Update from the Kavanagh Family. It is Sunday, April 12, 2020. Wishing a safe, peaceful Easter Sunday during this COVID-19 Pandemic. The fourth molly died to ich. We had the four molly fish for almost 3 months in the 10 gallon tank in daughter's bedroom. Now will empty out all of the water, clean all gravel, artificial plants, bubbler, coral, scrub tank, re-treat water and start new again. They four molly fish were really fun, moved throughout the tank often and were cool to watch. Lost all four within 2 weeks. We buried all four in our garden. This is so cool!!! I love your setup. I have a 5 gal for my beta and it’s upstairs in my room so when I need to clean it I have to lug it downstairs and clean it out, replace most of the water, and lug it back up. I was thinking about getting a 10 gal because I want my beta and some other fish with it (safe with betas) but I had no idea how to clean it. Thanks for the tutorial!! Seems really expensive though 😪

You're welcome and omg those siphon hoses are awesome so you don't have to move the whole tank. And which part are you referring to? It can get costly and to set up I found there's always some money that goes into it. If you have a good site like Kijiji up here in Ontario you can get a lot of stuff cheaper then new.

I think this is the best one I've seen. I got big tank acqurium and did not know about it. Had 3 goldfish 2 year in little fish bowl and got tank acqurium and then they died and I got a very bad bacteria infection and I am trying to get better. But I restarted the tank acqurium and then left for 2week before putting 1 fish in and then got more but I have looked up a lot of stuff and this one just explain more.

@@FinsandFurBabies I have a lot of tanks, but my ten gallon I find hard to clean because most of my tanks are huge, my smallest other than my ten gallon is a 55 gallon, and my largest is a 300 gallon, my siphon is made for bigger tanks and tends to sucks out every single piece of beneficial bacteria, so I have to take a dish to get the water out and rinse the and every time I do a water change. Can you help?

I have a question, or two. If I dont pre-filter and my water sucks too, what can I do besides adding the chlorine remover? What “stuff” did you put in your buckets before immediately pouring the water into the tank? I didnt realize one could do this with the fish still in the tank. This is very helpful. We just filled our 10-gallon today. We get our fish on Wednesday. I wish I had real plants for them.

What kind of fish pump are you using... appears to be an underwater one that gives you a lot of bubbles. Seems a good choice for filtering and for oxygen.

+ShyerLady At that time there was quite a few fish for a ten gallon so at least a 50% water change was needed and sometimes more then that. If there were only a couple fish in there then a smaller water change would be okay. The more fish, the bigger the water change.

How often do you water change? We have a new fish tank that's 16 gallons. Do we change it every week?

I have a Gubby tank with some shrimps in it. To controll the population i feed the baby shrimps and gubbys to my beta. I kinda like that way but the ammonia levels on my beta tank get a little bit high sometimes. How much water do i need to get rid off each time always bothers me because the ammonia levels are not consistent.

Just watched your video dated Oct 13, 2014 (its Sunday, April 5, 2020). You did a great job demonstrating a water change with this 10 gallon tank. We purchased a 10 gallon for our 9 yr old daughter in Jan 2020. We had 4 molly. We have been changing the water 25%. The four molly were doing so well and fun to watch. But during last week (March 30 - April 4, 2020), we lost two molly. We live in the metro west suburbs of Boston and the town water is very hard, with so much chlorine. Any suggestions for products to look for at Pet Smart to help us with treating the water? Will real plants like yours help us more with the water? We have fake plants and a air bubbler. that's a good question to ask. Once a week is recommended. There are a couple things to understand that can be confusing at first but get easier. The first is how a fish tank functions. This video explains the nitrogen cycle: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4x3mdqNYNCvkrw.html The nitrogen cycle is what keeps your tank healthy and running. The second is cycling which takes place in a new tank. It takes time for each stage of bacteria to grow and establish and takes at least a month or more in total. If you have questions about cycling a tank or anything else feel free to ask. Oh and live plants can help a ton with water quality.

Thank you and weekly is recommended but alas with all my live water plants I admit it's not weekly anymore. I can easily get away with every two weeks to a month. Without the live water plants it would be more.

