Cleaning the Levoit LV600S Humidifier - "By the Book"

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video provides step by step instructions for the cleaning and descaling process of the Levoit LV600S Smart Hybrid Ultrasonic Humidifier. It follows the instructions as laid out in the LV600S user manual.
Make sure if you do the full vinegar treatment that you re-attach the water outlet valve to the tank before putting the tank back on the base. If you don't reattach it, the vinegar won't flow into the base.

David Sedaris' new audiobook is as avant garde as it is mundane, the simple premise of humidifier maintenance shines an ironic light on the human condition and a tongue in cheek commentary on the current social zeitgeist. Although it doesn't quite compare to his classic works, you won't be disappointed. 3/4 stars.

Worthwhile especially for info missing from Levoit's instructions. This guy shows how to remove and replace the part attached to the underside of the mist channel, and even mentions its omission by Levoit. See 15:50-16:42 for the visual. Saved me from a frustrating afternoon.

Hi ... thanks for your comment. You are right that the instruction manual was not clear on this issue. I added that comment at 7:15, and also put a note in the description, after I had posted the video. As I realized later that the manual was a little misleading on this issue. It became clear to me when I noticed that my vinegar was not flowing properly into the base. I was hoping that people would notice the added comment or the description as it was too late to change the video. I am happy you found it. Thanks again.

Just think how much the distilled water industry is cheering ... if you use distilled water, you won't need as much vinegar ... you can save on vinegar by just buying gallons and gallons of distilled water! You can either buy 50 gallons of vinegar a year or 350 gallons of distilled water ... I guess it depends on how big your garage is!

Problem with video and instructions - if you take the water outlet valve off before putting vinegar in the tank and the tank on the base, as instructed, vinegar does not flow into the tank. That is why you found so little vinegar in the base after taking off the tank (and the dirt/scale undisturbed), since the water won't pass from the tank the the base without the outlet valve. Solution - leave the outlet valve on the tank, let the tank soak 10 mins, then put the tank on the base. The vinegar will flow to the base and clean it.

Thank you very much for your comment. You are correct. Though the instructions say to remove the water outlet valve, when the valve is removed the float arm is not able to engage the spring to open the valve when the tank is placed on the base. I tried to do it "by the book" but , unfortunately, the book was wrong. I have added a subtitle edit at 7:14 to advise everyone to re-attach the water outlet valve. Thank you for picking this up and for your comment.

Thank you so much for your Awesome, detailed video. We misplaced our LeVoit manual and your Vid was a lifesaver. Like you, we love our LeVoit Humidifier and a bit of routine maintenance is worth preserving such an awesome machine. Better to clean the machine every three weeks or so, than clean up after my nosebleeds from the Home interior dryness… I personally use a “Brita” water filter (I set it on our Bathroom Hot Tub) then i add the filtered “Brita” water to the Humidifier. The filtered water may not be as efficient as Distilled water but it is convenient and much less expensive. The filtered water has eliminated any white residue and with the spigot on the “Brita,”(we have the 6L one with the spigot) it is just an arms reach away from the dogs water bowl… You have earned my subscription and again, many thanks!

Thanks, I am sure distilled water would make a big difference. I am using it primarily to humidify musical instruments, so I have to run it 24 hours a day throughout the winter months, non-stop, so purchasing and storing all of that distilled water just wasn't practical. Tap water creates a little extra work in the cleaning process, but I get faster and faster each time I do it. So, overall, it works fine.

@@gonziwonzihonzi Thanks for watching and for the feedback. I do "try" to keep a close eye on it as my humidifier is on 24/7 in the winter months in a bedroom where my guitars are stored. I do watch the instruments for signs of lime or other deposits that might land on them. So far, I have not noticed anything significant. The guitars are not in real close proximity to the humidifier, just in the room, so it hasn't been a problem "that I notice". What I do notice is that the uncoated strings tend to rust much quicker from the general moisture. So that is more bothersome to me. I just try to keep the humidity at a level that prevents the wood from cracking and is not significantly impacted by the tap water. I'll keep my eye on it. Thanks!

