I want to try the Clinique Take The Day Off cleansing balm in the purple jar, because people rave about it, including people with my skin type/concerns. The major oil in it is safflower oil, which is high in linoleic acid (70%), which is good for people with spot-prone skin, because research shows that our sebum is low in that type of acid. The massage will help break up sebum too! Safflower oil is anti inflammatory so it will calm the skin and aid in wound healing. It has phenols which are antioxidant and anti aging--including actively fighting UVB damage and photoaging. It is even antibacterial, antifungal, and active against pathogens. It is rich in vitamin E and pairs well with Vitamin C. Oh shoot, I just sold myself...gotta go order a jar.

I tend to disagree with the claim that water-based cleansers can't get rid of oil-based makeup and sunscreen. If anything, they often do 'too good' of a job. Cleansers contain surfactants that act just like a gentle version of, say, dish soap. On a molecular level, surfactants have an oil-attracting end that binds to the oils on your skin and a water-attracting end that binds to the water molecules. This causes your makeup and sunscreen to dissolve into water and wash away. Just like you don't need to rub soiled dishes in oil before washing it with dish soap, you don't have to use a cleansing oil/balm before cleansing with a water-based cleanser. However it can still be useful for dryness-prone skin or if your cleanser is too stripping. In your oil cleansing step, you're working excess lipids into the surface of the skin before going in with a second lipid-removing cleanser. This acts as a buffer for your second cleansing step, since it now has to remove the oils from the makeup, sunscreen, and also your oil cleanser, which means it is more likely to leave the natural lipid barrier of your skin intact and replenished. I have dry and eczema-prone skin, so this is why I like an oil cleansing step. I actually want my second cleansing step to do a 'worse' job at removing all the lipids from the surface of my skin so that it doesn't further impair my already vulnerable skin barrier.

I agree, to some degree. I have oily combo skin. I really only use an oil-based cleanser for stuff like waterproof makeup. It makes quick work of it due to better miscibility. I'd have to spend more time and use more of a traditional cleanser to do an inferior job, despite it theoretically being to do the job at a molecular level. I also find an oil-based cleanser can be used as a gentle exfoliating step if my skin is peeling for whatever reason, granted it takes like 3+ minutes to complete the job. Just thinking about using a water-based cleanser for more than a minute makes me shudder 😂

I get your thought process. However, Rob is correct. And actually, so are you(in a way), but let's look at how the chemistry works here. >Oil is hydrophobic and lipophilic (redundant but I want to point to both 'tails' of the cleansing molecules) As such, oil is attracted to oil and repels water. >Water is lipophobic and hydrophilic (the opposite). As such, water is attracted to water and repels oil. Water has no ability to dissolve oil and vice-versa. While it is true that one might 'scrub' off all traces of water-based makeup with a H2O-based cleanser - it is really the mechanical action (the scrubbing) that is forcing the makeup residual off the skin. Much the same as one could claim that bleach will remove nail polish, and it would if one used an SOS pad to apply and scrub at the polish), while acetone will remove the polish without the aid of mechanical action on the simple basis of the molecular attraction between the two products. Clearly it isnt the bleach's chemical action doing the work, it is the mechanical action of scrubbing that is responsible as bleach cannot dissolve nail polish. While most surfactants are 'double tailed' and have the ability to address both, one of those "tails" (always the -philic suffix will be dominant and the 'phobic' bill be recessive). My hopes are not at all to challenge nor insult your intelligence, please don't take this in that way. Your logic is mechanically sound, but theoretically incorrect. Please take this in the way its delivery is intended, and that is lovingly.

Does anyone remember Dr Babor? The cleansing routine always included 2 steps First was the hy-oil cleanse followed by the hy-milk cleanse. This routine of balm (oil) before the foaming cleanse is nothing new, the Europeans have been using this application for many decades. However, it is just now being reintroduced to the US.

Blams? I want to laugh about Ponds. Yet my grandmother mother and aunts all used it. And they all had good skin. One of my aunts was a model in the 60's. They literally used cooking lard to take the heavy makeup off....in all sincerity I never understood beef or pork lard on your face.

But remember: they had pancake makeup. That stuff was tough.

@@KentuckyLiz I know plus the black winged liner was a charcoal base. I use too love watching my aunt sit and do her makeup. It truly was an art form in itself.

Banila Co is not cruelty free. Is it really worth it when there are other options? You are literally funding the torture of animals.

Cleansing balms are very effective and lots of people like them but I prefer a rinse off cleansing lotion which is basically a moisturising lotion with a little bit of surfactant. I formulate my own and my family and friends love it 😊