Its "Team Kavanagh" from the metro-west suburbs of downtown Boston. Its Weds, April 8, 2020 and we lost another molly since posting on Sunday, April 5. We just noticed the white spots on the fourth molly. Learned the white spots is the most common of molly fish diseases, also known as ich or ick. The white spots are caused by the ciliate protozoan Ichthyophthirius multifiliis parasite. This afternoon added a teaspoon of salt per gallon (10) and raised the water temperature to 82 (F) degrees. We are going to get ParaGuard medication to add to the water. If the fourth molly dies, we will remove all water, scrub the gravel, wash the fake plants and coral and bubbler, and start with new (treated) water. We miss the three molly fish. They were active swimmers, fun to watch, and recognized us (excited to be fed) when we got close to tank. Ah, having an aquarium is a learning process for sure. Started this 10 gallon & 20 gallon tank in each of their bedrooms on Jan 17, 2020. Thanks again for your 2014 video! We'll keep improving.

Yup. Um they were the ones that came with the aquarium. I can't remember who the maker was. The short answer it was a good price so I got that one. :) I stuck with low light plants like rotala indica, anubias nana, amazon swords, and java moss. I also have crypt wendtii in other tanks. They're pretty much bullet proof plants.

With the sand I recommend stirring it every two to three months because air can get trapped in it since it compacts unlike gravel. A chop stick or finger work well for doing this. A good water critter have are Malaysian trumpet snails since they burrow through the sand (also help a tonne with algae). Be aware that for a bit after stirring sand it will cloud the tank since you're stirring up the beneficial bacteria and waste on the sand but it settles quickly. I keep the water clear with easy care live water plants. They suck a tonne of crap out of water so it stays clear.

Oh my gosh!! What fish do you have?! They're beautiful! Especially the white one with long fins..

Oh missed that. There are cherry barbs, the fluffy white coloured ones are long finned leopard danios, a female betta and one oto cat.

Nice video, and wonderful tank setup! :) I'm getting some more fish soon, and was wondering how big of a tank Ill need. Currently planning on a female betta, 2 or 3 black mystery snails, and a little school of fish. Any thoughts on size wise as I see you have some pretty tanks set up :D or what would be a good tank mate towards a betta. (I will be having the betta, introducing the snails, and see how the betta does first of course)

+Elizabeth Beveridge Good tanks mates for a ten to twenty gallon are cherry barbs (only cherry barbs - not any other kind), white or gold cloud mountain minnows, guppies (if your betta is chilled), oto cats (they're sensitive for the first few weeks but after that they're solid little fish if you have the right set up), snails (although I have one betta who's a jerk and ate all his small snail tank mates), dwarf neon rainbow fish, cory cats (I would suggest more then one because they like company), pencil fish, raspboras, African dwarf frog (completely aquatic), marble hatchet fish, and tetras shaped like neon or cardnal tetras. I would strongly recommend keeping the number 8 fish or below and if you want to go as many as that I highly recommend doubling the filtration on your tank. Live plants also keep the water crystal clear, keep things like ammonia, nitrite and nitrate at 0 and give excellent coverage. If you go for the 20g tank you could also get a small pleco species like the leopard frog pleco, gold spot pleco, clown pleco, snow ball pleco or rubber nosed pleco. I would be cautious with danios. I had a female betta in my tank and she dealt well with the danios. I would be cautious with danios and a male betta in any small tank because of the fins. I would also be cautious with tetras shaped like black or phantom tetras. Both these guys get grumpy and can be fin nippers. They're kinda jerks. lol The biggest thing will be the personality and aggression levels of your betta. I have three right now and they all have different temperaments. One tries to kill anything in his tank and indeed ate all his snail tank mates, the second might flare a little and then is chilled unless there's something in there that runs away and then the chase is on. The third won't even flare at a mirror. I do recommend a back up plan unless you know the temperament of the betta in question. Fish I would avoid at all costs with bettas are cichlids (even dwarf cichlids take an experienced hand and very special circumstances so I don't suggest it). any barb other then cherry barbs, gold fish, gouramis, and Chinese algae eaters. Feel free to ask any more questions about the tank, live plants (low tech style), filtration or anything else tank related. :)

One thing I forgot to mention is mystery snails get bigger then bladder or trumpet snails so in a 10g I would only recommend one snail and supplemented with pieces of fresh veggie and wafers. Also a cuttle bone will help it get enough calcium to keep it's shell nice and hard and hole free.

Elizabeth Beveridge don't do a female betta do a male half moon ill give you some great choices for fish with a betta amano shrimp gold neon tetras Molly's I have 3 neon tetras 3 of them died well I have them with my dumbo betta in a 7 gallon I also have amano shrimp with him if say 4 amano shrimp 1 dalmation Molly 6 pygmy corydoras 3 zebra nerite snails those fish would do great in a 20 gallon tank

Cant you use your vac in reverse to refill with clean water?