First, thank you for a very informative video, it is much better than the manufacturer's own youtube video which is pretty useless and rather designed to falsely demonstrate how quick and easy the cleaning process is. Today I did the first cleaning after having used it for approx 10-14 nights total (~100 hrs) , intermittently over 1 month. I have a separate hygrometer that I rely on and only use the unit when humidity drops below 40. After a full night of use it gets to mid/upper 40s, I use it in a larger bedroom. Cleaning was easier than I thought thanks to your tips. Was able to see some white deposits and there was a bit of slimy feel in some corners but nothing off white (or pink or black). I now plan to clean every 2 weeks at least. I use purified water from the refrigerator. I'm sure it's not as good as distilled water but figure it's better than tap (but don't really know). Cleaning is no issue going forward, I can dedicate 15 min for this. The part that gives me pause is the white residue I started to see, most noticeable on shiny furniture surfaces. First I thought it was regular dust, but that's not the case, because this it's stickier. After some research online I have little doubt it is due to the minerals from the water that ultrasonic huimidifiers are dispersing in the air (see link below). I live in an area with hard water and do not have a water softener. Readers of this post may find this link related to ultrasonic humidifiers useful: www.epa.gov/sites/default/files/2014-08/documents/humidifier_factsheet.pdf In summary it appears most concerning is the dispersal of bacteria and mold (when not cleaning frequently enough).

Thank you for your very generous comment. I appreciate that you took the time to write it. I'm glad my video helped you. Yes, the white dust is most likely from the minerals in your hard water, typically high levels of calcium and magnesium. Hard water is known to leave white spots on glassware or residue on clothes. It is actually mentioned in the troubleshooting page in the manual. They say using distilled water will prevent this. I don't have a hard water issue in my area, so it's not as big a problem for me. I do use tap water, but try to clean it at the end of each week, to reduce the mineral build up. Thanks again. Good luck.

Thanks for this very helpful video. Honestly, the company is not going to like hearing this but after seeing what is involved in cleaning this unit, I have decided not to purchase. Can't believe that people actually go through this process weekly. Seems like a total pain and I certainly don't have the time or patience to do this. Fewer parts to clean less frequently is much more desirable. I'll continue the hunt for that.

Hi ... I understand, but keep in mind that the purpose of the video was to demonstrate a full, thorough cleaning and scaling as described in the book. It is for those who already purchased the product and want to do the full job but prefer to watch it rather than read the manual. In reality, you don't have to do a full thorough cleaning every week. It depends on how you use it, your environment etc. In the video, I ran it for 3 weeks straight, 24 hours a day and intentionally did not clean it for demonstration purposes. In my real usage, I usually give it a quick clean at the end of each week because it doesn't get that dirty. I can do it with my eyes closed, and do it in less than 10 minutes. I find it easy and not a pain. There are plenty other options that have fewer parts and clean up quickly (I have one). However, the quick simple clean machines, just don't have the features I wanted. So, the cleaning procedure had very little weight on my decision. I wanted the features, so if it took a few more steps to clean, it didn't matter to me. However, again ... I do it now it 5-10 minutes ... very easy. Good luck in your search.

Hello, Thank you for watching. So far, I have not experienced any leaking at the bottom of my humidifier or anywhere else. It continues to run fine. As far as the "dirt", yes, I just used a general term. The manual talks about dust, mineral deposits, and scaling etc. I didn't know if it was bacteria, as the water was never sitting stagnant. It was constantly refreshed with fresh "tap" water. I guess it could be the bacteria you mention. I don't encounter it much anymore as I tend to just stick to the weekly cleaning that the manual recommends. In the case of the video, I let it go for three weeks, almost hoping there would be some build up there to make it easier to demonstrate the cleaning as laid out in the manual.

Moisture has most likely settled inside of the "humidity sensor" after you cleaned it and thus giving you a high reading. The humidity sensor is located inside the essential oils aroma box. Make sure the mist nozzles are facing away from the aroma box so that mist does not settle on the sensor inside the aroma box. The solution is to turn off the humidifier, remove the aroma box and allow the sensor to air dry. You can see the location of the humidity sensor in the diagram on the instruction book page 5. (look for "L"). This issue is covered in the troubleshooting section at the back of the manual (page 23). Good luck.

Good grief! They have GOT to be kidding, expecting people will do this every week? Way too many nooks, crannies, and unnecessary pieces. They say not to, but throw one of those silver cartridges in there (many major brands available) and it'll make your life a lot easier. They won't hurt a thing and stop growth of the pink/orange mildewy gunk. The absorption pad also likely becomes unnecessary if you use the ion-exchange demineralization cartridges, which help prevent the white dust. I was looking at this model for the features I liked, but I'll keep looking for something a little less ridiculous to maintain.

