Cleaning my Disgusting CDJs from Burning Man

Ғылым және технология

I'm back! And this time I'm tearing apart a CDJ2000nexus that was used for a whole week at Burning Man.
The playa dust found at Black Rock City damages electronics due to its highly alkaline nature. To properly clean any piece of gear that has come back from the playa, a full disassembly and mild acid solution bath for every major component is necessary. This is my process for cleaning my CDJs.
Do not bring (or send anything to) the playa without being financially and emotionally prepared to completely destroy it.

My 5cents as an electronics technician/electronics designer: * When reattaching self tapping screws to plastic, always rotate the screw slowly anti clockwise until you feel that screw to drop back to its original threads and then, with veeery little force try to turn it clock wise and see if it'll seat back to it's original thread (it should), if you dont' do this, you can mess up the threads by creating new ones. * When cleaning electronics, you want to avoid nylon brushes and microfibre cloths, they easily create static electricity and that can zap the components and break them or cause intermittent faults that can be hard to fix or trace down. Use normal kitchen towel paper and ESD safe brushes that one can find from ebay with few dollars. * Be very, VERY careful with the laser and the laser head mechanics and the motor. The laser head ways need to be lubricated after cleaning with proper lube (type of which I can't remember from the top of my head, but it's not very lean, it's more like thin grease than liquid meant for plastics). the laser lens itself should never see any alcohol or other solvents unless you're sure there are no plastic parts within that mechanism (which there usually is). Isopropyl alcohol attacks some plastics quite aggressively. Motor assembly shouldn't see any alcohol or other solvents (no, not even water) since the mechanism will lose the lubrication and it'll break prematurely and it's horribly difficult to lubricate... can be done but it's not easiest thing to take apart :D * Be careful with any remaining solvents on the boards, they can start to ingress moisture over time or attack plastics and rubber components. Thus isopropyl alcohol is recommended since it'll evaporate very quickly and thoroughly.

Used to clean units that were smoke and fire damaged. A commercial dishwasher does wonders on most of the parts for the pre wash step. Do not use the dry cycle as the heat can damage plastic. Air dry with the alcohol only on the PCB's. Some silkscreen is damaged by the solvent. Odor permeates plastic so this does not apply to the dust, but Smoke X removes smoke odor.

I have been building custom guitars since the 1980s. When we began using CNC machines, the wood dust was just killing em.... What worked great was to run a low pressure (25 - 35psi) regulated filtered through desiccant air line from the shops air compressor .. basically it was like a little clear hose like paramedics use with a oxygen mask.. Dust simply can NOT enter due to being slightly pressurized, or more like, dust cant swim up stream... I'm sure you would have to drill a small hole to feed the air... Same goes for your rack... You can run K&N off road filters in front of the rack fans, but also push compressed air into each rack unit ... The dust in the wood mill might not be micro rocks, but it's like peas & carrots with static, LOL!... And honestly, I don't know how anyone can even think of being at that place without a compressor to blow your face , your hair, hat & clothes, 8 track tapes, etc. Oh, and you can charge money to put the hose in your shoes , omg it feels good, LOL!.. Hope this

I really love these CDJ repair videos of yours! I would really love to one day acquire a CDJ setup but buying it is way too expensive. I’m relatively handy with electronics though and buying broken ones and repairing them seems like a great option!

I did that with some “for parts” units on eBay. Really easy to fix usually

Sounds great! Got any good resources for CDJ/DJM repair? Any good sites/forums/youtube channels? aside from this one of course :)

Honestly I’d say just look into general electronics repair. Louis rossmann on KZread is where I learned to solder and troubleshoot electronics.

Didn’t know about the water/vinegar and alcohol trick. Will be useful for other electronics

Hey, Can you please tell me what Peli Cases are you using for the 2000 nexus? I simply hate the normal flightcases (plus they are not waterproof). I just need the model to see if I can source it where I am. thanks a bunch