I have a 5 gallon tank with a male betta. Must I take him out to do a change and clean? I was told netting the fish can be harmful and he's way too fast for me to get him into his cup (I bought him in this cup). Can I do the clean and change with him in it?

I clean my 5g tank the same way as this one. I don't take the fish out unless there's a need to tear the tank apart, one is sick, or I'm moving them to a different tank. Nets can potentially harm their fins since they're fragile. Something I've found with more outgoing bettas is they don't mind cups and will swim in them. It makes the fish easy to move.

Hi, I'm planning to start my very first planted tank and wanted to ask you what substrates you used? I prefer the look of simple store-bought sand, but different places are telling me different things that I need like fertilizers, a layer of soil, etc.

I used Tahitian Moon Sand by CaribSea. It's heavier than other sand like pool or filter sand which can clog filters. The big thing with sand is it packs denser than gravel so it needs stirred 4 to 6 times a year or so to get some circulation in there. The Mayalasian Trumpet snail can help with this because they burrow into the substrate and also help keep the tank super clean and eat a few different kinds of gravel and excess food. Since I made this video my tanks have all been changed and now I use fluorite for the bottom (it's made for plants). While I loved the look of sand, the one thing I found is it showed all the debris since it had no rocks to hide in. I don't use fertilisers in my tanks or anything special. I rinsed the sand and dumped it in, planted the plants and filled with water. I bought low light, easy care plants like Java fern (needs to be tied to a rock, piece of driftwood, or pot etc), anubias nana (any variety - these ones can grow in a bucket, and are planted the same way as java fern), amazon sword, rotala indica or rotala rotundifolia, crypt wendtii, (bronze or green), java moss (loves some people's tanks and won't grow in others, also grows like crazy Sideshow Bob hair and if it likes your tank will take over if not trimmed regularly!), crypt spiralis, crypt balansae, and there are a couple other ones that I can't remember off the top of my head. They run on fish poop for and the nitrogen cycle that naturally occurs in your tank - some use the ammonia your fish and waste produce, some use the nitrites, and they all use nitrates. They will grow faster if you have brighter lights and slower if the lights are dimmer. Some people have had luck with ozelot swords and a couple other varieties of sword and bocapa. Stay away from live water plants that have bright red / orange/ purplish colours as they need a CO2 system and special set up. The ones I listed several people I know have in their tanks and they all generally grow well.

***** The ones I listed are fine going in first. If you're going to add a betta, it can be put in the tank at the same time. If you have other fish or a larger number I highly recommend cycling the tank first. Even with the plants, your ammonia and nitrites will go to at least 0.5 or a little more every day for the first four weeks or so. I planted and then stocked this tank right away and I did daily water changes for the first three or four weeks and every two days for another couple weeks. The plants should love the florescent lamp as long as it's close enough to light the tank up.

I have a 5 gallon fish tank... but it is very cloudy and my betta keeps going up to the tank, gets air and goes back down... is this because of the oxygen lack? And can i buy moss balls to prevent this?

My first thought is filtration will help. The second is if it's cloudy it's either a new set up or needs cleaned more. If your betta is going to the surface and back down then he's lethargic. So my thought turns to things like ammonia build up (without knowing more). Live plants will help like the marimo balls but they don't' take the place of cleaning the tank.xzde

+FloresXIII With that many fish in a 10g it was about once a week - sometimes a little longer if life happened. Now the tank has radically changed (like all my tank) and there are more plants and only two fish so I clean every 2 or so weeks.

Cool. The thing to keep in mind with tetras like the glo fish is they can be grumpy and nip each other and possibly fight in a small tank like a ten gallon. They also get two to three inches long. It's the same with the danio glo fish. I've had experience with both tetras and danios. They're best kept in a group of 5 or more but it can be difficult to keep 5 in a ten gallon. Not impossible, but not the best. (Yes the danios were bullies and jerks in that tank but I didn't have a bigger tank...) If you want to do it you could try 4 or maybe 5 and heavily planted - I mean like 35 - 50 percent cover so they can get away from each other and the 35 gallons of filter power is a good idea. The sponge I have in that ten gallon does up to 35 gallons of filtration. Doubling the recommended filtration at a minimum, in my opinion, is always a good idea. If you want to talk plants or any other ideas feel free to post back.

Are they female bettas or male bettas? If theyr'e female bettas then They can go in a 10 gallon tank with lots of cover and hiding places but it's better if it's a 20 gallon tank because female bettas can be territorial. If heyr'e male bettas then they can't go together in a tank like mine.