Just a side note, in reality it wasn't all that difficult to clean and it can actually be done fairly quickly. In the case of this video, the humidifier had been running 24 hours a day for two weeks, with tap water. I was using it primarily to humidify guitars, so it had to run non-stop for two weeks. (It wasn't cost efficient to use distilled water with that schedule.) Had it had normal usage in a home, it probably wouldn't build up that much gunk and I could probably rinse the whole thing out in 15 minutes. In the video I went through the whole descaling process etc so that people would know the full process. Overall, I found it to be a great quality humidifier and the maintenance was not as difficult as it might look in the video. Now that I have cleaned it several times, I have it down to a science and it is very simple.

@@faithwithroshni4858 Hi ... Thanks for the clarification, I understand now. Yes, the float is a little difficult to remove because it is intentionally snapped in hard in order to prevent it from popping out during use. If you look at it, you will notice that, on the arm portion of the float, there are two snaps. One snaps is enclosed in the plastic, and the other is open on the top and snapped in on the bottom (back lefthand side of the arm). You have to twist it a little so that the left snap pops out and then slide the other side out of its hole. It is definitely tight, so you have to tug at it a little (or wedge something underneath the snap to push it up). It will pop out with a little force. Good luck.

The book specifically said "not" to use any detergent. They didn't say why, so I did not deviate from what they said. I live in Pennsylvania where my humidifier is only used for about 3-4 months in the winter but I tend now to do a quick "weekly" cleaning as that is what the manual recommends. The boiling is just there to kill any extra germs in the water (which their shouldn't be anyway). So I just use filtered water from a Brita water pitcher. I use it because theirs a lot of iron (as indicated by the subtile rusty red that comes out of some of the old pipes in my apartment) to filter that out.

Thanks for the suggestion. That might be a nice compromise between using tap water and buying and storing gallons and gallons of distilled water. In the case of this video, the humidifier was really just a "first use" test for humidifying musical instruments that required that the humidifier be on 24 hours a day for 3 weeks straight. I'm sure most people aren't using it at that rate or spacing out the cleaning that far. It just wasn't practical to buy and store so much distilled water for this use. At this point, however, I just take 15 minutes to clean it weekly, and the build up is really pretty minor.

@@goodcourseproductions5546 So a followup to my response. While the water filter does help filter out heavy metals (e.g. Iron), there's still the issue with lighter metals (e.g. Calcium, Magnesium). It probably was not a good idea to get the white version of this humidifier because it almost didn't seen noticeable, but it was there and likely spitting little calcium ions into the air as part of that "white dust" everybody talks about. I wish Levoit would let us use one of those floating cleaners, but that would probably make things worse because then it would be spitting out saline (salt mist)...on the other hand that might be good for the nostrils....just not good for everything else in the room. I should probably look around for some other solutions to fix the quality of the water.

I just don't see myself using one of those distiller devices considering the 700+ W power consumption. For comparison, the desktop computer I built has a power supply unit that uses that has a maximum power usage of 850W (which it doesn't really use all the time) and it does more than boil water.

    Why is it so complicated?

In reality, it is not complicated at all. Keep in mind the purpose of the video. The video is intended to help people who have "already purchased" the machine and want to "learn" how to do a complete, thorough, cleaning and descaling as it is described in the manual. The humidifier was intentionally run non-stop for 3 weeks, using tap water, without any cleaning, so that it could build enough bacteria to demonstrate the cleaning process. In reality, on a normal week, with normal use, my humidifier doesn't build much dirt and bacteria at all. I can usually clean it in less than ten minutes with a fairly simple rinse and do it practically with my eyes closed. If you clean it once a week, and use it normally, it is quite easy.

Thanks for watching, I'm really glad it helped you. As far as the "other thing" I guess I kinda couldn't help myself (lol). (In reality, I think I only said "kinda" "5 times in a 20 minute video, that's not too bad !... you only hear it "once" in the first 11 minutes. (Three of them happened together at the 11:22 mark, so that might have made it feel like "every sentence"). Sorry about that ... I'll try to keep that in mind in the future!

Classic taotronics humidifier is waaaay easier to clean. Levoit has too many pieces. And yet people are obsessed.

My guess is that the obsession is probably more based on how well Levoit humidifiers work, their features, and build quality. The cleaning process is secondary "to me". I'm sure there are all kinds of great humidifiers out there, but I do like this one and I find the cleaning process is not a real big deal. (The video makes it appear a little more cumbersome, so that viewers can see the full process. In reality, if it is cleaned once a week, before the dirt really builds up, I can do it in 10 minutes easily.) Thanks for taking the time to comment.
