A lot of people have been commenting that I shouldnt remove all of the bedding. I just want to make it clear that I did remove all of the bedding to clean the bottom, but I did put back some of the old bedding to make the cage smell familiar.

Willow the hamster I used to have it on a short table, but I noticed it was bending so I had to set it on the floor. I now use two flat shelves underneath. A one meter long desk is definetly too short.

I'd have to agree with you. So far the only two channels I've seen that take complete proper care of their hamsters is Victoria Rachel and this channel. Their are many people using the retold but a lot of times the bedding isn't deep enough, multiple hamsters are kept in one cage, the wheels to small, and whatever else people can come up with.

I’ve seen so manny KZreadrs keeping their hamsters in critter trails and thinking it’s okay or not cleaning it right or just treating their hamster like they are a toy for kids or something !! they are so much more than that! Amazing!! I ordered some glass acrylic trays ( glass or acrylic haha ) off either amazon Walmart or IKEA... Dont remember. The are just square glass trays pretty much- I think about 13x 8, designed to hold standard paper. Make amazing sand baths!!

Hey, as long as it is 450 sq inches it'll work for now! If it isn't bin cages are a cheap alternative and of course so is the detolf costing a little more. As long as your hamster is housed in a minimum of 450 it should be fine FOR THE TIME BEING. I'd upgrade it to at least 700 sq inches.

I used to have 4 ikea detolfs, one died last Tuesday night :( and I'm rehoming one of my hamsters today or tomorrow (due to him being unhappy and I can't upgrade him any more) so will only have 2. Really lovely enclosure, I love how they look. Only difference is I use a water bowl and scatter feed

The only thing I would say is don't use water and viniger to clean a hamsters cage I use the clean and safe one because of they can smell realy good and viniger is realy strong for there nose and could damage there ability to smell

I haven't really found a bedding that doesn't stick. wood pellets will not stick, but its not very good for them to dig in.

What kinda bedding are you using??🐹

This makes me feel like my cage sucks, but I am saving up for an IKEA detolf so he will have a better cage soon x

we are looking into getting a hamster for our children and really like the idea of this idea of using the detolf! Just out of interest though how often do you need to change the bedding ? And sorry if its a silly question but can you have two in the same size setup as this? Thanks!

Paul Shepperd Its not silly at all. Asking questions before getting a hamster is actually really important. I usually dont take out all of the bedding when im cleaning because it keeps the hamsters smell in the cage, and will make it less scared and stressed out. I usually only clean it once a month but sometimes I clean it after one and a half month. I only clean it when the cage starts to smell really bad or looks dirty. When cleaning the cage I remove half of the old bedding and puts in the new bedding. Then I mix it all together, but there is a lot of videos on how to do it. Syrian hamsters (the big species of hamsters) can not live together. They will fight and kill each other. Some dwarf hamsters can live together without fighting but I dont recommend it, but it you still want to try, the detolf it perfect for two dwarfs. If they starts to fight, just divide the detolf in half (if you search how to devide a detolf hamster cage, you can find lots of tutorials). Sorry if my english is bad😂

If your hamster is really small and you only have short toys I think you will be fine, but the best thing would be to make a lid.

yes I do in that little glass jar thing. it is just covered in substrate, but I sifted it after det video.

Jae not with the glass, but with the plastic that is holding the glass together. Sand and bedding has gotten stuck between the two panels of glass. The problem could be f Solved by using fish tank silicon to seal the gap. This is not a major problem and you can still use the cage if it happens.

I'm considering getting a Detolf, my hamster is in a 700+ sq inch cage but never seems content. I worry that he'll start chewing the bars in the detolf, has anyone else had a very chewy ham? Mine relentlessly chews at the acrylic and wood on his cage to no end despite being out multiple times a day 😣

8BitCarni Sniff once started to chew the bars in the detolf cuz i didnt let him out for playtime when he wanted to. Maybe your hamster needs a bigger playpen or is bored and needs its toys changed out.

you shouldn't change all of it at once. Once a month you can take all of the bedding out and add new, but make sure you add 1/4 of the old bedding back into the cage to make it smell familiar.

Save up your allowance money. The ikea item is not too expensive. Then you can ask again if it would be ok to buy it and tell your mom you saved up for it. She might say yes this time. If you are not receiving allowance money at this time. Then offer to do some chore your mom hates for a month. Hope that works

You can try to tell her that she need to listen to you and you can explain that hamsters need a big cage cuz if not they can get health problems, and its important for you that your hamster has a good life. You can also earn your own money or save up for a detolf. Tell her that you can buy a detolf for your own money and maybe she will say yes.