What can I use if I don’t have a siphon? Isn’t there something alternative ? I will get a siphon soon, but I just want something to clean my fishes tank right now. Thanks :)

Did you cycle your tank before setting it up? If not, look up cycling a tank and the nitrogen cycle. You can't just add fish to an aquarium without cycling it first

It's a standard 10 gallon tank. It's measurements are 20 inches (50c) long by 10 inches (25cm) wide and 10 inches (25cm) high.

Did your lights from your hood grow any plants?

The light grew the plants in the tank but I didn't have any plants growing from the light. The long plants (the rotala) that grew across the surface are from the bottom and needed trimming because they got tall.

I know this doesn’t have to do much with the video but I recently got 5 ghost shrimp to add to my 15 gallon aquarium ( i have a cory catfish and a betta in there as well) and all the shrimp died within maybe three weeks. I️m trying figure out what happen and what i can do to prevent them from dying :(

Okay. I love shrimp. I have some cherry shrimp and amanos. So ghost shrimp are awesome but can be a little aggressive and nip at fins. Bettas also like shrimp so your betta may be goign after them. The key with shrimp is clean water and they're scavengers. So they need food they can get to just like all the other critters. Also live plants like marimo moss balls and anubias really help to keep the water clean, give the shrimp something to hide in and pick at.

They are. I use one of those yellow and green ones on occasion. The green side that's rougher is great for removing gunk off the glass. I find them at places like the dollar store for a good price.

Love those white Dino's . I live in Florida would love to own a pair. So far no luck at my pet stores.

so it IS okay to clean the tank with the fish still in there? I have to clean my 10 gallon with danios and a khuli loach. I don't know how I'm going to not hurt them :/ but it REALLY needs to be cleaned ): haaalpppp meeeeh 🤓 love your video by the Way! very informative (:

the fish will usually avoid the siphon, if they dont its not hard to avoid the fish. also most siphons have a little net so the fish cant get sucked up the tube. (:

Danio you can buy them in multiple colors and usually find at any pet store very small

Yes, they're danios. These ones are long finned leopard danios. As Badraven said, they come in different colours and types.

+Jay When this video was made there was a female betta, pair of danios, one oto cat, and some cherry barbs. I remember I had 8 fish in there.

+sunny Douglas Pretty much. The one thing I would suggest is a small siphon hose and really watch because the baby guppies could get sucked up easily. However if they do, they're small enough that you should be able to get them out of the bucket. The other thing you can do is use a turkey baster to suck up dirt and fish poop from the spots it collects (if you want to be extra careful) and scoop the water out instead of suctioning it up.

The only chemical I use is tap water conditioner to dechlorinate the water.

+Lori Oliver I got the smallest one that a chain store Called Big Al's Aquarium Services and That is both in the USA or Canada. Although you can pretty much pick up at any Petsmart (and they have some nice ones with a little pump attached to the end), Petco etc. Depending on the tank size you can get bigger or smaller ones.

+Amanda Serrano I swear it's the live plants. They seem to do as much for water quality as the filter does. I think the other thing that may help is the sponge filter. Since the water doesn't flow heavily things don't get stirred up as much. Sometimes it can depend on how old your tank is. If it's a new tank (under two or three months) it could get foggy because it's doing something called cycling which sets up the biological bacteria. The last thing I can think of is when you clean the tank if you hard core clean the filter, gravel etc. that can also cause it to fog because the biological bacteria blooms in the water.

I thought you were supposed to unplug everything before you do a water change. I've been doing a lot of research and they say to unplug all electrical equipment

There are a few that I love. Bettas of course, dojo loaches, cory cats, and fresh water shrimp to name a few. :)

+William Cottrill Do you mean can you take the fish out of the tank when you clean it? I find that the only time I ever need to take the fish out is if I'm doing something major in the tank like changing the gravel or there's an emergency and I take the tank apart. Other then that you shouldn't need to take the fish out of the tank.

yaoming yen The basic LED lights that came with the tank. When I got the plants I made sure to get low light easy care ones such as Rotala indica, anubias, java moss and crypts.

+Amit Kumar Yes if you mess with it too often but if you never mess with sand and don't have burrowing creatures like Malaysian trumpet snails gas pockets can build up and leach into the water column because it compacts a lot more then gravel. So every two to three months you want to give it a stir.

So, you suck the nasty stuff up with the siphon then leave the siphon to remove the water? Sorry Ive always been confused in videos!

Fake plants are fine. IT's my preference to keep live water plants for the benefits and natural look they have.
