Cleaning My Spinning Wheel for the First Time! How I Prep my Schacht Ladybug for Tour de Fleece

HOW TO CLEAN A SPINNING WHEEL
Tour de Fleece is coming at the end of the month (really just a week away!) and I’m giving my Schacht Ladybug spinning wheel a much needed bath! Join me as I clean my wheel for the first time ever and give her a good oil too. I haven’t spun on her in two years (thanks to a difficult physical recovery after having Benji last year) so she’s covered in dust, cobwebs, cat hair and who knows what else. I’m getting her into perfect working order so she’s ready for 3 weeks of spinning (and hopefully more after that).
Tour de Fleece is an annual event started in 2006 by Star Athena on her blog. Eventually the event was moved to Ravelry and there are several groups on Facebook dedicated to the event as well. The goal of the event is to challenge yourself to spin each day of the Tour de France. Many people set goals of spinning for a certain amount of time each day, working through a project, or just trying to do as much as possible.

I didn’t realize that our ladybugs had a dates and info. We got ours probably moments apart. Mine is 2759 date May 16 2012. Funny!

I'm so glad it helped! I had to come back to this video this past summer as a reminder how to clean it again (though not as thoroughly this time). I really love my Ladybug and I hope you enjoy yours too!

@Little Mitch Stitches I have been learning on a drop spindle for the last 3 months, and a wheel is so different. I am getting the hang of it, though! My Ladybug's birth date is 11/10/22, and the count is well over 4,000. I thought I took a picture of the info, but I guess I didn't. I'm not home at the moment. Have a great day!

@@Buttonsginger Yes it's different, but you're going to be so much faster now (once you get hang of it haha). Where is your ladybug on your wheel? That's my favorite part of this wheel :). Sadly mine has sat unused since Tour de Fleece this past summer.

It's on the left leg , towards the bottom of the wheel.

I’ve been thinking about doing mine.. read about all the steps but never sure how much it would darken. Thanks for showing the actual process!

You're welcome! I'm so glad it's helpful for someone! It was always a mystery to me too haha. As for the darkening, I'd probably ask someone knowledgeable about wood what would be best. It likely depends on the type of wood your wheel is made of and the tint in the oil. My husband noticed that my wheel looked darker but it's also changed color over time naturally.

Hi Have you noticed the Colour of the Wheel (meaning the Red not the Wood) has faded since you bought ? It seems brighter in the Ads. Ive just bought a used Ladybug so your Video was really useful. Thank you.

It might have a bit, but I don't think mine quite matched the brightness of the red in the pictures even when I got it. I think over time, the materials used have changed depending on price, what's available and probably any feedback on quality Schacht has received. I think hwwles older than mine (2012) has a brighter red wheel but it was a different material. They looked like a more acrylic type of plastic (shiny but almost brittle) where mine feels and looks more like a recycled plastic (like park benches and playground equipment). I don't know what they look like these days or the current advertisement photos. I was a little disappointed in the color when I first received mine, but now I like that it's not so vivid. I also didn't love the ladybug piece on mine becaise it was different from the one on my friend's wheel, but I do like that it's bigger than the previous versions. I dont know what the market is like now, but I could not find a Ladybug used when I was trying to buy one. You're very lucky! And that was when the price was much lower too. I'm so glad you found it useful! I had to refer back to this video this past summer to give myself a refresher on what I should be wiping down 🤣. Subscribe and come back in the summer for Tour de Fleece! It's pretty much the only time I really get spinning.

@@LittleMitchStitches Hi Thank you for your reply. I'm in the UK (Wales) and I've just bought the Ladybug on eBay. You're right they don't come up for sale often here either. It was listed as 7 year old but it is actually nearly 11 years old!! And despite showing 3 Bobbins on the photo the Seller only sent 1. I was very disappointed but the Wheel is lovely to Spin on though but needs a good clean. I was wondering if I could use T Cut which is a polisher usually used on Car paintwork on the Wheel but haven't bought any yet. Anyway Thanks again.

@@rhonaharrington3850 Ugh that's pretty shady! I hope you were able to send feedback to eBay about that seller. I have 5 bobbin for mine- 3 to spin on, 1 to ply, and 1 for when I get distracted by other projects haha
